Joseph: Looking back over you history I found this note. Need to share a couple of things. We are similar in that Giles married Hannah and I prefer to think it is Crewes. History supports this pretty well altho there is no proof as yet. This Giles came in 1653 passage paid by William Fry. He was born 1634 and will probabted 1700. Theodrick married Elizabeth Webb Randolph and he had children Ann, Susannah, Theodrick, Martha, Mary, Hannah, John and Elizabeth.

Theodrick's siblings: Susannah, Mary and Ann and Giles born 1682 who married Mary Povall.

The one thing you write of is a myth which persists and I can say this with authority. In the 1970's my father and I went to England. We visited a little English village called Cold Aston. There is a small church there, quite charming and very old. There are two ancient plaques on the wall there that commemorate Giles Carter who married Elizabeth Tracey. The first one you see hangs near the door and states that this was a very devoted and good couple who died "without issue" --NO CHILDREN. This is further substantiated by the other plaque which is back in a dark corner and states that Giles and Elizabeth left their holdings (estate) to two hephews--Edward and Goddard.

We spent the rest of the week in and out of libraries and churches in the area. Nothing refutes those two plaques. Although it is possible to find other Giles' it is for all easy searches impossible to find out who Giles 1634-1700 was the son of or where he left England from. We assumed for our search that he left from Glousteshire and that PERHAPS he was from this family but he definetely is not the son of Giles and Elizabeth Tracy Carter.

I look forward to hearing from you. Joy

I have received confirmation from the records office in Gloucestershire, England, of the baptismal record of Giles Carter, who immigrated to Henrico County, Virginia. Here is the actual reply I received:

"A member of staff checked the baptism register for the parish of Cirencester (P86) for the year 1635 and I can confirm that the baptism of Gyles, son of Theodor [?Theodore] Cartor is recorded. The spelling of names was not standardised until fairly recently and so the slight difference in spelling of both the christian and surnames is not significant."

More importantly, the name of his father is revealed!

WILLIAM CARTER married Frances Curtis, daughter of Rice Curtis, Sr., "Gent." of .Spotsylvania, prior to November 20, 1761, as on that date he had a deed from Rice Curtis, Jr., that shows this marriage. Wm. Carter appeared in a list of Spotsylvania slave owners in 1783 as owner of ten
servants. His will, probated in Spotsylvania November 26, 1802, mentions his wife Frances Carter, daughters Lucy Aylett, Elizabeth Belinda, Sarah wife of Edmund Foster, Frances wife of Rice Connor; sons Rice, John and John's daughter Polly, Guilford D., Kenyon, and Abraham; stepmother Hannah Carter; and half sister Elizabeth Carter. He also had a daughter who married James Hume, as September 15, 1794, Wm. Carter made a deed of gift to James Hume for four negroes in trust for Wm. Lewis Hume, son of the said James and grandson of the said Wm. Carter. September 1, 1789, he made a deed of gift to his son John for 216 acres of land in Berkeley Parish.
In 1788 John Carter was married to Mary Herndon, born May 4, 1770, and still living in 1834. John Carter's will, probated in Spotsylvania October 2, 1815, mentions wife, daughter "Polly" and sons Joseph, John, and James. Friend John W. Herndon executor. Polly Carter married, September 24, 1830, .Captain Thomas M. Horn. Mary Herndon Carter was a daughter of Joseph Herndon, of "Mattaponi," Spotsylvania, and his second wife Mary Minor, whom he married August 15, 1765.
She was a daughter of John and Sarah Scott Minor, and was born March 7, 1741, and died October 26, 1822. Joseph Herndon, born May 1, 1737, died October 28, 1810, lived on a beautiful estate about six miles southeast of Fredericksburg. He was a 'graduate of the University of Edinburgh, and took a prominent part in the political life of his county. For further notice of the Herndons see the Virgin£a Historical Magazine, Vols. IX., X., -and XI.
JOHN CARTER was commissioned captain in the Spotsylvania Militia September 18, 1777. Owned nine servants in 1783 before his father's death. May 1, 1794, Captain John Carter and wife Mary and sister Margaret Marshall, widow ,deeded twenty-eight acres of land formerly belonging to their father, John Carter, Sr., to Dr. Robert Wellford. He died in Spotsylvania about 1812, but I have no copy of his will.

