In Reply to: Re: Tuck's of Halifax Co Va by Clifford Tuck of 1563
James Winfree m. Elizabeth Jones, daughter of Ambrose Jones and Catherine Collins, daughter of James Collins.
Their son, David Nicholas Winfree m. Achsah Tuck, daughter of John Tuck and Mary Powell.
Their daughter Nancy Winfree m. Edward Tuck, son of John Tuck and Mary Powell.
Acksah Tuck and Edward Tuck are brothers and sisters, and David Winfree and Nancy Winfree were brothers and sisters.
I have a lot of this information in the book I published August 1, 2000, in which I own the original record book and bible records their birth, marriage and death deaths are recorded therein, including the hour of death for most of them, and in a few cases where they married.
In essence, Edward Tuck and Nancy Winfree's children are members of both the James Winfree family who lived just across the state line in Granville County North Carolina from Virgilina, Virginia and the John Tuck and Mary Powell family who lived in Halifax County, Virginia. Edward and Nancy lived at Tuck's Cross Roads in Halifax County, Virginia right on the state line of NC and Virginia, in Virgilina, Virginia and their house is still standing. One of their descendants was Governor of Virginia. There is lots of information on that family and the Tuck's have an annual reunion there every year. Some of them are still living there.
I have John Tuck's daughter Achsah Tuck's line in my book, titled "Genealogical Records by Lela B. Winfree" published August 1, 2000. You can look it up in the Mormon Church Branches as they purchased a copy of my book in early 2001, and I gave them permission to microfilm my book and signed another document giving them permission to put filmed copies of my book in all of their branches in 2001, barely a year after publiscation. I do have some errors in my book, but it is with an addenda in their branches, and of course, with this type of work, there is yet other mistakes here and there to be found which I add to the addenda as they are found, sometimes by myself or other members who did not and would not participate in the early stages of my work. In case you might be interested, my book is $25.00 postpaid within the U.S. only, 370 pages, back and forward indexing, and with some cross references to other families I have in my book in which some of their marriages took place.
Mrs. Winfree
Also:
Aletha Jane Macon published a book in 1964 on "John And Edward Tuck Of Halifax County Virginia And Some Of Their Descendants". Her book is in the Libraries also. She was killed by a hit and run driver several years ago. We posted a correction to Page 17 of her book which she mailed to us, on the Tuck GenForum Home Page several years ago. It is under the name of Clarence Winfree or Lela Winfree. She did not have the birth dates of John Tuck's children when she did her book.
We mailed a photo copy of the record book which was probably owned by James Winfree of Granville County, North Carolina and his eldest son, David Nicholas Winfree carried to Smith County, Tn in November 1822 after she published her book, a copy of which we purchased directly from her in 1964. In her book, she has Achsah Tuck listed as not married. She did marry too, and their marriage date, husband and names, birth dates and marriages of her children and descnedants are recorded in both a Record Book we own, leather covered, hand made and hand stitiched and linen pages. In addition, we also own the Bible in which belonged to her youngest son, Benjamin Franklin Winfree (B. F. Winfree) born in Halifax County, Virginia; lived and died in Cove Hollow, DeKalb County, Tennessee, migrating to Smith County, Tn in November 1822.
Some of the Tucks went from Smith County, Tn to Macon County, Tennessee and bought land there on Barren Creek from Benjamin Winfree, then several of the Tucks from Smith County, Tennessee and Macon County, Tennessee went into Kentucky, and Powell Tuck died in Butler County, Kentucky. They are descendants of John Tuck and Mary Powell. Edward Tuck of Virgilina, Virginia was a lawyer there and the Tuck's in Virginia have tons of information on him.
DAvid Nicholas Winfree lived in both Granville County, NC and Halifax County, Virginia and land records in Granville Co., NC, auction attendance with John Tuck in Halifax County, Virginia and David Nicholas Winfree and wife, Achsah Tuck's remains were removed by the Corps of Engineers to Mount Holly Cemetery in Smithville, DeKalb County, Tennessee to make way for the Center Hill Dam. The Corps of Engineers in Nashville, Tennessee maintains these records. | Powell, Mary D. (I13921)

Of the children of Thomas Carter (1683 - 1738) of Goochland who remain in Cumberland County, there are only two: Robert Carter (? - 1757) and John (1725 - 1773, who marries Mary Fleming). The other children go to Buckingham County and Georgia. This Robert Carter has been confused many time to be the Robert Carter who is the son of Giles Carter Jr. and grandson of Giles Carter of Henrico Co (1634 - 1701). His will is found in Cumberland County, probated in 1759; [written in 1753] however, the land mentioned in his will matches with land deeds signed by Robert Carter, son of Thomas Carter of Goochland.
