Martha Ann Jackson

Notes:

Martha Ann Jackson, d/o James Samuel and Judith Emmerson Jackson is the niece of Levi Jackson. Levi and his wife Ann Emmerson (sister to Martha's mother, Judith) had no children of their own and reared Judith's children after her death in circa 1828. Martha too, was probably in their household in the 1830 Census which shows one female child age 10-15 along with 6 other children. Levi and Ann had no children. Presumably these children are those of Ann's sister. It is likely that Martha named her eldest son, Levi for her uncle who helped raise her.
At the time of the 1880 Census they were living in Franklin Co., next door to Susan Bryant, proven to be a daughter of James, (sister of Martha Ann) Martha Ann is named for her mother's grandmother, Martha Walker.

The 'modern' marker for Allen Gilmer and Martha Ann Jackson Reynolds was installed by Mrs. Ruth Mae Reynolds Marlowe, d/o William Barton "Bart" and Nancy "Nannie" Reynolds. Martha Ann Jackson was Ruth's grandmother.

Martha Ann Jackson is the daughter of James Samuel Jackson and Judith Emmerson. Judith Emmerson is the daughter of John Emmerson. Judith Emmerson DOB of 1787 is from an entry in the LDS IGI. She was deceased by Jan 1833 when James Jackson married a second time and two of her younger children were in the household of her sister and brother-in-law Anne Emmerson Jackson and Levi Jackson.

Martha married Allen Gilmer Reynolds on 24 May 1843 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Levi C. Reynolds is not listed in the 1913 Chancery Suite naming Sarah Philpott Reynolds' Grandchildren. It is likely that Levi who is shown on the 1850 and 1860 Virginia Census Records in this family is not the Levi found in Cecil County, Maryland and who died after the date of this suit.

Examination of the Census Records for 1900 and 1910 show that Bart and his family are closely situated to the Joshua Columbus Manning's (married his sister Mary Permelia "Bettie" Reynolds. They are shown within two households of one-another on each Census.

Born 28 Sep 1848 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, William Barton Reynolds, was the fourth child of Allen Gilmer Reynolds and Martha Ann Jackson. Bart was named for his father's brother, William Barton Reynolds, Sr. (Barton), a testament of his father's regard for his brother. The name Barton first appears in our family when Bart's grandmother, Sarah Philpott named Bart's uncle in 1827, after her great-great grandmother, Elizabeth Barton Smoot, born in 1701.

"Bart" became his 'distinguishing name', very early. He had two older brothers, Levi and James Samuel, each named for his mother's father and his mother's brother; each instrumental in her upbringing. Older sister Tabitha Ann and younger siblings John Henry, Cephus Wilson, Elizabeth "Bettie' and Texanna composed Bart's family. Texanna, was born after her mother's brother moved to Texas, and was so named to commerate the event.

We find no evidence of Bart serving in an official capacity during the Civil War. Too young, to go away, he served at home, with a thousand chores and fear everywhere. His uncles, served in the Home Guard, their sons, so many of them; gone to fight. Loved-ones left at home, to worry and fear. Bart grows into manhood while the war rages and claims his cousins. His brother, Levi, leaves home in 1860 to travel to Pennsylvania and marry; Levi is 23, Bart 12. Brother James Samuel is 16, John Henry is 5 and Cephus is 2 years old. Sister Bettie is 9; Tabitha is 14 and Texanna is 7. Levi is the only one of his siblings who will leave Pittsylvania County to make his home.

During his 25th year, Bart marries the very attractive 18 year old Nancy Reynolds in about 1873. His brother James Samuel "Jim" marries her sister Bet about the same time. They knew them well. The girls are the daughters of his Uncle Barton and Aunt Rutha Reynolds. Three other of the girls also married cousins.

Bart and Nancy farmed on Barn Road in Callands. A family photograph of their log cabin, taken in 1898 shows all of their children except the last one, Buster, who was in his mother's belly for the occasion. Bart is 50, Nancy, 44. They have buried two newborn babies in the last 3 years, and she is pregnant again. Their private cemetery marks their sorrows; two infants graves, marked with fieldstones, In another six years they will bury their oldest daughter. Dead before her prime, grieved by her parents, siblings and all of her grandparents, cousins, and a husband.

