Genealogy of the Judson Family in Oregon
Compiled by Lewis Edward Judson--1961
Genealogy of the Judson Family in earliest Oregon as copied by
Lewis H. Judson in 1874, from the family Bible which was brought by
his ancesters from Old England.
William Judson and his wife Grace and their sons Joseph, Jeremiah, and
Joshua, emigrated from the North Riding of Yorkshire in Old England to the
Massachusettes Colony, in 1634. After residing four years at Concord in
the Colony of Massachusetts, they with twelve other families, finding that
they had not found the liberty which they desired, chartered a small vessel
and sailed around Cape Cod and down the Massachusettes, Rhode Island and
Connecticut coasts, landing at the mouth of the Housatonic River, where
they founded the town of Stratford, in the Colony of Connecticut. | Judson, William (I4145)

George and Elizabeth left Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina in 1807 and settled in Indiana Territory and with their older sons, John Jacob, George Jr., and Andrew M., they build Becks Mill south of Salem, Washington County, Indiana. The old mill, rebuilt in 1864, still stands at the mill stream near Becks Hill, and was the first grist mill in the 30-50 mile area. This is still printed on some maps and atlases. -JNT email 04.October.1998 at 14:48.

George Reynolds' father, James, is commonly thought to be from Pennsylvania. It is probable that he and other members of the family came to Va and lingered awhile in Orange County, Va about the year of 1754, as there appears a record of a lease of land to Richard Reynolds from John Spottswood during the lives of Richard Spencer and George Reynolds. We have no verification of this George being our ancestor, but we find the names of Richard and Spencer in the census 1782-85 of Pittsylvania County, VA and our ancestor, George Reynolds, living and marrying in the same community in 1779. In 1809 or about that time, George moved to Williamson County, Tennessee and we find a Richard and a Spencer Reynolds also residents of the same county, indicating that their relationships influenced them to make their homes in the same localities.
In the ninth annual report of the Va State Library, we find the following record: "George Reynolds, 1st Lieutenant, commissioned August 1780, by court, under P. Hairston, from Henry Va., Caroline County." We feel justified in believing that this is our ancestor, the Caroline County being the only confusing factor that raises any doubt. George Reynolds, of our line, was a resident of Henry County, Va., at the time and P Hairston was also living in Henry, or just across the line in Pittsylvania County, and so far as is possible to ascertain, there is no Henry in Caroline County, Va., The records at Bowling Green, the County seat of Caroline, were destroyed, making it impossible to verify the fact. About 1809, George Reynolds moved to Williamson Co., Tn. Two of his daughters, Elizabeth and Susanna have married Richard and James Hughes, and I take it that these families and the Pryors, Stones, Perkins and others, went at the same time. Our ancestor died in Williamson County, TN, about 1813. | Reynolds, Capt. George (I8209)

His second wife, Sallie Fanny Green is likely the sister of his first wife. In 1924 she inherits money from her uncle, John King Gravitt and the 4 children of Geo. T. Carter and Sue Green are listed as heirs in this will, as well. By 1930 George T. Carter is listed as widower on the census. | Green, Martha Sue (I7279)

