    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    pg. 50 ff:
As previously stated, the will of John Carter, of
Halifax County, amongst other provisions, devised
to his three sons, Richard, Robert and Theodrick,
four hundred and fifty acres of land purchased from
George Ridley. The records of Halifax County, Vir-
ginia, show that Robert Carter sold his share of the
    land to George Marable.

The court records of Halifax County show that
Robert Carter was married to Unity Cook, by Wil-
    liam P. Martin, November 1st, 1792.

The last business transaction recorded by Robert
Carter, in Halifax County, Virginia, prior to his re-
moval to Tennessee, was the sale of two negroes to
William Ferrell on June 19th, 1801. This closes the
record, in direct line, of the branch of the family
herein traced, in Virginia, as Robert Carter moved
with his family to Tennessee about 1805, there being,
at that time, six children, Sarah Venable, Henry
Cook, John Blackgrove, Robert Michaux, Polly and
Samuel Jefferson Carter, all of whom, according to

SAMUEL JEFFERSON CARTER BORN HALIFAX COUNTY, VIRGINIA 3 JANUARY, 1803

DIRECT LINE OF DESCENT pg. 51

the family Bible, were born in Halifax County, Vir-
ginia. Another son, Alexander Cunningham Carter,
was born in Tennessee. Two other children, Mary
and Nancy, did not survive infancy.

Robert Carter continued to reside at Franklin,
Tennessee, until his death, September 9th, 1839, in
his 69th year. His will was burned while in the pos-
session of one of his grandchildren, at Nashville, Ten-
nessee. A list of personal property, in his possession
at his death, is recorded at Franklin, Williamson
    County, Tennessee.

Samuel Jefferson Carter, son of Robert and Unity
Cook Carter, was born in Halifax County, Virginia,
January 3d, 1803, and died suddenly at Carter's
Landing, West Tennessee, March 31st, 1873, leaving

    pg. 52

no will. He married, as shown by the family Bible,
first Eliza Staggs, and had three children: Watson
M., Jordan B., and Eliza S. Samuel Jefferson Car-
ter married second Anne Vaulx, and had fourteen
children: Warren, Hays, Watkins Leigh, Charles
Vaulx, Samuel J., Laura O., Irene M., Samuel Jeffer-
son, William Giles Harding, Anne Catharine, Frank
Cook, Ella Watson, Vaulx, Mary Hays.

Samuel Jefferson Carter resided with his family in
Davidson County, near Nashville, Tennessee, prior to
1861, and in Nashville during the Civil War. At the
time of his death he was residing on his farm in West
Tennessee, near Carter's Landing, on the Mississippi
    River.

William Giles Harding Carter, son of Samuel Jef-
ferson and Anne Vaulx Carter, at present the oldest
living representative, in the direct line, bearing the
name of Carter, was born near Nashville, Tennessee,
    November 19th, 1851.

    etc.etc.etc.

William Giles Harding Carter was married, Octo-
ber 27th, 1880, at San Francisco, California, to Ida
Dawley. Two sons have been born of this marriage,
William Vaulx Carter (who was graduated from
West Point in 1904 and appointed a lieutenant in the
Sixth United States Cavalry, his father's old regi-
ment), and Leigh Hays Carter, who, while a student
at the University of Illinois, was accidentally killed

    DIRECT LINE OF DESCENT 53

by an electric shock in one of the University build-
    ings, August 27th, 1907.

Of the eleven sons of Samuel Jefferson Carter, the
first eight are deceased without male issue. General
William H. Carter has one son, William Vaulx Car-
ter, and Frank Cook Carter has one son, William
Dawley Carter. These two young men, William
Vaulx Carter and William Dawley Carter, are all of
their generation bearing the name of Carter, in the
direct line traced in this memoir.
    Carter, Robert (I13942)

4008 Name: Theodrick CARTER II Birth: ABT 1697 Henrico Co VA
Death: 1777/1778 Prince Edward Co., VA

Per all of the following, Theo instant had to remove from Henrico County - but the question remains if he removed again - or - had initailly settled in that area that became Prince Edward - OR - is this his cousin Theo, of Giles Carter Jr.?

LaVere Peters' effort to identify children of Giles II (from below):
"Probably Theodrick - Giles deeded to son Theodrick Chas. City Co land 1741"

    * 1741 /2 Joseph Dabbs to Theodrick Carter north side Willis River
next to Orson Martin and James Webb

16 June 1741 Theodorlck Carter of Goochland Co., to Richard Manlng of same
[at face value, could be either Theo]

    * 1743 Orson Martin of Goochland to Theoderick Carter of Amelia
north side Willis river wit Edmund Gray.

    * 1750 Hutchins Burton of Cumberland Co.Va. to Thomas Platt land
north side Willis River adj. Theoderick Carter ,Thomas Bassett & Robert Burton.

"The Willis River rises in southern Buckingham County and initially flows eastwardly into [southern] Cumberland County, where it turns north-northeastwardly for the remainder of its course. It flows into the James River in northern Cumberland County, about 6 mi (10 km) southeast of Columbia".

Amelia County is nowhere near the Willis - it's on the other (east) side of Cumberland:
The County, named for Princess Amelia, daughter of George II of England, was created by a legislative act in 1734, and in 1735, it was created from Prince George and Brunswick Counties. Then, in 1754, Prince Edward County was formed from Amelia County, and later the County was reduced to its current size when Nottoway County was separated in 1789.

