Yanceyville - James Ernest Foster, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, in Fort Mill, S.C., at his son's home, surrounded by family. James was born in Caswell County on Aug. 30, 1920, the son of Ernest O. Foster and Isabella Poteat Foster. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Katherine Zimmermam Foster and his brother Richard Foster. He is survived by his two children, James B. Foster of Fort Mill, S.C., and Donna Kay Clark of Yanceyville; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He also is survived by three sisters, Doris Foster Norwood of Burlington, Lilly Ann Vernon of Greensboro and Betsy Webster of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Lindsey Foster of Sutherlin, Va., and Duke Foster of Yanceyville.
James was a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Yanceyville, which he loved dearly. In recent years, he also spent many hours of fellowship and laughter with friends at Yanceyville Drug Co. and the Senior Center. Known as "Slick" to his family and friends, James always put love of God and family at the center of his life. James grew up in Caswell County, the oldest of seven children, farming and helping run the family's dairy business. He served proudly in World War ll with the Army Air Corps in the Southwest Pacific. As part of the 345th Bomb Group, he flew 50 combat missions from Port Moresby, New Guinea, to Biak Island and Rabaul. The military awarded him the Air Medal with two clusters. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0089 and a member of VFW Post 7316 in Yanceyville. He also was a member of the 5th Air Force Memorial Foundation and a charter member of the World War ll Memorial Foundation. After returning from the war, James became a banker, and retired as President and CEO of the Washington Production Credit Association in Washington, N.C. In addition to living in Washington, he and his family lived in Dillon, S.C, Elon and Burlington. Wherever he lived, James always became a part of a church community and was active in Rotary and Lions Clubs.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Yanceyville. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the Military Graveside Rites. American Legion Post Number 0089 and VFW Post number 7316 will offer the graveside rites. The family wishes to thank the amazing care givers of Hospice of York County, S.C., and Care Haven for their care and support. Harrelson Funeral Service is assisting the Foster family with arrangements.