FRANCES CARTER married Rice Curtis, III.. 3 son of Rice Curtis, Jr. (will probated 1774), who was a son of Rice Curtis. Sr. (will probated 1753). and his wife Elizabeth.. August 27. 1779. Rice Curtis made a deed to his children named as follows: Nancy. John, Elizabeth, Mary, Frances Margaret, George Bartemeus, and James. Mentions wife Frances Carter Curtis. No further data.

Regarding the descendants of Captain John Carter, Sr ., of Spotsylvania, and his two wives (Miss Armistead, of Caroline, and Hannah Chew, daughter of Captain John and Margaret Beverley Chew, of Spotsylvania, and granddaughter of Captain Harry Beverley) , his great-granddaughter by the second marriage, Mrs. J. N .Hook, Clemsen College, S. C., has supplied interesting data from old letters and an account of the family prepared about 1845 by a grandson of Captain Carter-Hon. Norborne E. Sutton, of Caroline.
Captain Carter',s home was near the Spotsylvania-Caroline line about sixteen miles west of Bowling Green. It is said to have been a large brick house, and that he lived there in considerable style. In the division of the property a£ter his death the house and 142 acres of the home plantation fell to the share of Mrs. Margaret Chew Talliaferro, who was the only one of his children who removed from Virginia. Her sister, Mrs. Burton Talliaferro, however rented it instead of building on her own portion. The old mansion was burned in 1825, and the bricks sold later for other purposes. Major Benjamin Alsop, writing in 1827 to Mr. Zachariah Talliaferro, says: "YOUR place is truly unlucky after the mansion house was burnt, Mrs. Lucy Talliaferro repaired the Overseers house and livd in that and a few days before last Christmas it took fire and was burnt down. She is still living on the land near where the old house stood, has put a Chimney to the Carriage house & is living in that in a Very uncomfortable manner." He continues, "Mrs. Talliaferro talks very Much of Coming to your Country as soon as she gets her" Matters rounded up." "We have had a very Cold Winter the coldest we have had for many years and at this time (March, 1827,) our roads are almost impassible."
In November , 1829, he writes: "Horace Marshall is broke and sold out. Was in Philadelphia the last I heard of him." (He was Captain Carter's grandson.) "Mrs. Mary B. Stevens has become very poor. She is living with her son Lewis at present. Lucy Stevens is with Mrs. L. Talia£erro." * ~ * "Capt. Stanard is still here, but in bad health." In January, 1830, he wrote: "With respect to your Old Acquaintances I will Endeavor to give you some Account. Larkin Stanard is still living-he has a Sore leg, which keeps him Confind. Henry C. Coleman is living in Caroline, Wm. & Zach. T. Wilson has been dead several years, the children of Wm. Taliaferro are all living but the oldest son Walker he has been dead sometime; the daughters all Married. Some doing pretty well & some badly. One of the daughters is dead and left 2 or 3 children. Your old friend James Carter is still living and well the last I heard of him. Capt. Jones & his wife are dead & the land sold and the children Squandered off. Col. Coleman's widow & her Children has moved to Kentucky, we have lately heard her oldest Son is dead. So goes the World some Coming in Others Going Out." Other letters show that Mrs. Hannah Carter died in 1821', leaving a personal estate valued at about $7,000.00 ; and that her son Robert and daughter Elizabeth died prior to 1827 unmarried.
    - About 1845 Mr. Sutton prepared a brief account of the descendants of his greatgrandfather, John Carter, in some of the branches of the family, from which the data here given is mainly taken. He mentioned no children of his own. He stated that his greatgrand£ather, John Carter, was an officer in the Revolution, and gave it on the authority of family tradition and the word of an officer who told him that he had served with him.
. MARY BEVERLEYG CARTER married Captain Richard Stevens, of Spotsylvania, and had issue-Lucy, Lewis, Robert, Hiram, Richard, Horace, Polly, and Judith. All married but the two younger sons, but I have no data of their descendants.
MARGARET CHEW CARTER , born January 14, 1771, in Spotsylvania, Virginia, died May 19, 1822, at her home, "Mt. Jolly," three miles £rom Pendleton, South Carolina. July 31, 1802, she was married to Zachariah Taliaferro, an old bachelor lawyer of South Carolina. He was born in Caroline county, Va, April .28, 1759, and died in South Carolina April 14, 1831.
ANNE CARTER married Wm. Heslop and. had a son Horace, and possibly other children.
SARAH CARTER married William Sutton, of Caroline county