Weddings and births, christenings and parties mark the years as they pass. They have 10 children living before 1900; eight will survive into middle age and most will bring home their own babies.

Bart has had diabetes for a long time. He lost his right leg below the knee; an infection that would not heal. The disease would take its toll before his death, progressing in a now predictable sequence of events; a disease that would trickle down through his progeny for the next 110 years.

By 1910 the next generation has begun, and the last generation is a beloved memory. Bart's mother and father are dead. Nancy's mother and father died with a year of each other, nearly 20 years earlier. Bart's oldest son has a son; his eldest daughter is dead. Molly too has a young son, and is about to remarry in Norfolk; Essie is settled with several children; Missy is about to have her first baby; Kate 29, has moved to North Carolina; Jim, 25, is courting Sally Fannie Wells, and Claira and Ruth are striking 18 and 20 year-olds, as yet unclaimed by mates. Ford is 23 and Buster, his baby son is only 12 years old.

The next 100 years see his progeny increase, and the legacy of this man's integrity, determination, faith, love and respect find its way from his genes to ours.

I have another story for you. The day John Henry Reynolds, his wife Sally Frances Wells Reynolds and children, Charlie Wade, Mary Ann, Tabitha, Bogie, Silas and Callie were moving from the cabin on John Henry's dads place(Allen Gilmer Reynolds) there wasn't a bridge across Turkeycock creek so they had to lead the horse and wagon across. Mary Ann, the oldest girl was carrying the baby, Callie. She dropped her in the creek. Of course they grabbed her up and got her across. But I heard Aunt Mary Ann and Aunt Callie laughing and talking about it when they were old. Their Dad had bought a farm on Rd. 57 on the left just across the road from the CLCC parsonage (County Line Christian Church). When John Henry died the place had to be sold to pay off debts. Charlie moved the whole family across the road to Swanson place where they share cropped for about 18 years, I think. Then they moved to his Uncle Charlie Well's place in about 1936 and share cropped there until 1946 when he bought Grady store.

Luther Reynolds, 42, well known local citizen and employee of the Gravely Novelty Furniture Company, passed away early Sunday morning at his home on College Street following a week's illness. Death was attributed to pneumonia and other complicatons. Funeral services were held from Broad Street Christian Church, of which the deceased was an officer, Monday afternoon. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery. The deceased with his family was a native of Callands section in Pittsylvania County, but moved to Martinsville about six years ago. Surviving are his wife, one son and one daughter. Several brothers and sisters also remain. Charlie Wade Reynolds: From 1946 until his death he was a farmer, then a merchant who owned Charlie's Store in Grady, Va. From 1915-1945 (from the age of 27) he lived on the Swanson Place and Charlie Wells' Place.

For a year or two after he was married he and Annie lived on his father's (John Henry Reynolds) farm, which was sold after his death. The cabin was very cold in the winter and in bad shape.

Charlie, Annie, Basil & their baby Edith, Charlie's sisters, Callie & Tabbie and brothers Bogey & Silas then moved to the Swanson Place which was just across the road. Tabbie died from TB while living there. She was in her 20's and was engaged to a man from Danville. She was buried on the Lee Reynolds place near her parents. They stayed there until about 1936. The rest of the children were born while they lived there (7). It was a beautiful place surrounded with Cherry Trees. The children played in the Turkeycock Creek and the woods.

Uncle Allen and Aunt Charlotte lived on the place too. They were an old Black couple who had been slaves when they were children. Annie said that she couldn't have "done it" without Aunt Charlotte. Annie told many stories about Aunt Charlotte and how she helped care for the children. Aunt Charlotte lived in a cabin and cooked over a fireplace and carried water in a churn on top of her head up a hill from the spring. She also made ash bread, so called, because the dough was placed on a flat rock and covered with ashes and placed in the fire where it cooked. You then brushed or cut off the ashes and ate the bread. J. W. Swanson built his house where the cabin had stood (residence in 1930).

