My great-great-great-grandparents on my gg grandfathers' side were Mastin Powell and Mary called "Polly" Carter. He was a settler, tavern keeper, owner of a race track and slaves. They resided about 8 miles below Milton, NC on Powell Creek, Halifax Co., VA now Turberville. They had nine children:
> Carter, 5/6/1800-10/26/1857, married Sarah Bates Moore,
1/31/1804-10/21/1877, 6/22/1822; Elizabeth married Gerald Powell, her uncle, 12/24/1816;
Biggers married Gillie Lipscomb, 6/16/1829;
John Bibb married Nancy Carter;
Nancy T. married Richard Carter;
Mary Ann married Green Carter;
William Jefferson married Elizabeth Allen Carter;
Susan married Jackson "Jack" her nephew;
Harriett I. married, 1st Joseph Yarbrough and, 2nd, Henry Laws. Most of their children settled in and around

This Indenture made this fourth day of October one thousand Eight hundred and four Between Maston Powell of the County of Halifax of Virginia of the one Part and Thomas Jones Chambers of the County of Person of state of North Carolina of the Other Part. Witnesseth that the said Maston Powell for and in consideration of the sum of Twenty five Pounds of Virginia money to me in hand paid by the said Thomas J. Chambers the Receipt which he the said Maston Powell Doth hereby acknowledge Hath Given and Granted and by these Presents do Give Grant bargain and sell Alien Enferoffe? release and confirm unto the said Thomas J. Chambers his heirs and assigns forever all his right as a Legatee of Richard Carter, deceased Late of Halifax County, Virginia ? the said Maston Powell intermarried Polly Carter, Daughter of the said Richard Carter Deceased in and to a tract of land Whereon William Carter now lives. Containing by Estimation two Hundred and thirty three acres more of less the said Maston?s Part being one Eight of the land aforesaid lying and being in the County of Person and State of North Carolina on the Waters of Hico and Bounded by the Lands of Robert Howard George Grigory and the said Thomas J. Chambers with the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders right Title Interest Claim or Demand of him the said Maston Powell as the the said Maston Powell Was Lawfully Seized on the Premises of the said Maston Powell for himself his heirs etc. Do and Will Warrant and forever Defend the same to the said Thomas J. Chambers his heirs etc. against the Claim of himself his heirs etc. and every Other Person or Persons Whatsoever. In Witness Whereof the said Maston Powell hath hereunto set his hand and Seal the Day and Year first above written.