On page 102 it was stated that Margaret Chew Carter, daughter"of John and Hannah Chew Carter, of Spotsylvania, was the wife of Captain John Marshall. She was the wife of Zachariah Taliaferro, of South Carolina, and had a half sister, Margaret Carter, who was the wife of Captain Marshall.
The illustrations for the April Quarterly were accidentally omitted, and will be given here.***
Who is This John Carter ? JOHN CARTER was twice married,
but had issue only by the first wife, who is thought to have been a Miss Spencer. He married second, in 1757, Mary, "widow of Mr. Thomas Pollard." In her will, dated February, 10, 1792, "Mary Carter, widow of John Carter, dec'd," left all her property to her children, Thomas and James Pollard and Mary Pollard James. The personal estate of "John Carter of Corotoman River Planter" was divided between his wife Mary Carter and his four children on March 25, 1783. This estate amounted to ? 237 6s. 6d, and included six negroes and a good lot of furniture contained in the following rooms: "The hall, the Chamber , the Red Room, the Upstairs, the kitchen, and the Sellar." He owned "a great Bible, 2 sermon Books, a Hymn Book and a parcel of old books." John Carter had issue :
John Cammack; b,1738 possibly in Spotsylvania County, Va.; m, Nancy Miller: A son
James b, 1769 in Spotsylvania Co., Va.; m, Susan Carter: A
daughter Cynthia b, 1819 in Bardstown, Ky.; m, my gggrandfather Franklin Peck Bishop. They both died and are buried in West Union, Fayette Co, Iowa.

THE FOLLOWING INFO. BELOW CAME FROM THE TRIGG BOOK I QUESTION SOME OF THE DATES,.BUT THIS IS HOW THEY APPEAR IN THE BOOK
NOTE:JKT -By Lester White. Copy of a document enclosed. Written on old ledger paper in pencil by some person apparently very much advanced in years. J.B. Trigg signed this document.

    Dear Friend :

Your of a few days ago is at hand and in answer will say that I don't know as who Wm. Trigg wife was as I can find no record to show her maiden name, but I know it was ANN. We have an old Bible date of 1812 and records of birth and death and marriages of Thomas Trigg family to the present day. The birth of Thomas Trigg, my Grandfather, is not recorded in it. His death is. He died 17 Jul. 1852, age 69 years, hence born in 1783. My Grandfather Thomas Trigg married Matilda Carter, 5 Oct. 1809. and only raised two children. Joseph W. Trigg and Isaac E. Trigg who was my father. I am the only son living out of five, 3 of my brothers and sisters died young. I had a brother 8 years older than myself killed during the war, accidentally in his 16th year, killed in 1864. My father Isaac E. Trigg married Catherine M. Fox on the 25th of Jan. 1838. My uncle, Joseph W. Trigg, also married my Mothers sister Amanda Fox and there are only two children, John W. Trigg and Lucy Matilda Trigg who married A.B. Hawkins. They both have quite a family. This is the only Trigg family living in Spotsylvania Co. There are a good many in the State of Virginia. I am confident there is no other old Trigg residence in this County, but the place I live in. You ask about the Trigg burying ground. The only Trigg burial ground I know of is on this place and in our garden.

