Turner Carter, s/o Lemuel and Patsy Powell Carter, married Martha R. Kirby in Halifax County, Virginia 6 August 1849; they are shown in the 1850 Halifax County, Southern District Census living in the household of Martha's mother, who appears to be a widow with young children. Turner is shown as 'overseer'. There is one infant child who may be their son, or Martha's brother.