"Carter's ferry became the site of Cartersville in Oct. 1790, when the Virginia General Assembly authorized trustees to lay out the town on 27 acres of land that John Woodson (d. 1793) owned at the south landing. Established in 1744, the ferry was originally designated to run between "the land of Ashford Hughes, on the north side of James river," and "the land of Robert Carter" (apparently the deceased Robert "King" Carter) on the opposite shore, but by 1763 the land on both banks, including the ferry, belonged to the Hughes family, the family into which John Woodson married (HENING, 5:250, 6:16, 13:155, 171; WMQ, 1st ser., 11 [1902--3], 52--53)."
[Again, there is the separate and legitimate confusion created by the presence of the nearby Clifton Estate which is proven to King Robert].

6. GenForum posting of Mary Jean Voight Childress [proven to be an excellent researcher, who has provided critical material on the early Carter back in Albemarle/Amherst]
"For your information - of those surnames above, HOBSON, HUGHES and VAUGHAN's (early VA) married in to various branches of CHILDRESS! My children descend from the HOBSONS and in fact descend from a branch of HOBSON - CHILDRESS, this family were part founders of Cartersville in Cumberland County, VA. The VAUGHANS are legion, they had at least (by last account) about 7 marriages with Childress, small world".

Dick,
Sorry to have not responded to your message! I logged off and then couldn't get back on! But their going to send me my password, yikes.
Anyway, back to your question? I have a book which was sent to me by the author. It is in relation to the Hobson Chapel in VA and it has many Carters listed.
My children are direct Hobson descendants, not through me, but paternally. Their ancestor, William Hobson had a sister or daughter who married a Carter. So this is in the book to. An authority on this Hobson Chapel is George Hobson. I haven't corresponded with him for awhile, but he, myself, Barbara Hookings and the listowner for Hatcher-List, Nel Hatcher worked on these lines for months! We took all the deeds, wills and info on Carter to and came to some conclusions. At that time, all of us were struggling with all the confused lines, these included Childress to. As a John Hobson, father of William Hobson among others, married Sarah Childress and John Hobson was connected to the ownership of mills and etc., with the Carters. Anyway, I'll get the book out and do a search through it for what you asked. In the meantime, I recommend you see George Hobsons messages on the Hobson forum, along with Barbara Hookings. I'll post the info you asked about it if locatable. Thanks!
[Tobaccoville VA is in southern Powatan County, directly east of Cumberland County; there is a Route 13 that travels East to West between the two counties, no sign of a Route 113. There are a few more fact relating to Thomas of Goochland Carter that seem important. They should be posted to the forum at some point. Some of the following repeats what I may have already sent but it allows for the references I make to other paragraphs.
1. In 1720 Thomas Carter purchased [Henrico COB 719-1724/242] 100a in Henrico County, Virginia on the north side of the James River at the east end of the Licking hole survey of John Woodson. Another 200a was deeded at the same time to Robert Carter , Charles Huddlesey and John Webb. These transactions are recorded in Henrico County COB 1719-1724 by the Feb Court of 1722. All of the participants in these transactions must have been born prior to 1700.
2. On 17 Aug 1725 at the cost of 35 shillings, a patent [VPB 12/301] was issued for 327a to Robert Carter in Henrico County on the south side of the James River adjacent to Robert Hughes including 1 mile of river front that encompasses the present day town of Cartersville. The Carter tract joined the Hughes track at a corner ash on the river that was described in the Hughes patent as being near Huddlecey's fence. Although this Robert Carter was involved in several other land transactions, he remained on this parcel until his death in 1759 when this parcel of land was devised to his son Charles.
3. On 2 Nov 1726 Thomas Carter signed a will that recited:
To eldest son Robert , 1 yearling cow
To 2nd son Thomas , 1 yearling cow
To son John , 1 shilling
To son Edward, 1 shilling
To daughter ElIzabeth Carter, 1 shlillng
To son Joseph, all land I live on, 100 acres, but if he dies without Issue, then to my son Edward.
Personal estate to wife Penele, and she to be executrix.
