3216 John fought against England in the Revolutionary War (Dessa Hofstetter; "The Devin Family"; page 2; ...William and Sarah Devin's four oldest sons were in the Revolutionary War. John was wounded and while confined to his room carved a powder horn and gave it to his brother Alexander, who was not old enough to go to war. ...)

Dessa's Booklet quotes (page 5) a letter from Robert Ira Devin to Alfred Harrison Devin, saying "My grandfather William Devin, Jr. was born in Pittsylvania County, Va. and was a soldier three years in the War of the Revolution. Two of his brothers, John and Robert, were with him in the army. John was severly wounded by being shot through the body, but he, wonderful to relate, entirely recovered and afterward died at the home of his lady love to whom he was engaged to be married, while on a visit to see her. The pantaloons he had on when wounded were preserved for many years by the family as an heirloom that showed the bullet hole on each side that passed through his body."

Not named in his Father's will, dated 25.November.1800

The children of John and Lucy are Mary Susan Neal (17 Nov 1861 - 05 Jul 1935) and William Howard Neal (21 Aug 1862 - 28 Sep 1923). Mary Susan Neal married John B. Powell in Caswell Co. on 29 Apr 1878. He was the son of M. J. Powell and Susan. Susan Neal Powell is buried in Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery. William Howard Neal married Alma W. 3225 John was a very good bear hunters and was fearless. One story is written that other men were frightened to go into a cave just a mile up the creek from the family mill, but John and his brother, George, entered, shot once and drug out a 450 pound bear. The meat and grease lasted for a month or two. [Beck & Tittle Footprints; Alexander D. Beck biography; 01.October.1998]. Beck, John Jacob (I2476)

3226 John White, brother of Asa, Jr., was living at Mount Holly on 4 Nov 1844 when he gave testimony in connection with his mother's application for a Revolutionary War pension. He was also the administrator for his father's estate, even though Asa Jr. (or 2) was older. The records don't say why as far as has been researched. A marriage record hasn't been found either. There was at least one more John White in Mount Holly at the same time, possibly more, so the records are hard to decipher. It looks like this John White was called John White 1, as he was older than another John White who was also living in Mount Holly. The burial records for Ludlow have a JOhn White of the correct age, dying on this date. White, John (I5097)

3231 Johnson rode a horse with a pleasing appearance and dignity. His erect posture on a horse and his oneness with the animal's movements was a delight to see. Johnson enjoyed fox hunting, did not use alcohol or tobacco, although he raised tobacco for his money crop, and used profanity freely although he was a religious man. Reynolds, Keene Johnson (I8258)

3238 Joseph Reynolds is identified as Joseph M. Reynolds on a pay document from the Revolutionary War. We speculate that his middle name is Middleton.

3243 Judith Townes is often shown as the first wife of Theodorick Carter by reputable researchers, with these listed children; however, if Theodorick married Sally Ellbank in 1763, as is listed, then these children would be hers. There is something missing in this research.-Mary Frances Eggleston Family F4412

3245 Julia was over 23 years older than I, so I remember her only as an adult. She was the smallest adult in the family-perhaps 5'3", blond, and pretty. Mother used to say jokingly that Julia was the onl one of her children she didn't have to "look Up to," for Mother was shorter than Julia. She attended school in Danville; the one that later became Averette, I think. She liked to do things for others and did not like to be on the "receiving end" too often. She was a good manager of finances, an excellent seamstress, and a lover of music, and a devout believer in her Lord.

3246 Kate was the sister nearest me in years, although she was nearly ten years older than I. Kate was pretty and happy-go-lucky. When I first started to school at Renan, I walked (or ran) with Kate. She could walk much faster than I could then~ She married Clack Hubbard when I was not quite 10 years old, and for awhile they lived on a farm on the Hubbard place. Later they obtained some of the land belonging to Daddy and Mother and kept a store at Renan, having built a nice home and s store on the land. Kate was a good business woman, doing a professional job of selling at the store if Clack was busy at other things. She was well liked by her customers.

3249 Keene Johnson Reynolds was born November 30, 1861, a few months after the Civil War began. He was the ninth and youngest child of William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair. The Reynolds' home was near Tomahawk Creek in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Keene Johnson Reynolds was called by his middle name, Johnson, or simply Johnse, by those who knew him best. His Mother called him "Johnsie". When he was born, four of his six brothers were serving in the Confederate Army and his father, William Garrett, was a member of the Home Guard..When the war began John S. (age 21 or 22), and Henry C. (age 15) joined the Virginia forces or at least they joined before the war ended.