Now in regard to the Brock connections I will send you some old records which will be more satisfactory to you than anything I could write you. I am always willing to throw the light on things that I can. When Mrs. Miller of Albemarle was here she was very anxious to find out who married Polly Trigg, my grandfather's sister and you will see from these old papers I send you that she married William Carter who was a brother to my grandma Trigg. I shall not attempt to write any more of the Brock line as I will send papers that will be more satisfactory to you. Now in regards to the children helping you the three girls are living in Washington D.C. My family consists of only six, so you see there are only three of us at home. My wife and youngest child, a boy of 13 years of age and myself.

Now in conclusion I will send you these old papers with understanding that you, within a reasonable time return them to me safely and in good condition which I think is your reasonable duty. Hoping that you will get them safely and that they may be safely returned. I am very respectfully,
    Your friend,

    J. B. Trigg

P.S. This Catherine Chew Brock whose WILL I send you, owned quite a large landed estate as well as a good many negroes. The old Brock residence is 13 miles from Frederick and on the railroad leading to Orange Court House. John W. Trigg, who is double first cousin of mine lives in the old house which I suppose is 150 years old if not older. There is on this place a large graveyard of Brocks and Carters and my uncle J.W. Trigg and wife are also buried there. At some future time, I will examine the records at the Clerk Office and try and find out what my grandfathers, fathers name was and from who this place was bought from or whether it came out of land grant from the Sovereign of England. The deed from William Trigg and Ann his wife, 13 Jan. 1808 to my grandfather, Thomas Trigg and his wife Matilda Trigg.

NOTE:-JKT. The above William and Ann Hampton Trigg settled in Montgomery Co. TN. In a letter 30 Aug. 1923, to Mr. L.F. White & Sons, Red Oak, TX. from Mrs. J.B. Trigg RFD 1, Chancellor, VA. Box 40. J.B. Trigg died about 1919.

The Pedigree Resource file lists that a Josiah Reynolds was born 1 Jan 1758 in Nansemond County, Virginia. He died in 1833 in Smith County, Tennessee. He is listed as the son of John David Reynolds and Mary Martha Gay. John David Reynolds was born 1 Jan 1727/8 in Guilford County, North Carolina, the son of William Reynolds and Mary Brown. William Reynolds was born 5 Jul 1701 at Nottingham, Pennsylvania. Hence, name and residence patterns indicate that this Reynolds family of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Virginia, is probably not directly related to the Reynolds families of Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania and Brunswick Counties of Virginia.

In Reply to: William Thomas Moorefield/Elizabeth Powell by Pat Greggs of 257

John W. Mo(o)refield is *probably* the son of Wright & Nancy (Stevens) Morefield. Sally Powell is very likely the d/o Joshua Powell, Sr. & Fanny Willingham Powell.

Rationale for claiming Wright as the father of John W.: census data suggests that John W. was born @1786. On the Halifax, VA Personal Property Tax Lists 1782-1832, the only "available" fathers for John W. were John, Sr., John, Jr., Wright & Edward. John, Sr. and John, Jr. both had known sons named John. That leaves Wright & Edward. Wright married Nancy Stevens in 1785; no marriage record has been found for Edward, but he first appeared on the tax lists in 1789. I therefore *speculate* that John W. was born about 1786 and was the son of John W. & Sally.

Rationale for claiming Joshua & Fanny Willingham Powell as the parents of Sally: John & Sally Morefield sued the Joshua Powell estate in 1813, Plea Book 30, p. 222.

In 1850 John W. & Sally were living in Henry Co, TN with their daughters. Living a few households away was Johusa Powell (Jr.), Sally's brother.

