3657 Martha (Patsy Emmerson m Isham Myers. She is the sister of Judith Emmerson who married James Samuel Jackson. Emmerson, Martha "Patsy" (I12591)

3658 Martha Ann Jackson is the daughter of James Samuel Jackson and Judith Emmerson. Judith Emmerson is the daughter of John Emmerson. Judith Emmerson DOB of 1787 is from an entry in the LDS IGI. She was deceased by Jan 1833 when James Jackson married a second time and two of her younger children were in the household of her sister and brother-in-law Anne Emmerson Jackson and Levi Jackson.  Jackson, Martha Ann (I5344)

3659 Martha Ann Jackson, d/o James Samuel and Judith Emmerson Jackson is the niece of Levi Jackson. Levi and his wife Ann Emmerson (sister to Martha's mother, Judith) had no children of their own and reared Judith's children after her death in circa 1828. Martha too, was probably in their household in the 1830 Census which shows one female child age 10-15 along with 6 other children. Levi and Ann had no children. Presumably these children are those of Ann's sister. It is likely that Martha named her eldest son, Levi for her uncle who helped raise her.
At the time of the 1880 Census they were living in Franklin Co., next door to Susan Bryant, proven to be a daughter of James, (sister of Martha Ann) Martha Ann is named for her mother's grandmother, Martha Walker.

    3664 MARTHA WAYLES SKELTON JEFFERSON
    First husband:
18 years old, to Bathurst Skelton (June 1744 - 30 September 1768) planter, on 20, November 1766 likely at "The Forest" plantation; they lived at his Charles City County plantation for one year and ten months, the endurance of their marriage as Bathurst died in 1768.
    Born:
    1748, October 19
"The Forest" plantation, Charles City County, Virginia
    Father:
John Wayles, barrister and landowner, born 31 January, 1715 in Lancaster, England; died 23 May, 1773 in Charles City County, Virginia
    Mother:
Martha Eppes Wayles, born 10 April, 1712 in Bermuda Hundred, Chesterfield County, Virginia; married John Wayles on 3 May, 1746; died 5 November, 1748
When Martha Eppes married John Wayles, she brought with her, as part of her dowry, an African slave woman and the woman's half-black, half-white daughter. The woman, enslaved in Africa, sailed to Virginia on a slave ship commanded by an English sea captain with the last name Hemings. Captain Hemings impregnated the slave who gave birth to a daughter she named Betty. The slave and her daughter were sold to Francis and Frances Eppes, and they gave the young enslaved "Betty Hemings" to their daughter Martha Eppes family. When Captain Hemings learned that the newly married Wayles had inherited his concubine and their daughter Betty, he offered to buy the pair. Wayles refused to sell them. He would eventually have six children by her.
Martha Wayles Jefferson never knew her mother Martha Eppes Wayles since she had died two weeks and three days after giving birth to her.
After the death of his first wife, Martha Eppes (the mother of Mrs. Jefferson), John Wayles married two more times; he married secondly to Mary Cocke by whom he had one [name unknown] daughter who died young; John Wayles married a third time, on 3, January 1760 to Elizabeth Lomax, with whom he had three daughters. After the death of Elizabeth Lomax (28 May 1763), Wayles took the half-black half-white slave Betty Hemings as his concubine and had six children by her. Betty Hemings was mentioned in the will of John Wayles, thus providing evidence that she really was his mistress and not merely his slave. The first husband of Elizabeth Lomax was Reuben Skelton - he was the brother of Martha Jefferson's first husband, Bathurst Skelton; thus Martha Wayles Skelton's brother-in-law was her stepmother's first husband:

    Franklin Phillips

Sir I regret very much to inform you of the death of your son. He departed this life on the 7 of the month. He was confined to his bed 17 days. He had all the attention that any man could get. I visited him in his sickness. He was at a private house by the name of Perkins. Mr. & Mrs Perkins was very kind to him, done all in their power for him. He had Typhoid fever. I tried very hard to send his body home but failed, the Gen would not sign a furlough for any body to carry him. I had him decently buried in a good coffin, I attended to it myself. I marked his grave so if you wanted to get his body so you could find it. He had 50 cts in silver & a few postage stamps in his pocket book. Jarrel Powell has his pocket book. The Yankees visited the house while he was there. They stole his hat & some other things. I sent his horse to you the 14th by Mart & all his clothes. I hope they will arrive safe.

Say to his wife that he died in his right mind & expressed a great desire to see her before his died. He said he was willing to die but preferred to die at home. He died very easy like going to sleep without a struggle. Tell her any thing I can do for her in settling up his claims with (the) goverment or in any other way, I will with the greatest pleasure.

    Yours with much respect
    Jas. T. Mitchell

    _______________

On July 5, 1871 Catherine married Larkin Grinstead, 12 years her senior. At the outbreak of the war Grinstead was a resident of neighboring Person County . He enlisted in Co. D., 13th N.C. Infantry on July 30, 1861 and remained as a private in that unit until it surrendered as part of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. By coincidence, this is the same regiment in which Franklin Summers Phillips’ future father-in-law, Pleasant Johnson Scott also served. However P.J. Scott was in Co. A, the Caswell Company of the 13th. The 1880 census found Catherine (then 35) and Larkin Grinstead (then 47) residing in Danville (First Ward) where his occupation is listed as a tobacconist. By 1900 Catherine was once again a widow and living next to her older brother Henry E. Powell and his family in Dan River Township in Caswell County . My Aunt Lessie Phillips (1894-1990) recalled, as a child, a visit from "Miss Mary Catherine" who rode to their house on horseback. She last appears on the 1910 census as 65 year old Mary C. Grinstead back in Danville ( Third Ward) as a lodger in a house with two other elderly widowed ladies who, like her, never had children. She died August 6, 1917 in Caswell Co. and is buried in a "F. (family) Grave Yard".

3690 Mary seems to have been enumerated twice in 1900. Once in Wisconsin and once in Indiana. The information, except her middle initial is exactly the same. My speculation is that she was in Indiana for the birth of her granddaughter by Edna. Orpha was born in May 1900 and was enumerated as being 0/12 years old. The Wisconsin enumeration was probably her husband listing her as she was just temporarily out of town. White, Mary Abigail (I3614)
