- 1840 US Census TN Knox Image 74: Peyton Carter 40-50,
M Under 5 (Pascal?), Four F Under 5, F 5-10, F 15-20, Three F 40-50, Female 70-80 **
1850 TN Knox, Division 31, Image 25, Household 175: This is clearly ONEY Catherine Carter - Female:
Payton Carter 53 VA, Lusindy 41 VA, Elizabeth 13, Mary 11, Paskell [sic] 10, Oney Catherine 9,
John P. 8, Darthula 7, Payton 6, Lucy Ann 5, William 2
1850 US Census TN Jefferson, District 13, ** HAS to be Ohne Waddell Carter
Household 410: William P. Carter 40 VA Blacksmith, Jane 37 TN, with Andrew, George (deaf and dumb), Catherine, Margaret, Samuel, Sarah and Joseph.
Household 412: William & Jane Hendricks from VA ONEY Carter 72 VA (but has to be older than 72) **
The 1860 census is suggestive, Paton/Peyton could well be the older brother five
households away; the accurate date of birth taken together with the combination
of Payton and Pascal can not be dismissed lightly. [Now proven beyond doubt
with the Eudaley family data].
1860 US Census TN Knox, District 16,
Household 142 Paton Carter 63 Farmer VA, Lucinda 51 VA, Pascal 20 TN, ** Owen ** 19, John 18, Payton Jr. 16, Darthulia 15, Paton 15, Ann 13, William 11
Yes, clearly Owen - at age 19 - but with both a Male and Female designation!
Fair's Fair - how would you pronounce "Ohney" - in East Tennessee while you're at it?
Household 147 William Carter 50 VA Blacksmith, Jane 48, Margaret 18, Sarah 12, Joseph 10, James 5

Mary Ann Eliasson Carter GenForum
William Presley Carter, 1810, married Jane Conway Gass (d/o Mary Collins Moyer and Rev Andrew Powell Gass) in 1830 and had 9 kids (John Quincy Adams, Andrew P, George Wm, Catharine N, Margaret E, Samuel Thomas, Sarah, Joseph R & Jame Malone) all in Dandridge, Jefferson, Tennessee. His family starts migrating to Bonham, Fannin, Texas about 1855. He is in Strawberry Plains, Knox, Tn in 1860 and makes it to Bonham Texas in 1870. He dies in Whitewright, Texas in 1895.
"While in Tennessee his neighbors are Pascal, Peyton & Oney Carter. A Presley Carter who died in 1840 is buried in Dandridge. Logically he should be related to them. Yet, none of his children or descendants are named Pascal, Peyton, Henrietta, Stewart, Thornton or Oney. The names that keep repeating in his family are Presley, George, William, Joseph, Samuel, Catherine and Anne. Also, while both Presley Carter and Pascal are supposed to have sons named William, his 1810 birth date is a problem". ** Mary Jane
The mother of Jane Gass is Mary Polly Collins. Her father and grandfather were named John. There is a John Collins that shows up in one of these Carter's deed's. Mary Polly Collins is buried close to the gravestone for the Presley Carter that died in 1840 in Dandridge. Peyton Carter first married Elizabeth Eudaley, she died and he married her sister Lucinda in 1835. A Mrs Elizabeth Carter died in 1835 and is buried in the same cemetery. I think that she is Peyton's first wife.