William Turner(son of James Turner) married Nancy LeGrand in Halifax Co., VA in 1798. (Nancy was the granddaughter of the Huguenot immigrant Pierre LeGrand of Manakintowne, VA.) They had at least one child, a son James LeGrand Turner, who was born in 1799 in Richmond Co., NC. By 1807 this family was in Maury Co., TN. William and Nancy were both believed to be dead by 1814. James LeGrand Turner married 1st to a Miss Kitchens (no children), and married 2nd to Julina Sessums in TN on Christmas Day, 1824. They had 15 children who were born in TN, AL, and TX. James LeGrand Turner became a Medical Doctor at some point in his life, and he died in Bastrop County, TX in 1870. Did he have siblings? Where did his marriages occur? Did the first wife die in childbirth? Who were Julina Sessums parents? If you can add or subtract anything to/from this please contact me.

I don't know anything about the Alsup family except that James LeGrand Turner's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th children married into that line. That usually indicates that the two families were extraordinarily close--in fact they may have made two or more migrations together. Maybe TN to AL, and it sure looks like they moved from AL/MS to TX together.
I believe that the name Sanford originated from the marriage of James Turner II's sister to a Robert Sanford. I'm pretty sure this couple and their family moved from NC or VA to Maury Co., TN to be near James Turner II and his family.

I have what is undoubtedly the same Harriet LeGrand Turner, b. TN 7 Apr 1830, m. J. Alsup. I didn't have her place of death but I'm sure not surprised that it was in Bastrop Co., TX. Harriet was the fourth child of Dr. James LeGrand Turner b. NC 9 Sep 1799 d. 9 Dec 1870 in Alum Creek, Bastrop Co., TX and his wife Julina Sessums b. 5 Jun 1808 in Raleigh, Wake Co., NC. d. 3 Oct 1876 in Alum Creek, Bastrop Co., TX. (Both are buried in unmarked graves in the Alum Creek Cemetery.) Dr. Turner was reputed to be the first M.D. in Bastrop County. It seems likely that Harriet was born in Lauderdale Co., TN inasmuch as her parents are listed as residents there in the 1830 US Census.
James. L. Turner was the son of William Turner b. 1771 Halifax Co., VA and his wife Nancy LeGrand b. Halifax Co., VA 1771/74. This coupole was married in Halifax Co., VA 4 Oct 1798. I believe this family, along with several relatives, moved to Maury Co., TN about 1808. William died there in 1812/13, and I'm not certain what happened to his wife. The mystery I am trying to solve is whether there were other children besides James LeGrand Turner. I'm certain this couple was alive from the time of James L. 's birth to 1812 and there are no children known to me. Most couples of that day would have had 6 or 8 during that time period of 12 years.
William was the son of James Turner who was born in what was then Orange Co., VA in about 1842. He was the only son of James Turner b. Spotsylvania Co., VA about 1710 and his wife Kerenhappuch. She was born in the same country in about 1716 to Isaac Norman, Jr. and his wife Frances Courtney. Kerenhappuch became a revolutionary war heroine by virtue of her services as a nurse at the battle of Guilford County Courthouse, NC. in 1781. Her son James was Capt. in the Virginia Militia and he was gravely wounded in the battle. A grandson was also wounded. Kerenhappuch nursed them both as well as other soldiers who were wounded.

I had speculated earlier that the John W. & Sarah Moorfield in the 1850 Henry, TN census--with daughters Susan, Sarah, Mary, Elvira and R.F. (Rebecca) (all b. VA)-- matched the John W. & Sally (Powell) Morefield of Halifax. For some reason, I looked at the image of the census record again a few days ago and noticed that there was a Joshua Powell
age 59 in household 55/55, while John W. & Sarah were in household #60/60. I believe that Sally, Nancy (m. Henry Morefield) and Joshua were children of Joshua and Fanny (Willingham) Powell. At MRE2002 we looked at a lawsuit brought by Joshua & Fanny's children against Fanny after Joshua's death. At any rate, I think the fact that Joshua
Powell (Jr.) was living nearby is even more evidence supporting the speculation that the Henry Co. TN family was indeed John W. & Sarah (Powell) Morefield.