GEORGE WASHINGTON3 ARNN SR (Abraham2 Aron Sr, Jacob1 Aaron) was born in 1772 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. He died on 11 Jul 1855 in Henry, Tennessee. He married SARAH WALKER on 10 Dec 1797 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, daughter of Elisha Walker and Judith Kirby. She was born in 1783 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. She died on 21 Jun 1849 in Henry, Tennessee. Notes for George Washington Arnn Sr: from LA: Identified in land tax records 1805 as "George W. Aron". According to Mrs. McRee of MI, a descendent, her great grandfather was named George Washington Aron and Mary Arnn who married George Sr's son Henry was his mother. No doubt the latter George Washington Aron was named after his grandfather. HP/RAC identifies him as George M. Aaron
Deed dated 17 Jul 1797 - purchased 164 acres on Sandy River from Henry and Elizabeth Warren for 24 pounds. Listed in the land tax records with this acreage until 20 Oct 1800 when he buys 120 acres from Abraham Aaron, Jr. for $100. This land was located on Turkey Cock Creek. [DB 12, p. 212, Chatham - LA, p. 36, ref 29] Deed recorded 14 May 1807 - bought 100 acres from Abraham Sr. This was part of a 220 acre plot surveyed 9 Apr 1801. Land located on branches of Sandy River and Turkey Cock Creek - paid his father 30 shillings. By 1829 he had extensive holdings [see LA, p. 34]; sold all remaining land in 1829. George left Virginia and moved to Henry County Tennessee about 1830. An inventory of his property is under the name of George Arun. HP/RAC lists him as George M. Aaron, Sr. Please contact me at jknight@boone.net for further information.
Notes for Sarah Walker:
LA: "George married Sarah Walker 10 Dec 1797. She was the daughter of Elisha Walker and sister to Isaac Arnn's first Wife, Polly. Sarah was a little younger than George; the 1820 census listing him as '45 years and afterward'. The 1820 census of Pittsylvania County, Virginia lists 'one
free white female between 26-45'. This is most likely Sarah...Sarah probably went by the nickname Sally...A note in a son's [Abihu] Bible stated her death..." LA mentions a letter from George and Sally Arnn living in Henry County, Tennessee to their sons Henry and George and others back in Virginia. This would indicate that spelling of the name was
Arnn bef 1849.
George Washington Arnn Sr and Sarah Walker had the following children:
i. HENRY CLAY4 ARNN was born in 1799 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, He died about 1858 in Henry, Tennessee. He married (1) MARY ANN ROBERTSON on 26 Nov 1825 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. She was born in 1800 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. She died in Henry, Tennessee. He married (2) NANCY MARTIN in 1821.
ii. JOHN ARNN was born about 1803 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, USA. He died in 1830 (died from gunshot).
Notes for John Arnn:
Per LA - "In the letter ...March 1830 Sally or Sarah [her real name] mentions a boy John who was killed and another boy William and a child Kit." It is assumed that they were also children. No other record has been found of William or Kit.
iii. GEORGE WASHINGTON ARNN JR. was born in 1805 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. He died in 1880 in Henry, Tennessee, USA. He married (1) LOUISA V. LANKFORD on 08 Sep 1857 in Henry, Tennessee, USA. She was born in 1832 in
North Carolina. She died in 1921 in Tennessee. He married (2) CHARLOTTE LEWRY on 11 Jan 1848 in Tennessee. She was born in 1810 in North Carolina. She died in 1859 in Tennessee, USA. He married (3) A. FRANCES DONALDSON.
iv. ANADAB ARNN was born in 1807 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. He died about 1869 in Webster, Missouri, USA. He married ELLEN ELANOR ALEXANDER on 11 Jan 1832 in Henry, Tennessee, daughter of James Alexander and Hester Sidwell. She was born in 1814 in Kentucky, USA. She died in 1870 in Webster, Missouri.
v. ABIHU ARNN22, was born on 23 Sep 1807 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. He died on 24 Feb 1893 in Conway, Arkansas. He married MARGARET REYNOLDS BLAIR on 26 Oct 1829 in Pittsylvania, Virginia, daughter of Samuel Brittain Blair Sr. and Mary Reynolds. She was born on 24 Apr 1811 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. She died on 07 Nov 1876 in Independence, Arkansas.
vi. ANN ARNN was born about 1811 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. She married JOHN WALKER. He was born about 1806.
vii. JUDITH ARNN was born about 1813 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. She married WILLIAM M. FRAZIER on 18 Sep 1839 in Henry, Tennessee. He was born about 1808.
Notes for Judith Arnn: Surname as spelled on CD2 is Arnn
viii. FRANCES FANNIE ARNN was born about 1817 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. She married JOHN I. CRAWFORD. He was born about 1812.
ix. WILLIAM ARNN was born about 1819 in Pittsylvania, Virginia.
x. KIT ARNN was born about 1821 in Pittsylvania, Virginia.
xi. JAMES MADISON ARNN was born in 1825 in Pittsylvania, Virginia. He died on 03 Nov 1859 in Greene, Missouri. He married AMANDA F. BOND on 29 Dec 1848 in Henry, Tennessee. She was born in 1832 in Tennessee. She died in 1903 in Greene, Missouri. | Arnn, George Washington Sr. (I9229)