The will was signed with a full signature and was witnessed by: Thomas Edwards, William Pledge, Dorothy (0) Pledge.
4. On 18 Nov 1729 Robert Carter of St James Parish, Goochland Co, deeded [DB 1/144] to Susannah Hulsey, widow, of same Parish, for ?30 , 100 acres of land on north side of James River between land of Henry Atkinson and John Webb, with all houses, etc, being land where Charles Hulsey did formerly dwell. Mary wife of Carter relinquished her dower right [OB 1/177]. The deed was signed with a mark (R) and witnessed by: John Webb and Joseph Ashlin. In a deed recorded on the same day Susannah conveyed this land together with another 100a to son Charles Hulsey. She signed this deed with a mark.
5. On 28 Sep 1730 Thomas Carter, Junior received a patent [VPB 14/144] for 200a on Fleming Park Creek on Leonard Ballow's line. Thomas Carter, Jr. would have been born prior to 1710.
6. On 3 Dec 1733 at the cost of 20 shillings a patent [VPB 15/133] was issued to Thomas Carter for 400a in Goochland Co. lying on Deep Run of Muddy Creek on the south side of the river adjacent to John Bullington.
7. On 8 Oct 1734 Thomas Carter deeded [DB 2/20] to John Carter for ?16, 200a in Goochland County on Deep Run. {Weisiger has it the other way around in his abstracts as does some of the body of the recorded deed but it is clearly recorded as being signed by Thomas}. The deed is signed by Thomas Carter with a full signature and there is no dower release.
8. On 4 Jun 1735 Thomas Carter and his wife Susannah deeded [DB 2/109] to John Creasy for ?10.10.00, the lower 200a of the Deep Run tract. The deed was signed by Thomas with a full signature and by Susannah with a mark and was witnessed by Charles Raley, William Matlock and John Sand {Weisiger couldn't decide whether it was Sane or Lane but I believe it was Sand}.
9. On 4 Jun 1735 Thomas Carter deeded [DB 2/90] to his son Edward Carter that land in Goochland County where Thomas Carter lived. The deed identifies the land as that bought from Tarlton Woodson as executor of John Woodson, being part of the Licking hole survey but does not give an acreage. Later, see (13.) below, in Edward Carter's will, two parts of the land are described. One part between the river and Beaverdam Creek and one part north of the creek. These two pieces comprise the 100 acres of the deed in (1.) above. The deed was signed with a full signature and witnessed by Charles Raley, William Matlock and John Sand.
10. On 8 Sep 1736 at the cost of 40 shillings a patent [VPB 17/165] was issued to Thomas Carter for 400a in Goochland County, lying on both sides of Turkey Cock Creek south of the James River. Nothing in the patent tells us which Thomas Carter was the recepient.{We will see later that this was in fact Thomas Carter, Junior as in (5.) above. The patent does not use Junior thus ether Thomas Carter was dead by this date and his will was not recorded for two years , or, the patent was just wrong. There are no transactions involving this land until 1757 when Thomas Carter deeded 100a of the tract to John McGuire, husband of his daughter Rebecca (21.) The terms of the patent were such that the land must be seated within 3 years of the date of the patent or risk the forfeiture of the patent by the grantor. The question is who moved there to seat the property?}
11. On 20 Mar 1739/40 Robert Carter deeded [DB 3/195] to Stephen Hughes for ?60, 100a in Goochland Co., on the north side of the James River, bounded as follows: beginning on the river at the upper corner of the land of Thomas Carter, deceased thence up the river fifty poles thence north, north east one mile to the bark line thence on the bark line 50 poles (east omitted) thence to the place begun at the course being south, south west . The deed was signed with a mark (R) and Mary relinquished her dower right. An accompanying memorandum states that John Webb had Robert Carter's bond for the land mentioned in the deed and having lost the bond does by those present discharge and acquit the said Robert Carter from the said bond provided that the said Carter do acknowledge the deed to Stephen Hughes and his heirs. Mary his wife relinquished her dower right.
12. On 15 Mar 1744/5 at the cost of 40 shillings a patent [VPB 23/842] was issued to Robert Carter for 400a in Goochland Co. on the north side of the Willis River. This tract was bounded by Philip Mayo, Benjamin Harrison and James Skelton and was later conveyed to sons Robert, Jr. and Thomas, see (20.) below.