Another thing I noticed recently is that Henry County borders Calloway, KY to the south. Graves, KY borders Calloway, KY to the west. Calloway, KY is where Green MFLD settled and Graves, KY is where Robert S. & Prudence (Irby) MFLD settled. Hmmm...

    2930 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/MOREFIELDHOMEPLACE/message/2074

Joshua & Fanny Willingham Powell were the parents of:

Sally Powell, who married John W. Morefield 1810 Halifax, VA, s/o Wright & Nancy (Stevens) Morefield. Fanny Powell signed the consent for Sally to marry John. John & Sally fit an 1850 Henry Co, TN census record. A Joshua Powell, who lived close by, was likely Sally's brother, Joshua (Jr.). Henry Co. borders Stewart, TN and Calloway,
    KY, where Green Morefield lived.

Nancy Powell, who married Henry Morefield 1814 Halifax, VA, s/o Wright & Nancy (Stevens) Morefield. Joshua Powell signed the consent for Nancy to marry Henry. Henry's family was in Stokes, NC in 1830 & 1840 and in Pulaski, KY in 1850. Nancy died before 1850, and Henry married an Elizabth, last name unknown (not the Elizabeth Powell who married William Morefield in Halifax, VA 1836, as some have claimed).

....."After Joshua (Sr.) died (before 1810), Fanny's children sued her in order to force her to carry out the terms of Joshua's will--Halifax VA, Plea Book 29 p. 189, 315. Another daughter of Joshua & Fanny mentioned in that court case was Polly. The rest of you may have already figured this out, but it just occurred to me that the Polly mentioned in the law suit must have been the Mary "Polly" who married James Harding Morefield in 1816. James & Polly's oldest son was named Joshua. Well, duh... James & Polly were in Rowan, NC in 1830, in Clark, IN in 1840 and in St. Clair, IL in 1850. They also named a daughter Frances, so maybe there were no lasting bad feelings toward
    Polly's mother."

Marshall, KY borders Calloway, KY, which borders Henry, TN.

Green's parents have not been established. His connection to Halifax is indirect--as far as I know, we have found no record that ties him to Halifax. However, there are strong indications that he was closely related to Martin, Julius and Johnson, all of whom are tied directly to Halifax.

Note that there was another female b. 1810/1815 in John W.'s household in 1830. I don't find a marriage record that would account for her.

Waddill Carter-4, died about 1782 in Prince Edward County. He married Mildred Wade and had a daughter, Nancy Carter-5, who married John Bissequ in 1786. Her marriage bond mentioned that her father was deceased. His will was executed April 6, 1782, and probated in July, 1782. His other children were James Carter-5, Theodorick Carter-5, John Carter-5, and at least two other daughters.

THEODORICK JR -3 married about the time his father died, somewhere around 1736 or 1737. John Carter-3 is mentioned in the will of their father to receive several basic household articles that were not given to THEODORICK-3 who appears to be the older of the two men, and was probably already married at the time the will was written. THEODORICK-3 received almost twice as much land as John-3 did, however, again reinforcing our belief that he is the older of the two. THEODORICK-3 married a woman named ANN, who is apparently the daughter of WILLIAM WADDILL. Her birth is recorded in the parish register as ?Ann Waddill, the daughter of William Waddill christened 24 January 1713? and recorded in New Kent. Since we know that THEODORICK CARTER-3 was born prior to 1706 we can see that ANN WADDILL was a few years younger than he was.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this seventh day of December in the year of Christ one thousand seven hundred and seventy seven.

    Theo?d Carter [seal]

Witnesses: William Waddill, Elizabeth Clarke, and Agnes Watkins.