Giles Carter's Wife, Hannah, b. 1652, VA
Posted by: Shawn Potter Date: July 08, 2000 at 17:30:56 of 17434 on Carter GenForum
I invite any and all to review and comment on my conclusions concerning the identity of Hannah (born about 1652), the wife of Giles Carter of Turkey Island, Henrico County, Virginia. Hannah married Giles in about 1670; and their children were: Theodorick (born about 1672), Susannah (born about 1674), Mary (born about 1676), Ann (born about 1678), and Giles Jr. (born after September 14, 1681).
__________________
My Conclusions:
Although no official record has been found which explicitly identifies Hannah's parents, circumstances indicate she was a daughter of James Crews and an unidentified Native American woman. This conclusion is supported by the following:
1. James Crews devoted most of his will to the family of Giles and Hannah Carter, naming and providing for each family member separately. Although he did not state his relationship to the Carters, he provided for them in a manner traditionally reserved for children and grandchildren. Later, when the Carters sold land inherited from James Crews, they both signed a deed which states that James Crews gave the land to "Giles and Hannah Carter." (*** Further details above) This additional information, that James Crews gave the land to Hannah as well as to Giles, considered in the context of an era of limited female property rights, highlights Hannah as the likely child of James Crews. James Crews' reluctance to clearly state that Hannah was his daughter, indicates an unusual aspect to their relationship--which is better understood in light of additional information.
2. James Crews may have married Margaret Llewellyn after August 10, 1654, when Margaret witnessed a deed signing her maiden name, and before February 6, 1664, when Margaret's father wrote his will, leaving his daughter, "Margaret Cruse," and "her husband" money to buy memorial rings. If so, Margaret must have died before James wrote his will on July 23, 1676.
3. The attorney for the executor of James Crews' estate testified that James Crews "left no widow or lawful child." The attorney's inclusion of the word "lawful" implies that James Crews left an "unlawful" child--one who was born outside of wedlock. This, in part, explains why James Crews was reluctant to clearly state in his will that Hannah was his daughter. The other part of the explanation comes from general information about white/non-white relations in Colonial Virginia as well as specific information about James Crews' associations.
4. The social consequences in Colonial Virginia for a white man having a child outside of wedlock depended upon the mother's heritage. Fines and corporal punishment for free white men and white women--whether servant or free, who had a child together outside of wedlock were clearly defined and strictly enforced. In contrast, fines and punishment for free white men and non-white women, who had a child together outside of wedlock were practically non-existent. So, since Hannah probably was a daughter of James Crews, who was born outside of wedlock, yet no court records document the conviction and punishment of James Crews and Hannah's mother for such a transgression, Hannah's mother probably was non-white.
5. Since James Crews willed a "negro maid" to Hannah, it is unlikely that Hannah's mother was African American.
6. Since James Crews "kept an Indian," Hannah's mother could have been Native American. With other alternatives eliminated, this mere possibility becomes a virtual certainty.
7. In summary, circumstances indicate that:
(a) Hannah's father probably was James Crews (from his will and the Carter's deed), and
(b) James Crews may have married Margaret Llewellyn (from Daniel Llewellyn's will), and
(c) Hannah probably was born out of wedlock (from the attorney's testimony that James Crews left no "lawful" child), and
(d) Hannah's mother probably was non-white (from strict Virginia statutes and enforcement yet no conviction and punishment), and
(e) Hannah's mother probably was not African American (from James Crews' gift to Hannah of a "negro maid"), and
(f) Hannah's mother could have been Native American (from James Crews' permit to "keep an Indian").
Taken as a whole, these circumstances indicate that Hannah's parents were James Crews and an unidentified Native American woman. | Crews, Hannah (I13959)