13. On 28 Dec 1748 Edward Carter signed a will with his mark and it was recorded [DB 5/534] on 18 Apr 1749 in Goochland County witnessed by: John Payne, John Hampton, and William Grymes. The will recited: To my daughter Judith Carter, part of land where I now live between the river and Beaverdam Creek. If my wife is with child, then to that child, the other part of land I live on northeast side of of Beaverdam Creek. If not, then all to my daughter Judith. If my child or children die without issue, then all to my brother Stephan Carter. All rest to my wife Mary for life and then to my children. Executor: my brother John Carter. When his estate inventory (?24..8..6) was recorded [DB 6/14] on 15 Aug 1749 it identified him as Edward Carter, Senior.
This last entry 13. allows us to accurately locate the Thomas of Goochland Carter 100 acre plantation. An examination of a map of Goochland County shows a very short stretch of land where Beaverdam Creek is parallel to and less than a mile from the river and thus provides for a description such as is found in this will.
Although these land transactions raise many questions I thought you should have the benefit of this data in developing the arguments for the Thomas of Goochland pages on your website.

There is some legitimate confusion - and some minor discrepancies in the collective data -
BUT we can not overlook a daughter Susannah and a son Baynes for Thomas JUNIOR.
No one, repeat no one, has yet noted and separated the THREE Thomas Carters of Goochland. Because of the lack of dates of birth, there was - and remains - much legitimate confusion over the Thomas Carters of Goochland. First of all, the Gen. Carter book on Josiah set all of us off on the wrong track when it came to the Thomas Carters; and then, the books on the Presidents added to the confusion with the several lines of Thomas Carters from Virginia down in the Carolinas and Georgia. Don't forget that Thomas of Mecklenburg is proven in Georgia and is the proven first cousin of Thomas Jr. of Goochland! We just don't know.
To wit: "About the time Josiah Carter transferred the Reedy Creek property to his brother Baynes, Josiah, along with a contingent of other Henry County, Virginia, families, migrated farther south to the state of Georgia".
To wit: ""Thomas Carter in Goochland married Mary Kilpatrick dau of Alexander Kilpatrick & Easley woman(you can find two sons birth date in Douglas Reg in Goochland. Mary's bro died in (I can remember right now) S.C. I think and in his WILL he Names Thomas Carter in Goochland & son Alexander Carter (Mary's Husband & son.)"
No, these are not Thomas Carters of Goochland - but don't cousins and inlaws count?
Dan Wallace is beginning to sort this out and from his material below, he appears to conclude:
Thomas Carter Sr. "of Goochland" m.1. Susannah Baynes, m.2. Penele Unknown (NOT Carrol)- died 1738
Thomas Carter Jr. "of Goochland" married (only) Mary Carrol - died 1763
Was it then Thomas III who married Mary Kilpatrick in 1751 - OR - a Thomas Carter of Barford, Lancaster County, Virginia? It would certainly NOT make sense for Thomas III to marry in Goochland (on the James River), and then have a son marry back up in Lancaster (on the Rappahannock).(The listings for a Thomas Carter III of Oglethorpe, Georgia are erroneous confusion for the son of Thomas of Mecklenburg).
On the other hand, wouldn't it make Common Sense (but by no means proof) for a proven marriage in 1751 with the birth of your first-born Thomas III in 1753? To date, we have no Thomas Carter of Lancaster County born circa 1753 unaccounted for. (Thomas Preston Carter of the Barford is well proven with a marriage to Susannah Gaines). Once again, we just don't know. Has Linda next, confused another pair of Thomas Carters?
Posted by: Linda Fluharty Date: August 24, 1998 In Reply to: Thomas Carter.. Lancaster Co., VA by Linda Fluharty This is plainly Thomas IV - who is still in Virginia for his marriage in 1771 (not to be confused for the marriage of his parents in 1751):
Have discovered Thomas in the DAR Patriot Index, b. 19 June 1753, d. 9 Feb 1825. Marriage Record in Early Virginia Marriages by Southern Book Co., 1953, lists marriage as 21 Nov 1771. A Family Bible of Thomas' son, John W. Carter, gives Thomas' parents as Thomas Carter and Mary Kilpatrick. Their marriage is in the Douglas Register, page 14, indicating that the marriage was recorded on pages 21-26 of the Parish Register of Goochland begun ANNO 1756 by William Douglas, Minister. (Fay Parrish Wade of the Carter Society of Virginia has a transcription of this bible).
