4151 Oliver T. is 8 years old on the 1860 Census; Heritage Quest Pittsylvania County; Museville Series: M653 Roll: 1370 Page: 192; brother William N. is one year old. Jefferson, William N. (I12302)

4152 Olivia was already a 7th generation descendant of Nicholas Patch who came from South Pertherton, England to Beverley, MA about 1630. Her mother was Philomela Lawrence and her 4th great-grandfather was John Lawrence, one of the original settlers of Groton, MA. The Lawrence line has been traced back to Sir Robert Lawrence of Ashton, Lancastershire, England, who was companion-in-arms to Richard the Lion Hearted during one of the Crusades. He was made a knight in 1191 for his bravery in scaling the walls of Acre. Many of Olivia's ancestors were among the earliest settlers of Groton, Chelmsford, Watertown, Rowley, Littleton, Andover and Haverhill, MA. Her father's mother, Mary Hazen, was the great, great, great grandaughter of John Nutting, who was killed in the Indian raid of 1667 at Groton, MA. He was one of the original settlers of Groton. The Hazens were early settlers of Rowley. The Lawrences were among the earliest settlers of Watertown before Groton. The Nuttings were early settlers of Chelmsford and then Groton. Some of their wives came from families of the earliest settlers of surrounding towns.
Olivia married Nathan Cate after Darwin's death, and received a Civil War Pension to support Darwin's 5 children until each was 18 years old. They continued to live in Auroraville, WI and both are buried in Pine Grove Cem, 1 mi NW of Auroraville.
Her birth record has not been found,.Her three brothers were all born at Groton, MA in 1808, 1810 and 1816; and her two sisters were born in Tyngsborough, MA in 1812 and 1814 according to the Groton Vital Records. The Edmund Patch family was in Wallingford, Rutland County, VT in 1820 and in Mount Holly by 1830.

4156 On July 5, 1871 Catherine married Larkin Grinstead, 12 years her senior. At the outbreak of the war Grinstead was a resident of neighboring Person County . He enlisted in Co. D., 13th N.C. Infantry on July 30, 1861 and remained as a private in that unit until it surrendered as part of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. By coincidence, this is the same regiment in which Franklin Summers Phillips’ future father-in-law, Pleasant Johnson Scott also served. However P.J. Scott was in Co. A, the Caswell Company of the 13th. The 1880 census found Catherine (then 35) and Larkin Grinstead (then 47) residing in Danville (First Ward) where his occupation is listed as a tobacconist. By 1900 Catherine was once again a widow and living next to her older brother Henry E. Powell and his family in Dan River Township in Caswell County. My Aunt Lessie Phillips (1894-1990) recalled, as a child, a visit from "Miss Mary Catherine" who rode to their house on horseback. She last appears on the 1910 census as 65 year old Mary C. Grinstead back in Danville ( Third Ward) as a lodger in a house with two other elderly widowed ladies who, like her, never had children. She died August 6, 1917 in Caswell Co. and is buried in a "F. (family) Grave Yard".

4157 On November 14, 1883 when Daddy was nearly 22 and Mother was sixteen, they were married at her home, "The Elms" near what is now Renan. Mother's family had moved from the Greenpond-Hollywood neighborhood to Renan in 1882. The first year of their marriage, Daddy and Mother lived with his mother, Betsy Blair Reynolds, and farmed with her. The next year, they moved to the land Grandfather Brumfield had given them at Renan. The home they built was located below what later became the highway. Mother had wanted to be on high ground, however, the house was placed just a few yards from one of the best springs anywhere around and, in the days when water was brought in by bucketsful and a springhouse was the only means of cooling food, having a spring nearby was a real asset.

4179 Our farm was not large--100 acres given to Daddy and Mother by Grandmother and Grandfather Brumfield and about 100 acres added by Daddy and Mother. The crops were somewhat varied on our farm; tobacco, (the money crop), wheat, corn, hay, beans, and perhaps some oats. We had fruit trees: apples, peaches, plums, cherries, carrots, and one apricot. And there were strawberries and grapevines. Of course we had a garden. Daddy raised enough hogs for his family's use. Mother's aim each year was to get 300 baby chicks (hatched on the farm) for home use. We had fried chicken often. Most times Mother would dress six or more chickens for our Sunday dinners. We had a few turkeys, but not many. There were about four horses to work the farm and ride. In addition, we had milk cows and beef cows enough for home consumption. Sometimes in the winter Daddy would kill a beef, keep what his family could use (no refrigeration then) and give or sell the rest to the neighbors. We had plenty of food to feed our big family and to share with visitors. And Visitors we had.
