3110 Irbin Finley Devin is not a descendant of William Devin (d:180) of Pittsylvania County Virginia.

Considerable resarch time and effort has gone into linking Irbin Finley Devin to the Devin families out of Pittsylvania County Virginia. His proximity in time and location to the other Devin families in Lincoln County Tennessee, who are descendants from Pittsylvania County, suggested a possible family link.

However, DNA testing shows males from the Irbin Finley Devin lines and the males from the William Devin (d:1802) lines out of Pittsylvania County do not share a common ancestor for more than 50 generations. In fact, DNA samples from the Irbin Finley Devin lines do not closely match any of the major clusters with a surname variation of Devin.

More yDNA samples are needed from multiple males lines descendant from Irbin Finley Devin to establish the genetic markers for Irbin. If the current DNA markers for Irbin hold true, it suggests either an adoption or non-marital pregnacy.

    _______________

Bella Poteat Foster says she doesn't know why the Gillespie school was discontinued but it was where she went the first year. Miss Gertie Jones of Yanceyville remembers that when she was six around the turn of the century she went to Gillespie's and thinks there got to be more families living toward Yanceyville and that the New Hope School took over those to the east. Bella says her father gave the timber for the building described in Caswell's Architectural Inventory as "Small, gable-front building with overhanging eaves, single front panelled door. Originally served as a one room school."

3124 It appears from the records that he went to America, where he died in the early part of 1659. It is probable that his wife and children remained at Stepney. It is found in the London records that Edmond Pike was appointed curator on 1 Aug 1659, "to Sarah, Margaret and James Harwood, minors, children of Andrew Harwood, late in ye Virginia [New England was part of Virginia in early colonial times] in parts beyond ye seas, deceased,' and 12 Dec 1659, administration was granted to Elizabeth Harwood, 'relict of Andrew Harwood, of Stepney, but in parts beyond ye seas, deceased.' It would look as if Andrew visited America with a view of later bringing his family there, but died before carrying out his plan. Harwood, Andrew (I5058)

3125 It appears that Mary Bigger and Suzannah Bigger are both daughters of James, and married father and son, Richard and John Carter Bigger, Mary "Polly" (I67995)

3126 It appears that this family migrated to Tennessee between 1842 and 1847 shown as the births of his children. One born in Virginia in 1842 and the next born in Tennessee in 1847. This information given shows he married two women in the same year; so I doubt he had more than one wife. It is probably Sarah Vaden of Pittsylvania Co., VA who was his wife. Also he is said to have died in 1860; and then shown as 90 in the household of his son John in 1880 in Tennessee.  Mitchell, James Allen (I10568)

3127 It is apparent that Dorothy was a widow when she married Edmund, as there was a Joseph Robinson named in Edmund's will, who was clearly not a son-in-law, as all of Edmunds sons and daughters were named also. Joseph Robinson died at Andover in 1719 at the age of about 74, so he was born about 1645, two years before Dorothy married Edmund. They were married in Salem, MA so she may have been from there. One source on Ancestry.com says that her surname was RAYMOND. Raymond, Dorothy (I5199)

3128 It is called the Gray edition because it has a gray cover. It is basically the same as the Red Edition, but contains an eulogy to Dessa from the President of Monmouth College. Several pages were retyped to replace existing pages. The author of the changes does not acknowledge his or her work. All changes occurred after Dessa's death in 1966. Source (S67494)

3129 It is likely that the children listed for Sally Ellbank and Judith Cunningham are given the wrong mother; somehow the dates researched do not agree with marriages and births. Further research is underway. Ellbank, Sarah 'Sally' (I68170)

3130 It is likely that this line connects with Sharpe Reynolds b.c.1750 Isle of Wight, VA  Sharpe, Elizabeth (I3593)

3131 It is not certain, but is probable that the John Grant who lived in Cotttingham moved to Hessle between 1598 and 1600. Grant, John (I5444)