Thomas Carter was born 19 June 1753 VA and he died 9 Feb 1825 VA. He married Elizabeth Doggett 21 Nov 1771. Looking for ancestors of both Thomas & Elizabeth. Thomas served in the Revolutionary War.
Yes, until Thomas IV, we have had exquisite details on the wills and deaths, but not a word on the births. Therefore, we MUST use Senior, Junior and Thomas III in all future discussions. Separately, Holly Carter has posted contra info that Thomas of Mecklenburg (of Robert) is her ancestor, and he is NOT Thomas instant who is proven in Georgia; and then, she is the only person to date to openly question which Thomas married Kilpatrick:
Holly Carter Dunlap of Georgia:
This Thomas Carter is not "my" Thomas Carter of Mecklenburg County, Virginia but a lot people have confused this Thomas Carter with "my" Thomas Carter so I'm posting this database of the Kilpatrick family and this Thomas Carter in the hopes it will bring some clarification.
I don't know if the Thomas Carter & Miss Kilpatrick (daughter of Alexander Kilpatrick) are the same couple as the Thomas Carter & Mary Killypatrick who married in Goochland County, Virginia in 1751 or not.
More research needs to be done here.
I expect they are two different couples as the Kilpatrick-Carter couple seem to have lived earlier than the Killypatrick-Carter couple.
End Holly
Finally, with the date of marriage of Thomas III to Mary Kilpatrick in 1751, we again need to move the dates of birth back for the children of Thomas II from the thirties to the late twenties (yet allow for the birth of Baynes in 1745)! These are still Best Guesses. The entry in the Douglas Register by itself does not prove which Thomas married Mary Kilpatrick; however, if we ADD Dan's work on the Mary Carroll marriage below, then we have a solid "body of circumstantial evidence".
The point taken from Holly Carter Dunlop above is that none of us has a firm handle on the dating of these Carters of Goochland.
For example, in a prior message from Dan Wallace: "Thomas Carter Jr.'s [that's Junior] Last Will and Testament was written 14 February 1760 and was recorded in Goochland County on 19 April 1763. If his sons were named in chronological order, his oldest would have been Thomas [III], then John, then Josiah, then Baynes. In his Will, Thomas Carter refers to his ?Youngest sons, that is to say John Carter, Josiar [sic] Carter, and Baynes Carter.? He also refers to his wife Mary Carter. Mary may have been Mary Kilpatrick based on the 1751 marriage recorded in the Douglas Register for Thomas Carter to Mary Kilpatrick".
Even Dan Wallace originally skipped a generation! A marriage in 1751 HAS to be Thomas III.
Once again with emphasis, it's Senior, Junior and Thomas the Third.

Rebecca R. Dyer, Descendant of Baynes:
?In the name of God Amen, February 14th, 1760:
?To my Dear beloved son Baynes Carter the land I now live on containing 225 acres with my house and plantation also one middle sized Rone mare with a white spot in her face. . .she and her increase forever also one new man's saddle and bridle.?
Beginning in the early 1770's, there was a migration of families from the Goochland County and surrounding area to southwest Virginia. Descendants of these families (Carter, Atkins(on), Dillon, Callaway, Tatum, Anthony, Bowman, Stoval, and others) can still be found in the beautiful and remote hills of Patrick and Henry Counties today. Baynes Carter and his brothers Josiah and John, third generation Carters, were among the early settlers who made their way south and west for better opportunities and more productive land.
A 1773 Goochland County deed shows Baynes Carter and his widowed mother Mary, now of Pittsylvania County, selling their home place to Samuel Coleman Morris. Beginning a year or so prior to the sale of the Goochland County home place, Baynes, Josiah and John had begun to leave records in Pittsylvania, Bedford and Henry Counties.
In August of 1774, records show that Baynes Carter, about age 18 or 19, received pay for 82days service under Captain Abraham Penn in the conflict between the Colony of Virginia and the Native Americans of the Ohio Valley. This conflict, Dunmore?s War, was named for the Royal Governor of Virginia, Lord Dunmore, who organized a large militia to ultimately prevent the Delaware, Mingo, and Shawnee from settling or hunting south of the Ohio River. John Carter, an elder brother of Baynes, served in this conflict as well.
