Notes |
- Keene Johnson Reynolds was born November 30, 1861, a few months after the Civil War began. He was the ninth and youngest child of William Garrett Reynolds and Elizabeth Elvira "Betsy" Blair. The Reynolds' home was near Tomahawk Creek in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Keene Johnson Reynolds was called by his middle name, Johnson, or simply Johnse, by those who knew him best. His Mother called him "Johnsie". When he was born, four of his six brothers were serving in the Confederate Army and his father, William Garrett, was a member of the Home Guard..When the war began John S. (age 21 or 22), and Henry C. (age 15) joined the Virginia forces or at least they joined before the war ended.
- Johnsie was about six or seven years old when his father, William Garrett died. About the same time, he fell out of a tree which caused him to have a slight limp for the rest of his life.
- Johnson rode a horse with a pleasing appearance and dignity. His erect posture on a horse and his oneness with the animal's movements was a delight to see. Johnson enjoyed fox hunting, did not use alcohol or tobacco, although he raised tobacco for his money crop, and used profanity freely although he was a religious man.
- Our farm was not large--100 acres given to Daddy and Mother by Grandmother and Grandfather Brumfield and about 100 acres added by Daddy and Mother. The crops were somewhat varied on our farm; tobacco, (the money crop), wheat, corn, hay, beans, and perhaps some oats. We had fruit trees: apples, peaches, plums, cherries, carrots, and one apricot. And there were strawberries and grapevines. Of course we had a garden. Daddy raised enough hogs for his family's use. Mother's aim each year was to get 300 baby chicks (hatched on the farm) for home use. We had fried chicken often. Most times Mother would dress six or more chickens for our Sunday dinners. We had a few turkeys, but not many. There were about four horses to work the farm and ride. In addition, we had milk cows and beef cows enough for home consumption. Sometimes in the winter Daddy would kill a beef, keep what his family could use (no refrigeration then) and give or sell the rest to the neighbors. We had plenty of food to feed our big family and to share with visitors. And Visitors we had.

- On November 14, 1883 when Daddy was nearly 22 and Mother was sixteen, they were married at her home, "The Elms" near what is now Renan. Mother's family had moved from the Greenpond-Hollywood neighborhood to Renan in 1882. The first year of their marriage, Daddy and Mother lived with his mother, Betsy Blair Reynolds, and farmed with her. The next year, they moved to the land Grandfather Brumfield had given them at Renan. The home they built was located below what later became the highway. Mother had wanted to be on high ground, however, the house was placed just a few yards from one of the best springs anywhere around and, in the days when water was brought in by bucketsful and a springhouse was the only means of cooling food, having a spring nearby was a real asset.