3132 It is often stated Henry Reynolds came to America with William Penn. Henry came to America in 1676, and William Penn came to America in 1682. Henry Reynolds is also reputed to be the founder of the village of Rising Sun, MD by opening a Public House. Other sources say Henry never lived in Rising Sun. Henry was shown as a non-resident taxpayer for his property in the Nottingham Lots from March 1718 to 1722. Henry appeared before the Chester Co. Court 14 Mar 1681, for selling strong liquors by small measure in his house contrary to the Governor's and Council's order. His will, dated 1720 states he lives in Chichester and has no mention of a public house. The north lot near Rising Sun MD, bequeathed to Henry Jr. is described as a plantation. The south lot near Rising Sun Md., bequeathed to William is described as a tract of land.
Henry Reynolds' Will (excerpt)To son Francis the plantation where I live in Chichester containing 290 acres, he paying his bother William when 21, 20 pounds. To son Henry tract of land in Nottingham containing 490 acres. To son William, tract in Nottingham [being a south lott] containing 490 acres. To each of my daughters, viz Margaret, Prudence, Doborah and Hannah 1 shilling each. To wife Prudence all personal estate, also executrix. Witness: William Clayton, John Hanby.

3133 It is possible that 9 July 1791 is their marriage bond date and 10 July 1795 is the date of their marriage. Family F0340

3134 It is possible that William Nealey (Mary's father) is the same William Neely in the 1757 tax list for Martic township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Along with Hugh Reynolds and William Divin. Nealey, Mary (I4009)

3135 It is probable that Richard, his wife, Sarah, and their 2 children immigrated to New England in 1635, and first settled in the Cambridge area. On 10 May 1643, he was admitted as a Freeman to MA Bay Colony. This is the first recorded notice of him being in MA. From this time on his name frequently occurs in town and church affairs in Cambridge; and after 1656 in Chelmsford, MA.
Richard, the immigrant ancestor, was born in 1605, in northern England, in or near the parish of Gainford, in the County of Durham, according to many authorities. The year of his birth is established by the inscription on his slate gravestone in the old burying ground at Chelmsford, MA.
The inscription on his gravestone states: "Richard Hildreth, Aged 88 years, Died February 23, 1693."
    Hildreth, Richard (I4875)

3136 It is reported that Lemuel was of age to choose his guardian after the death of his father, Richard Carter and that he chose John Carter, (his brother) who was then of an age to be his guardian. Carter, Lemuel (I67959)

3137 It is said the Elizabeth could cut more wheat than any may she ever raced against. [Beck & Tittle Footprints; Alexander D. Beck biography; 01.October.1998]. Claver, Elizabeth (I2547)

3138 It is unclear how Elizabeth met Mark White. There are no records showing that he belonged to any of the White families living in Charlestown during the early 1700s. Perhaps he worked for the Mousall family after he immigrated from Great Britain. The Mousalls had quite a bit of land by this time. Charlestown was the point of entry for many immigrants coming to New England during the great migration of 1635 and after. There were many young men who came to New England to work and establish themselves, when they couldn't get land in England. This was a common practice in the 1600s and 1700s.He may have been a younger son and/or indentured himself to someone in Charleston to earn his passage. No records have been found on any indentureship or on his passage from Great Britain so far. Since the Mousalls were quite well established in Charlestown and Mark White was a poor yeoman, he may have been working for them on their land. Many of the descendants of James' son John Warwick still reside in Clay County, Missouri. 8 Jan 1815 James was in the Battle of New Orleans, under General Andrew Jackson. Members of the Sparta Baptist Church James owned seven slaves at the time of his death and requested that they remain in the Reynolds family. Names of the slaves were Joseph, Winkfield, Cady, Soiy, Rososi, Gilbert and George.
Frances Smithey-Crisp's birth was the result of an affair between her mother, Nancy (Carmichael) Smithey, whose husband had been killed in the Revolutionary War and John Crisp, who had been appointed administrator of the estate of Nancy's deceased husband. Frances Smithey-Crisp was bound to Mary Warwick (possibly a sister of Nancy Smithey) in 1788 at the age of 4. In 1786 her brother Reuben Smithey was bound to John Warwick, Mary Warwick's husband. This is undoubtedly the John Warwick for whom Frances named her first son.