Just three years later, Baynes Carter (age 22) and his brother Josiah, along with other citizens of Henry County, Virginia, were called upon to renounce their allegiance to Great Britain and swear their allegiance to the Commonwealth of Virginia. Their signatures appear on the on 30 August 1777 list of Edmond Lyne, Esquire. This demonstrates that both men supported the impending Revolution and qualifies their descendants for membership in the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution. Josiah is also recorded in the Virginia Publick Claims for Henry County as being reimbursed for provisions supporting the war:
Monday, 06 May 1782: 5s-6 for 3 diets, 1 bu corn, 1 peck do. Furnished Hugh Armstrong on march to General Greene with county lead; 4s-6 for 150 bundles fodder furnished Jacob Gore quarter master Genl. 1st Regt, Light Dragoons; 10s for 4 bu corn meal furnished a guard with British prisoners on march from the southward to Winchester; 12s for 3 bu rye for 4 teams on return from Charlotte in North Carolina to Peytonsburg by cert. from Wm. McCraw ADQM.
Friday, 24 May 1782: 42s for a saddle impressed for hospital at Henry Courthouse & lost.
Few records have surfaced on Baynes Carter but we know that he purchased ?sundries? at the estate sale of John Hail in Pittsylvania County (Inventory recorded 26 September 1774). He also served as a guard for his county in 1777: ?Henry County Levy is made to Baines [sic] Carter, guarding, same 5 days.? On 21 July 1778, Henry County deeds show Josiah Carter conveying and selling to his brother Baynes 89 ? acres of land crossing Little Reedy Creek and Reed Creek to the mouth of said creek on Smith River. Over the next few years, several other Henry County land transactions are recorded concerning Baynes Carter. In 1780, Josiah Carter transferred some of his Reedy Creek property to his brother Baynes due to damages sustained by Baynes resulting from a grist mill operation. [This land is located near the present-day intersection of Route 220 and State Route 57 between Bassett and Collinsville, Virginia. Josiah Carter?s grist mill was still standing there as of !
1920.] About the time Josiah Carter transferred the Reedy Creek property to his brother Baynes, Josiah, along with a contingent of other Henry County, Virginia, families, migrated farther south to the state of Georgia.
It?s not until a land transaction on 24 June 1784 that we learn Baynes Carter has a wife: Baynes Carter and his wife Martha sell 221 ? acres of land on Reed Creek to George Hairston*. To date no marriage record or bond has been found and Martha?s surname remains unknown, but other records conclude that Baynes and Martha had been married at least 10 years by this time. In 1788, just a few years after the sale of the 221 ? acres of land, Baynes Carter passed away, leaving a widow and a son Jesse, age 13.**

Long a familiar landmark on Halifax County's historic and scenic River Road, Carter's Tavern is a handsomely restored example of an early southern Virginia ordinary. With virtually all of its original interior fabric intact, the venerable frame building provides a rare picture of the character and arrangement of this once common Virginia institution. An outstanding feature of the tavern is the great quantity of well-preserved grained and marbelized woodwork, some of which is unusually ornate.
The building's earliest portion is the one-and-a-half-story wing, probably erected before 1773 by Joseph Dodson. Licenses issued in 1802 and 1804 indicate that Dodson's younger son, Joseph, Jr., operated an ordinary there in what was also his residence. In 1807 Dodson sold the
building and 67 acres to Samuel Carter. Carter is believed to have enlarged the building to its present size by tearing down part of the Dodson house and erecting the two-story main section. In any case, the enlarged building enabled Carter to operate an overnight stage stop. The earliest recorded license issued to him, in 1821, authorized Carter to keep "a house of private entertainment" a this residence. His license was renewed in 1824, 1829, 1830, 1833, 1834, and 1835.
Following Carter's death in 1836 his wife, Elizabeth, [Elizabeth 'Betsy' Holcombe (nee Cocke)] took over operation of the establishment. As the River Road was a lap on the main stage road between New York and New Orleans, Carter ' s Tavern remained an important stopping place. "Betsy" Carter continued as proprietress of the tavern until her death in 1843, at which time it was permanently closed. In 1860 Samuel Carter's son, Philemon, sold the property to Dr. Thomas Haynie. The Haynie family owned it u n t i l 1898 when the building and 150 acres was sold to Mrs. Martha E. Reaves. After the Reaves family sold the property in 1941 it passed through various owners until 1972 when the derelict, decaying building was acquired by Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Edmunds, of Halifax County
and Greensboro, North Carolina. The Edmunds munificently undertook a thorough restoration of the building for no other reason than to preserve it. -CCL
Handsomely furnished, Carter's Tavern is now made available for special tours and meetings.

