    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Dr. Leonidas Holt wrote and delivered the eulogy below to honor his father, James Thomas Holt, at his funeral:
    As I write this for Dad, I write it for every dad, for "Dad" and "Mom" are two of the dearest words in our language. I want to relate a little perspective on the life of the man we memorialize today. He was born January 14, 1899, to humble parents, Calvin Lea Holt and Lucy (Dodson) Holt, in Caswell County. He was their fourth child. This was during the administration of William McKinley. Childhood diseases, diphtheria, whooping cough, scarlet fever, typhoid fever, and smallpox meant that reaching adulthood was questionable at best. No man had ever flown and the automobile was a rare motorized buggy. No public school system existed.
    As time went along, more children were born to this couple. Calvin Lea struggled to exact a living from the soil in a county still economically devastated by the Civil War. The children joined the struggle at an early age. Though economically poor, the family was rich in love, camaraderie and religious faith. They knew how to work and how to have fun. They played various musical instruments (Dad was banjo and mandolin). These jam sessions were often joined into by neighboring families. The Wright brothers flew a powered airplane. Automobiles became more frequent.
    Along in this time an event happened that so profoundly affected Dad's life that he could never talk about it. His mother, Lucy Dodson Holt, died following childbirth. "Papa Lea," as Granddaddy Holt was know, kept the family together. Aunt Mable, the oldest daughter, became the "Mom."
    Dad spent a lot of time with his paternal grandparents, Henry and Sallie Powell Holt. Henry was a veteran of the Civil War. Their stories of this period of time doubtless started Dad's interest in history. 1914 found the family in another economic crisis. A severe drought devastated crops. So the three oldest boys, Mason, Greg, and Dad, went to work at a sawmill to help support the family. For several years, off and on, Dad worked in various sawmill camps. Here his education really began. Once he told us about becoming camp cook. "What did you cook?" Linda asked. "Beans and fatback!" Dad answered. "We got beans in 100 pound bags. When one ran out, we got some other kind of beans for variety."
    His sawmill experiences led Dad to decide he wanted something other than a sawmill career. He moved to Milton to enter Milton Academy, the only high school in Caswell County. Completing this, he went on to Trinity Park Preparatory School in Durham. Completing thhis, he entered Trinity College. All during this time, he did various jobs to help pay for school. With family encouragement, especially from eldest brother Mason, he graduated in the second class of Duke University in 1926. While at Duke, he lettered in both track and wrestling. I asked Dad how in the world he ever got into wrestling. He said the track season was about over and one of the coaches also coached wrestling and invited him to watch a practice. Dad did watch, decided he was as tough as any of them, and joined the team. During his career he was pinned only once and that was at the U.S. Naval Academy in the third overtime.
    In 1926, following college, he applied to the school board of Nathanael Greene School for a high school teaching position. He was hired. He and Mr. R. W. Utley (then school principal) boarded across the road from the school in the home of Aunt Blanch Bowman. While teaching here, his eyes fell on a young lady, Dortha Elizabeth Causey, whom he married in this church in 1932. She was his spouse for 57 years until her death in 1989. Dad's teaching career spanned 38 years until his retirement in 1964. The stories of pranks and jokes are endless. I know that he loved all his students and truly wished them well in life. One of his greatest joys was seeing them succeed.
    After retirement he worked on the farm. He enjoyed his cows, tended his garden, and loved to share his produce with neighbors and friends.
    The things that Dad gave us to carry on in our lives was a quiet demeanor, a sense of total honesty and fairness, and most of all a total devotion to our Christian faith. These were the solid rocks that were the foundation of his life. He loved life and his fellowman. He never wavered from knowing who he was and he never would compromise his principles for personal gain. He believed a man's word was his bond.
    So please bear with us as we shed our tears. Time stooped his body, dimmed his sight, dminished his hearing. But nothing could ever diminish his spirit or squash his optimism. These memories will be with us forever.
    Dad, you will always be my hero!
