This manuscript does not cite any sources and is known to contain errors. The most glaring error is the statement of ARW military service for Nathaniel Judson of Connecticut. Pension records for Nataniel Judson show a different wife and children for the person with this name and military service.
The Nathaniel Judson who is the grandfather of Lewis Hubbell Judson was married to Rhoda Hall and died in 1815, so he could not have applied for an ARW pension. | Source (S04075)

This was my first Family Archive CD-ROM purchase and for what it cost, a great disappointment. It contains the names of bride and groom along with marriage date or marriage bond date. The marriages are organized by state and county. The search engine is useful after you figure out how to apply the wildcard characters. However, that is it.
This CD-ROM is more of a list rather than an index. An index contains a reference to where the listed item can be found; telling me the county where a marriage was recorded is not much of a reference (I knew that much, otherwise why would I buy this particular CD-ROM). I was at least expecting the name of the record in which the marriage was recorded. I had hoped to see page or file numbers as well. There is not any indication whether the date is for the marriage or the bond date or whether it is the date it was recorded; the single date shown could be any of these.
I found a few marriages which might be hints to missing branches, but for the most part, I already knew most of the marriages and this reference cannot be considered proof of my information. In addition, many marriages that I would have expected to find, were not there. I would find a marriage of one sibling listed, but marriages of other siblings about the same time were not listed.
There is no way to sort the list; chronologically, by name, or otherwise. The search results do not display together. The list simply jumps to the next marriage in the full list that matches the search criteria. You have to do a search twice for any given surname, once for the groom and once for the bride. I have found most personal genealogy web sites to be more useful than this CD-ROM. At least with a web site, I usually have some frame of reference in which to make a judgement about future research into the information I find. | Source (S67456)

Settling in the British North American Colonies
From Benjamin Franklin, who wrote in 1751: ?So vast is the Territory of North America that it will require many Ages to settle it fully and, till it is fully settled, Labour will never be cheap here, where no Man continues long a Labourer for others, but gets a Plantation of his own?.
In the 1700s the British colonies in America grew rapidly in population and wealth. A former, somewhat crude, society acquired an elite that was somewhat polished and numerous. Trade and cities flourished. The 250,000 settlers who had lived in the newly formed mainland colonies in 1700, became 1,500,000 by 1750 and 2,250,000 by 1775, only 25 years later.
Perhaps it is difficult to comprehend the times and events occurring in the very middle of the 18th century. George II was king of England, Scotland & Ireland, and was Hanoverian (German) in origin. In Europe, the waltz was becoming its most popular dance, and the first golf club, in Edinburgh, Scotland, was just 6 years old. In the colonies, the 5 major centers of affluence were Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Charleston, and Newport. The elite wore wigs, and slavery was an important part of the economy. The city of Richmond, Virginia was started in 1737, while Charlotte, North Carolina was just being settled in 1750. Benjamin Franklin was working on his lightning conductor. The Ohio River and Tennessee were just beginning to be explored. The beginnings of the American Revolution, the conflict where the colonists won their independence from Great Britain, were still 13 years away. George Washington was 18 years old, and Thomas Jefferson -- seven. The birth of the United States of America was 26 years away.
Note: Goochland was formed from Henrico in 1728 and Cumberland was formed from southern portion of Goochland in 1749.
Thomas's Will names Robert as his oldest son and Thomas as his second.

Thomas may have served as a private in Capt. John Sawtell's Co. of Col James Prescott's Regiment, when it marched on the alarm of 19 Apr 1775 from Groton and Pepperell. A service of 20 1/2 days for a Thomas White of Groton is recorded in MA Soldiers and Sailors of the Rev. War. Thomas, Jr. would have been in Groton at the time, as a child was born there in 1777. Thomas must have moved soon after to VT and perhaps to Cheshire County, NH. There is a record of a Thomas and Ruth White buying land in Mount Holly, VT where Asa had settled. He was from Hartland, VT (as was Asa and Francis). There is a Thomas WHite on the 1790 census of Heartland, VT as well as Asa and Francis also. They may have all moved there after the Rev. War. His brothers, Francis and Asa, were at the Battle of Bunker Hill according to Coat Records (each man was to be issued a coat, preferrably from his home town, mandated by the MA Legislature). These records are in the MA State Archives. It is probable that Thomas, Jr. served briefly also, but he was married and had 2 children by then. | White, Thomas Jr. (I5089)