Capt. Thomas Carter, who came to Virginia prior to 1652-it is thought to Nansemond County-was a captain of the militia, justice, deputy clerk of his county, Burgess (?), etc. Purchased a large plantation on the Corotoman River from Col. John Carter and was settled there in 1652. Of his descendants this volume (speaking of Dr. Miller's book) is the first published account, except some preliminary notes in the William and Mary Quarterly.
The purpose of this treatise is to provide new research conducted by Carter researchers and genealogists. And, 1.) propose that CPT Thomas Carter of Barford Plantation likely had a father in Lancaster named Maj. Thomas Carter; 2.) shed new light on the origins of the Thomas Carters, and 3). argue a familial connection, or kinship, between the "Corotoman Carters," Thomas and John. | Carter, Thomas Sr. (I67889)

Giles Carter, who came to Virginia several years later than the others, and died in Henrico County in 1701 at the age of 67 years, leaving sons Giles and Theodorick, and daughters Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Williamson. So far as known he never held any military or political position, and is supposed to have belonged to the Gloucester Carters. His descendants were chiefly settled in Henrico, Goochland, Prince Edward, and Halifax counties. An interesting account of them has been published by Gen. W. H. G. George K. Smith (the last ancestor that I have authentic proof of in 1953 - BTA) owned around 1100 acres of land in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on Tomahawk Creek (near Museville). According to family tradition, he was born near Museville, Virginia and buried near Tomahawk, Va. where he lived. Family tradition says he was a miller. Value of property, $15,302; George K. Smith married Susan Adkins and had the following issue:
1. Booker (Bowker) Smith was never married. He built the R.J. Reynolds tobacco factory and manufactured tobacco. He had a train of wagons and sold it through the Carolinas and Georgia. He died in early manhood so showed a genius for business ability quite young. (This line of Smith's are related to R.J.Reynolds' wife according to Dr. George Smith Anderson, nephew of Booker Smith). According to his tombstone at the old Smith home near Tomahawk he died Sepember 23, 1841.
2. Ralph Smith, born September 1, 1813; d. January7, 1902; married 7th December 1843, Ardennia Wright (b. Jan. 14, 1827;d. Jan. 24, 1904). Ralph was
willed land on Tomahawk Creek by his father, Geo. K. Smith, and his son, William lived on a farm adjoining that of his brother, Ralph.
3. William Smith, born September 2, 1818; died August 2,1896. He married February 18, 1856 Rebecca Hodnett (b. Sept. 28,1852;d. July 11, 1904). He owned a vast amount of land on Tomahawk Creek and had many slaves who stayed on with him even after the war as long as he lived, thus making it most profitable for him. He was a very successful farmer. During the Civil War he lost a leg but this did not seem to handicap him in anyway. He once rode horseback alone to Kentucky with nine thousand dollars in his pocket and purchased 1000 acres of land from a Mr. Grubb for himself, Mr. Joe Reynolds and Ward Reynolds which extended from Greenpond back to Bearskin Creek, etc.
He and wife were buried at their old home place where the home and tombstones still stand (1953).
4. Jabez Smith married Catherine Ann Mahan and died without issue. They were buried at the old home place near Tomahawk.
5. Rhoda Smith married John Reynolds and lived near Greenpond Church and they, too, are buried at their old homeplace. Adkins-Oakes Cemetery
6. Mary (Polly) Smith married Demarcus (Mark) Anderson, son of Jesse Anderson of Franklin County. Their descendants in the Anderson Family Book.
7. Eliza Beth (Betsey) married Dec. 21, 1837, Naaman Mahan and are buried at their old homeplace.
8. Nancy Smith, born April 11, 1823; died Oct. 6,1869; married Jan. 16, 1843, Watt Otey Anderson (b. August 18, 1816; d.April 27, 1883). They lived near Greenpond Church and are buried at the family burial ground on his farm. Their descendants in the Anderson Family Book.
9. Letitia Smith married Ambrose Rucker on December 12, 1853. He was a Captain of Co. "C" 46th Regt., Virginia Infantry. He was at one time a sheriff of some county. They had dau. Mary Rucker md. a Dewberry and dau.Victoria md. Kange Simpson. | Smith, George K. (I11949)
