- It is probable that Richard, his wife, Sarah, and their 2 children immigrated to New England in 1635, and first settled in the Cambridge area. On 10 May 1643, he was admitted as a Freeman to MA Bay Colony. This is the first recorded notice of him being in MA. From this time on his name frequently occurs in town and church affairs in Cambridge; and after 1656 in Chelmsford, MA.
Richard, the immigrant ancestor, was born in 1605, in northern England, in or near the parish of Gainford, in the County of Durham, according to many authorities. The year of his birth is established by the inscription on his slate gravestone in the old burying ground at Chelmsford, MA.
The inscription on his gravestone states: "Richard Hildreth, Aged 88 years, Died February 23, 1693."