Thomas was named as one of the surveyors of highways in the Acton town meeting of 7 Mar 1748. This was shortly after he received some of his father's land, as only landholders could vote and hold office. Thomas obtained a Retailer's licence for 1748-1750 from the Middlesex County, MA Court of Sessions, for Acton. He sold his land in Acton to Daniel Locke of Cambridge for L253 and moved to Groton at the end of 1750 , after his first son, Thomas Jr., was born. On the land records in Middlesex County, Thomas White of Acton is listed as being a cooper. Apparantly Thomas became an innkeeper when he moved to Groton. There are records in the Middlesex Court of Sessions that show Thomas applied for and received a license to be an innkeeper in 1753-1763. The Land Records show him selling land in Groton on 6 Jan 1763 when he sold 100 acres that he owned on the west side of Snake Hill Road to John Frost, Jr. in South Groton, and on 28 Sep 1767 when he sold 107 acres in Groton near the Commons to a merchant from NYC. These records list him as being a cooper again rather than an innkeeper. When Hannah died in May 1780, she is listed as being the wife of Thomas, not his widow, which probably means he was still alive at the time. Exactly when he died remains unknown.
Thomas was born 3 years after his parents moved to Concord. They were living with Elizabeth's widowed Aunt Mercy HETT Butterick. Her husband was William Butterick. The Buttericks had land near the North Bridge on the Concord River, where the first Battle of the Revolutionary War took place between the Minutemen and the British on 19 Apr 1775. The headquarters for the Battlefield National Park is in a later Buttrick home, and Thomas was probably born in a house nearby.
So far no record of where Thomas died and when has been located in the Groton, MA area. There is no record of him in VT where his sons, Asa and Francis, moved by 1790. It is possible that he went to live with one of his daughters and her husband if he outlived his wife, Hannah, who died in 1780. But there is no record of his death or burial in the Westmoreland, NH cemetary records where Ammi and Hannah are buried. Records of his daughter's, Molly's and Mehitable's marriages do not seem to be recorded at Groton, though a Mehitable (Hetty) White married in Westford, MA in 1794. Westford is near Groton. Hannah married John Farnsworth, and they moved to Westmoreland, Cheshire County, NH., as did Hannah's brothers, Thomas Jr, and Ammi. A mention of Thomas being alive in Groton is in a land record where he appeared before a J.P. in Cambridge on 18 Oct 1772 to acknowledge the land deed for the 100 acres that he sold in Groton in 1763. He also sued Nathan Smith of Wesford in April 1780 and the case is in the Superior Court Records that he recovered damages. That is the last record of Thomas White of Groton that has been found so far. There is a Thomas White who married a Mary Buttrick in Concord, MA in 1785; but it has not been determined if this was the same Thomas White as the one from Groton. | White, Thomas (I5157)

Notes for THOMAS EGLETON:
Bible Records: Thomas Egleton and Mary his wife arrived in James River Virginia on April 16, 1741
According to a manuscript genealogy written in 1902 by Abner Dennis Stultz, Nancy was a sister of Thomas Eggleton of Henry County. While there is no recorded proof, this tradition seems reliable. That would make her a daughter of Thomas (died 1775) and Nancy (Watson) Egleton of Petersburg, whose son Thomas (1764-1845) moved to Henry County.

Mr. Fisk,
Good to hear from you. I am a little confused though was your Wi lliam Bean Owens born in 1861 or died in 1861. The birth date o f his mother has thrown me off a bit. (These days it dosen't tak e much, I'd have to admit ha!)I have a William Bean "Dick" Owen s b. 1804 in Ga. My info says he and his wife Martha Ann Priest/ Pierce? came with the Beans to Itawamba County MS then moved o n to Tishomingo Co MS.where he was a sheriff in 1840. I know thi s doesn't fit your info but I am sure there are not that many Wi lliam Bean Owens. I will keep looking thru my info and get bac k in touch with you.
