Like any abstract, only the details the compilier considered important are included. However, this series does two things for you, if your ancestor is listed in this series:

1. You know for certain the records are at the National Archives.
2. You get a good indication of what information is in the pension archives for your ancestor, so can you determine if requesting copies of the actual pension records is worth the expense.

If your ancestor is not listed in these volumes, there may still be pension records available at the National Archives. The index is based on the compilier's interpretation of the hand-writing. Be sure to check the index for all spelling variations of the surname.

 

Reprint (Volume 1). Originally published: List of the Revolutionary soldiers of Virginia. Richmond : D. Bottom, superintendent of Public Printing, 1912. Reprint (Volume 2). Originally published: List of the Revolutionary soldiers of Virginia. Supplement. Richmond : D. Bottom, superintendent of Public Printing, 1913. The present report differs from the other in that it is chiefly made up of names taken from the Continental rolls in the War Department in Washington.

Abbreiviation Explanation: S. of W. (Secretary of War) 1835, Pen. (Pension) 2. "Report from the Secretary of War ... in relation to Pension Establishment of the United States." Vols. 2. Washington, 1835.
War (follwed by a numeral): A collection of MS. (manuscript) volumes bearing on the military establishment of the State during and after the Revolution. War 4, 5, 8, 20 and 23 are the chief references in this series.