    Hello again, I appreciate your entering my data. Did I meet you at a reunion this spring, I go whenever I can. It was close to Altavista. My Great Aunt, Bettyann Petty usually calls me. Here is what I have on Barton Thomas.
    Most of this comes from an article in The Charlotte Gazette, Drakes Branch, Va. dated 9 sep 2010.
    He had 3 siblings, John S. born 13 jun 1839, William Harrison born 25 aug 1840, and Henry C. born 22 mar 1846. Barton and John joined the Confederate Army on the same day, 29 jun 1861, at Rorrers Va. (Mt. Rogers). Barton was assigned as a private to company E. 57th regiment, Virginia Infantry.He was wounded on 29 aug 1863 at Manassas. On 13 may 1864 he was admitted to the Wayside General Hospital #9 at Richmond. He was to return to duty on 4 jun 1864 but instead he was sent to Chimborazo Hospital #5 and on 19 jun 1864 he was srent home for 60 days with a fractured right forearm. On 10 sep 1864 he was listed as being wounded again and on 25 sep. he was again sent to Chimborazo Hospital #5. His regiment was listed as being at Farmville Va. on 8 apr 1865 and he was mustered out on 9 apr 1865. It is doubtfull that they made it to Appomattox so they were probably some where between when they were mustered out.
    As far as I can tell he and Cordelia had 11 children. They were married on 29 sep 1863 in Pittsylvania Co.
He is buried in a family cemetery along with his wife Mary (who died in 1910), his son James (who died in 1886 at the age of about 24) and a Georganna Powell Winstead (12-14-1900 to 7-15-1930) who I am not familar with. The cemetery is presumably at or near the site in the Cunningham community in Person County where he lived after the Civil War until his death in 1930 ( as shown on the 1870 thru 1920 censuses).
    3195 Jarrold Powell
    Name also seen as Jarrett.
    It is possible that this Jarrold Powell is the brother of the father of his wife, Elizabeth Powell. This has not been confirmed. See The Heritage of Caswell County, North Carolina, Jeannine D. Whitlow, Editor (1985) at 139-140 (Article #100 "Family of Jefferson Davis Butler" by Louise Powell Butler). If so, Jarrold Powell would have married his niece.
    One source gives his death date as 28 June 1831. See: Ancestors and Allied Families of Daniel G. and Judith E. McCormick Bowling. This seems incorrect given that his will apparently was written in 1832 and not proved until 1838.
    Abstract: "William J. Powell of the County of Caswell and State of North Carolina of the one part and Mastin Powell of the County of Halifax and State of Virginia "; $50 for "a certain piece of parcel of land lying in the county of Caswell State of North Carolina on the waters of little creek adjoining the lands of him the said Mastin Powell, Elizabeth Powell and others containing by survey twenty six acres "
    William J. Powell
    Witness: Carter Powell, Edwin M. Powell
    Proved by the oath of Carter Powell and ordered recorded 20 March 1843 [Note: The only lot containing 26 acres in the division is lot #6 thatwent William Powell. The above deed adds the middle initial "J." to the name "William Powell" in the division of lands in the deed in FF 57-58. This allows us to tie the "Jackson Powell" in the will to the "William Powell" in the division in FF 57-58, and to the "William J. Powell" in this deed.
    This gives us a full name "William Jackson Powell" and by implication this is also the full name of the William J. Powell who is the son of Mastin Powell and who is refered to as "William J. Powell Sr." in Halifax VA deeds (such as Halifax County Virginia Deeds, Book 56, page 61) with "William J.Powell Jr." who is the William J. Powell in this deed.]
    Love to have new information about my Powells of Caswell. I think Jerald Powell who married the daughter of Mastin Powell is the son of my James McDonald Powell and not HER uncle as many state. I think that is a ridiculous assertion! James M. Powell's daughter married a Fitzgerald and both parents died. James raised the 3 Fitzgerald children. I think he named a son Fitzgerald and the fitz was dropped. Jerald Powell was born about the time the Fitzgerald's died. They had a mill in
