The tract of land is from the half of the land Sarah Devin received in the will (Pittsylvania County Virginia Deed and Will Book 11 pages 243-244) of her father, William Devin, Sr., that she was entitled to sell if she had no lawful heirs. The deed specifically mentions that the tract is part of the land bequieved to Sarah in her father's will. This deed helps to establish where William Devin, Sr. lived when he died, because it helps to define the land where Sarah was living. Another part of the half was deeded to James Oakes in Deed Book 49: 275-276.

left her by her grandfather, also one good horse & saddle & bridle, a good
cow & calf, a good sow & pigs, 2 ews & lambs, a trunk, & personality. .To my three sons Joseph, Richard & William Kirby my low grounds on Dan by equal division, Viz. Joseph to have the upper end adjoining Lawson's line & Richard to have the lower end joining Boyd's line & William Kirby to have tbe middle part Joseph to have the part out joinipg Bird's line, etc. To my two sons Richard & William Kirby my tract on Burches Creek in Halifax by equal' division Richard the upper half & W~lliam the lower on the Creek. 1850 Census for Pittsylvania Co., Virginia says he was born in North Carolina; however, the 1860 census says Virginia, as is reported for his sister Martha Ann.
MILITARY: He served as 2nd Lieutenant, Co., B., 38 Virginia Infantry (National Archives, "Civil War Compiled Military Service Records"). This unit was recruited in Pittsylvania County. MARRIAGE: When he married his security was provided by William L. Jackson his brother, He was over 21 at the time of his marriage, putting his birth about 1828. In 1859 James Andrew his wife Martha J., and sister Susan Martin sold the land they had inherited from Levi Jackson to James A. Mitchell (Pitts DB 58, page 320, February 25, 1859). Death: Mike K. Williams, "Pittsylvania Co., VA Births and Deaths," 1998. Stonewall Jackson, his great grandson said he was murdered near Grady in Pittsylvania Co., by a man named Hankins who was the only person ever hanged in Chatham, the courthouse for Pittsylvania County. This is validated by an article in Piedmont Lineages, Vol XXIX, No. 3, August 2007, page 84: "Hankins was no stranger to violence. In the 1872 he cut James A. Jackson, inflicting wounds which proved to be fatal. He was convicted of second degree murder and served a 10 year term in the penitentiary." (In 1897 he murdered Dr. John R. Cabell and was hanged in November of that year.)