Agnes Watkins, the witness to this will, was the wife of Francis Watkins, one of the executors of the will. Thomas Watkins [possibly the father of Francis] had witnessed the will of THEODORICK-3?s father. Thus, more circumstantial proof that we have the right Theodorick Carter. The William Waddill who witnessed the will was probably not ANN?s father by that name, but most likely was her brother, nephew, or cousin. The will was probated January 19, 1778, in Prince Edward County. Francis Watkins, the executor of the will, was apparently a close friend or relation to the CARTER family. John Carter-4, the son of THEODORICK-3 named a son ?Francis Watkins Carter-5? and WILLIAM-4 also named a son ?Francis-5.? That Christian name has continued as an ?heirloom? name in this line of CARTERS ever since. This reinforces the supposition that ?our? WILLIAM is ?that William Carter.? Agnes Watkins?s sister was married to Nathaniel Venable, the co-executor.

The mention of the Negro slave, Dick, who had been inherited as a lad from THEODORICK CARTER-2 in his will is another piece of evidence that we have the correct Theodorick Carter.

The older children, Susannah-4, John-4, Theodorick-4, and WILLIAM CARTER-4 had apparently already been given their shares of the estate prior to the death of their father, THEODORICK-3, so they received only token bequests.

    From Joyce Hetricks book

    William Carter-4

    Giles Carter-1; Theodorick-2; Theodorick-3; William-4; Joseph-5; Elizabeth-6

WILLIAM CARTER-4 was born and grew up in Prince Edward County, Virginia. We aren?t sure of the date of his marriage, but it was at least before 1760, since his first son, William Carter, Jr.-5, was born July 9, 1760 [per William-5?s Revolutionary pension]. By the time of THEODORICK-3?s death, WILLIAM-4 had apparently moved and settled in Halifax County, North Carolina.

In trying to decide just which ?William ? was ours, several things had to be taken into consideration. The family was very particular about continuing the ?heirloom ? names that were passed from generation to generation. The Christian name ?Francis? for males seems to date from the friendship/kinship? of THEODORICK-3 and Francis Watkins. Two of THEODORICK-3?s sons named their sons Francis. That heirloom name seems to be found only in our line of Carters. While family heirloom names are not always ?evidence,? in many cases, it can be almost a preponderance of evidence it itself. Fortunately, for us, this is one of those cases where it carries great weight. Fortunately, also, it is not the only evidence.

The Revolutionary pension record and family Bible record of William Carter, Jr.-5, the brother of our JOSEPH-5, shows that he was born July 9, 1760 in Halifax County, North Carolina, and lived there until 1802, when he moved to Warren County, North Carolina. In March of 1804, he moved to Smith County, Tennessee. This information solidifies our connection to the WILLIAM-4 whose will we have. William-5 also says in his pension that his brother, Francis-5, saw his discharge papers in his father?s trunk a few years before their father?s death in 1810, but thought they were of little value and destroyed them. Francis Carter-5 was executor of the estate of the father, WILLIAM CARTER. [Revolutionary Pension of William Carter.]

Theda Womack did the initial research on the CARTERS. She found WILLIAM-4?s will and it mentioned his children and wife, DEANITA. We assume that DEANITA is the mother of the children, but we have no proof that she is.

    Children of William Carter-4

William Carter, Jr.-5, was born July 9, 1760. He was apparently the oldest son. William, Jr., was a Revolutionary veteran and received a pension which contains quite a bit of information about the family and is helpful to researchers. He married his wife, Martha, January 11, 1778. He died about 1840 in Smith County, Tennessee. [Revolutionary pension and Bible records.]

JOSEPH CARTER-5, was born May 7, 1766, probably in Halifax, North Carolina. He died June 14, 1839, in Sumner County, Tennessee. He and several of his siblings moved over to Caswell County, North Carolina, prior to 1790. There he married ANN MALLORY that year in a double ceremony with Stephen Mallory and Stephen?s bride on December 19, 1790. ANN, who was born July 15, 1761, appears to be the sister of Stephen Mallory and the daughter of JOHN MALLORY, Sr., of Caswell County. We are not sure of her birthplace, possibly North Carolina, and possibly Virginia. It is interesting to note, however, that ANN was not only five years older than JOSEPH, but was age 29 when they married. This was quite old, even ?elderly,? for a woman to marry in that era. Especially a woman of some family substance. [Will of Joseph Carter, Sumner County, TN; marriage records Caswell Co., NC.]