Virginia Pittsylvania Co. Heritage Book 1767-2004 Paragraph 900 Robert Edwin and Nannie Richardson Kendrick Reynolds. They were married on 3 Feb 1934. Nannie, the d/o William Thomas Kendrick and Mary Mays, and Edwin, the son of John Levi Reynolds and Emma. After their marriage they moved into a one-room cabin on John Levi's place and produced their first son Wesley 20 Jan 1935. That spring they moved about a mile to a one-room cabin, with a loft and lean-to, on Witchia A. Finney's farm. They farmed as tenant tobacco farmers for about 12 years. They used a black pot to make lye soap, heat water for baths and to can foods. "Whitewash" was brought from a pit nearby and 'daubed' on the inside of the cabin walls. Wewin cut his wheat with a hand cradle (sic), and a group of men with a 'combine' would come through the county each year and 'thrash' the wheat to be ground for flour, hog feed, etc. Cider making, corn 'shuckings, and 'pig pickins' were fall activities. Three other children, Janice, Jackie and Betty Lou, were born there. Those cold winter nights caused a lot of snuggling. The children slept in the loft and sometimes snow would blow in, between the logs and would cover the bed and floor. In 1947 Edwin bought an 80 acre farm, with a 4 room frame house and no electricity or plumbing, about a mile south, from Johnny Fuller, with the help of an uncle, Witchia Finney. In 1948 Edwin went to work at Lee Telephone Co. Edwin retired at age 62 and he and Nannie lived out their lives on the place, in much the same life-style as in the beginning, until their deaths 7 Aug 1997 and Nannie's in 3 Aug 1999.

This was at Dr. Richardson's office in Mt. Valley, VA. The boy was Wilbur. He was running in the hall at school (Callands school) bare-foot and got a huge splinter in his foot. When he got home his brother, Basil I. Reynolds (was killed in WWII) took him to the Dr. leading him on horseback. The heavy man was the Dr. I meant to take you up to see the Dr's place. It was restored by Max Kendall and sold to the present owner who lives there. It's only a mile above CLCC. Wilbur was an interesting fellow, very handsome and very talented. He taught himself to paint and also to play the mandolin. He was very good at both. He had a crazy since of humor and his best friend from childhood, Clifton Aaron was just as crazy. Clift lived in Roanoke and only visited Callands in the summer as a child. He came to stay with his Aunt Tabbie Aaron Coward but usually stayed with our family. The two of them learned to play musical instruments from mail order instructions. They build a small cabin with a fireplace and slept there and cooked over the fireplace when they were kids. They visited each other a couple of times a year after they married and always sat around playing the guitar and mandolin. They mailed an old dirty sock back and forth to each other for years on Christmas and birthdays. They were like two crazy kids all their lives. They both died young. Wilbur was only 62 and Clift was younger that that. Wilbur also build an airplane. Of course it wouldn't fly but it was quite the conversation piece, since it was covered in canvas and he had it hanging in a tree. One person could sit in it. He loved to tease children by pretending he had a baby chick in his hands and a lot of other crazy things. A very good friend of his, George Wells, who played the guitar with him had a recording made into an album in memory of Wilbur. They had taped themselves often and the tape has children talking in the background but it is a great keepsake in memory of Wilbur.

I wrote a poem called, Precious Memories about Wilbur. Here it is

His leaving has left an empty spot within my heart
where no one can ever take his place
but thank God for the precious memories
and a mind that can conjure up his face.

He filled many shoes for me as I was growing up.
That of an uncle, a close friend,
a dear brother, and so many times a loving father.
To friends his ear, he was always willing to lend.

He saw beauty where others saw none,
His talent as an artist was well known,
He heard music when some heard nothing,
He was misunderstood and sometimes walked alone.

He would listen to every ones problems
and not a criticism would he offer
but let you talk your way through them
until the problems seemed softer.

The children remember him for all the silly times
he made them laugh, these memories we can never rob
for he loved to tease dogs and children and ask,
"Do you think the rain will hurt the rhubarb?"

He loved and cared for so many of us
with his gentleness of a butterfly.
As long as we have these precious memories,
the Wilbur we knew will never die.