    * These three deed citations could be anywhere along the Willis - including the intersection with the James River - which is exactly where Carters Ferry (of Robert) is. Thing is, per the description of the river flowing North by Northeast, the only land truly north of the Willis River is in that small pocket up at the James River - where the Willis turns sharply East just before emptying into the James.

And yet, these are just deed locations - except for the 1743 citation, these do not tell us where the Theo in question was living at the time. We have many cases where in other lines where transactions were being conducted after the removal of the property owner.

Theodrick CARTER Birth: EST 1706 Henrico Co VA Death: AFT 1774 Charles City Co VA

    June Cottrell's 17 Sep 1996 E-mail:
1741 - Giles Carter acknowledged a deed to his son Theodorick
Charles City Co., VA Records 1737-1774, Weisiger III, p 85
1742 Giles CARTER sold land to Theodorick CARTER in Henrico Co VA

The following are all from June Cottrell's 8 Dec 1997 e-mail:
1753 Will of John Cocke of Henrico Co was witnessed by Theodorick & Joseph Carter.
1756 transaction with the Hamlett family
1759 Theo & Joseph witness to will of John Cocke (probably the actual probate)
1761 A deed from Robert Povall of Henrico Co. to Theodrick Carter of Charles City Co.
1752 A second transaction with the Hamlett family.
1768 Theodrick Carter married Elizabeth, widow of Samuel GREGORY in Charles City Co.
1771 Theodrick did the inventory of Littleberry Hardyman
1774 Theodrick did the inventory of Henry Phillips.

Joseph Carter may be Theodrick's son.

A solid, continuous presence where the combined transactions of 1742 and 1753 prove the three transactions on the north side of the Willis River must belong to Theo Junior - in Amelia County by 1743 - and not the son of Giles Junior. And ... let's remember that the mother of Theo Junior is now proven to be Elizabeth Webb - per the 1741 transaction north of the Willis.

4036 Nancy Fitzgerald and husband Thomas Fitzgerald - Petition for Divorce, Caswell County, N.C. NC General Assembly Session Records Nov-Dec 1811 Box 3: Petition of Nancy Fitzgerald of Caswell County, North Carolina represents that she intermarried with a certain Thomas Fitzgerald with whom she lived about six years, and by whom she had three children. Her said husband eventually gave in to intoxication and other kinds of dissipation and extravagance, and "after spending the whole of his property, left your petitioner and children in a lamentable situation dependent wholly upon the benevolence of her father, and fled to the State of Kentucky, where he has, or is about to marry another woman, as appears from a letter accompanying this petition." Prays for a law securing to her such property as she may hereafter acquire by industry or otherwise. Divorce Granted!

4040 Nancy Waddill Carter (who married Thompson) had a brother, Waddill Carter. I have a copy of Waddill Carter's will from 1782, in which he mentions his "young son John." I am suspecting (but have not proven) that this John may be my long lost John Carter for whom I have spent years searching.

Here is what I know of my family (taken from a family ledger owned by William below and court records):

    John Carter 25 March 1775 - 17 December 1852 married 21 March 1821 Oney Pollard 3 Sept. 1790 - after 1850
    His children were:
    1. William R. Carter 16 Sept. 1809 - 7 Feb. 1886 married 4 Feb. 1846 Mary Elizabeth Pollard 1 May 1829 - 1878
    2. Beverly Atwood Carter 3 July 1813 - 17 Sept. 1862 at the Battle of Sharpsburg (unmarried)
    3. Mary Elizabeth Carter 21 July 1821 - after 1880 married James Davis 16 Jan. 1799 - 8 Sept. 1845

My John Carter first shows up on Amelia County Census Records in 1820. There is a John Carter on the 1810 Census in Prince Edward who is described as being married and with one infant son (which would match my John's description). It is clear to me that John was married to another woman before he married Oney Pollard in Amelia in 1821, since all three of his children were born before then.

I have been somewhat hung up on the middle name of one of John's sons: Atwood. There are not many Atwoods in Virginia at this time. They seem to either be in Culpepper County (and they all move to present day West Virginia) or in Prince Edward County. Although I have not been able to find intermarriage between the Carters and the Atwoods, I have made this link: James Atwood dies in PEC in 1771. His will is witnessed by James Wade and Charles Wade. James and Charles Wade are the father and brother of Mildred Wade, who married Waddill Carter around 1765 in PEC. The name Atwood is too obscure (unlike say "Franklin") for there not to have been anyone to have known somebody of that name.

4041 Nancy Watson, d/o Michael Watson married Thomas Eggleton. She is his third wife. Watson, Nancy/Anne (I12065)

4042 Nannie Kate was called "Nannie" as a child. She appears on the census record as Nannie. As an adult, she is remembered as, Kate, visiting her sister, Ruth (Marlowe) for month-long visits during the summers, when grandchildren, Irene and Wayne (Marlowe) visited their grandmother Ruth Reynolds (Marlowe) who lived next door; (on the next farm 'down the road'.)
Nannie Kate married Johnnie Motley and had children, one, whose name was Fairy.
Leveria "Leanna" Ann Reynolds, d/o Bart and Nannie Reynolds, sister of Nannie Kate married H.G. Motley, brother of J.L. According to her sister's Bible record, Leanna died in 1904; before either of her parents. She was married to H. G. Motley on June 23, 1898 "at the appointed place" by W.S. Minter
Leanna married H. G. and her sister Nannie Kate married J. L. Motley, 27 Feb 1901, both sons of J. F. and Nannie Motley (Marriage Licenses)