Theodorick Carter-5, born about 1773, also moved to Caswell County and married Dianah Mallory, another daughter of JOHN MALLORY on April 16, 1793. He died about 1835. [Marriage Records Caswell Co., NC.]

Francis Carter-5, was born about 1770 and married Sally Newel on May 2, 1800, in Warren County, North Carolina. He died after 1810. His name is the heirloom name that helps trace the family. He had a son named William Carter-6.

Mary Carter-5, born sometimes after 1760, married John Sawyer in 1799 in Caswell County, North Carolina, and died after 1810. [Will of William Carter, Halifax Co., NC.]

Lucy Carter-5, married a man named Pike and died after 1810. [Will of William Carter, Halifax Co., NC.]

Nancy Carter-5, married a man named Boston, died after 1810.

[Will of William Carter, Halifax Co., NC.]

Martha Carter-5, married John Baker, died after 1810. [Will of William Carter, Halifax Co., NC.]

This list of WILLIAM-4?s children was taken from his will. Several grandchildren were also listed for bequests and that may indicate that there were some deceased children not mentioned in the will, but whose children were listed for bequests.

By 1775, Virginia had about 550,000 people in 61 counties. Patrick Henry?s ?give me liberty or give me death? speech had fired up the rebels. The Revolutionary Government was evolving. Lord Dunamore had infuriated the people by taking the gunpowder out of the public storage, and therefore getting it out of the people?s hands. Patrick Henry married Dorthea Dandridge, the daughter of the spendthrift, Nathaniel West Dandridge. Dorthea and he inherited considerable land and slaves from her father. Many of the men who so ardently fought for ?liberty? themselves held slaves, and apparently saw no conflict of interest in their opinions.

Apparently the CARTER family?s sympathies were with the rebels during the Revolution, true to the feelings of the 100-years-dead James Crewes and GILES CARTER-1. William Carter, Jr., was a Revolutionary soldier.

WILLIAM CARTER-4, continued to reside in Halifax County, North Carolina, until his death in 1810. His will is of record there in Book 3, page 500, #768, dated March 17, 1810, and probated May Court 1810. JOSEPH had been gone from Halifax at least 20 years when his father died.

Lend wife, Deanita Carter negroes, etc. For her widowhood or life and at her decease to go to: William Carter, Theoderick Carter, Joseph Carter, and Francis Carter. Lend wife land whereon Francis Coley now lives Joining William Pike and Wood J. Hamlin containing 50 acres. Daughter Mary Sawyer negroes, and at her death the said negroes to go to her children [names not given] Daughters Martha Baker, Nancy Boston, and Lucy Pike negroes to each. Son Francis Carter land whereon he now lives which was bought of Mark Rickman and Nathan Rickman. Grandson William Carter son of Francis, Granddaughter Louisa Jones Carter, and Thornton Mallard son of John Mallard dec?d one colt. Witness Wood J. Hamlin, Jesse Carter, Benjamin Carter [all made marks] exects. Francis Carter and Wood Jones Hamlin.

A man named Jesse Carter was another resident of Caswell County, North Carolina, whose name is frequently seen on deeds and wills. No connection has been made between this man and our WILLIAM-4. He is most likely not the same man as the above-mentioned Jesse, who signed WILLIAM?s will as a witness.

The mention of ?Thornton Mallard, son of John Mallard? receiving a colt raises the question??is the name ?Mallard? a misspelling of the name ?Mallory?? Who were Thornton Mallard and John Mallard? This might be an area for more research.

?Granddaughter Louisa Jones Carter,? and ?Wood Jones Hamlin? both being mentioned in WILLIAM?s will would indicate some form of kinship.
