      Carter Glass Powell (1800-1857)

His birth date also is seen as 16 May 1800. Source: The Heritage of Caswell County, North Carolina, Jeannine D. Whitlow, Editor (1985) at 438-439 (Article #573 "The Carter Powell Family" by Mrs Helen Powell Neal).

The owners of the homes in which Thomas Day's architectural woodwork is found constituted some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in the Dan River region: physician John Tab Garland, M.D., at one time the richest man in Caswell County (1850s and 1860s); banker and civic leader Thomas Donoho Johnston; machine shop, foundry, and sawmill owner Caleb Richmond; state senator James Kerr; merchant and tobacco factory owner John Wilson; planters William Long (also the owner of a sawmill and gristmill), Sidney Lea, George Williamson, Haywood Williams, Thomas Mumford McGehee, and William H. Holderness.

Family relationships among the planters enhanced the demand for Thomas-Day-made architectural trimwork. Thomas Donoho Johnston built Clarendon Hall in 1842 and tapped Day to embellish the interior; when his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and William Long, built the Long House in 1856, they, too, turned to Day. Day provided the architectural woodwork for the house of Captain Carter Powell around 1848 and that of his son Henry Alexander Powell less than a decade later. Thomas L. Lea and his siblings Sidney S. Lea and Rebecca Lea (Mrs. George Williamson), his niece Elizabeth Lea (Mrs. Calvin Graves), and his daughter Ann Lea (Mrs. William Griffin Graves) provided Day the opportunity to do the woodwork on a law office and four of their five houses between 1840 and 1850.

The woodwork suggests the Carter Powell house was built around 1848 rather than the more often cited 1850. Day's machine-cut newels with tendrils date Henry Powell's house to 1853-1855. Day's work for Elizabeth Lea and Calvin Graves was not on their house, as it was built several years earlier, but on Calvin's law office, for which Day supplied the mantel. For a discussion of this family, see Whitlow, "Thomas L. Lea," in Heritage of Caswell County, 354.

      _______________

Source: The Bee newspaper, 21 November 1922 (Danville, Virginia), from which the following is quoted:

      Mrs. Annie Fuller Passes Away

Death unexpectedly yesterday afternoon [20 November 1922] removed one of Danville's oldest residents, Mrs. Annie Catherine Fuller who passed away quietly at 140 Main Street at about half past two o'clock. She was 95 years of age.

Mrs Fuller last week had an attack of pneumonia but had apparently overcome it. All day yesterday she was in bright spirits and, as ever, keenly appreciative of everything that was being done for her. She had just been talking to her trained nurse when she lapsed into unconsciousness and was dead within two or three minutes.

Mrs. Fuller had been an invalid for the past five years or from the day she fell and broke her hip. Notwithstanding this confinement she had remarkably well preserved faculties and she remained fully conversant with world affairs almost until her death. One of the most enjoyed events of the day for her was perusal of the daily paper which she read unaided maintaining interest in national and world affairs and discussing them with discrimination.

Mrs. Fuller was a daughter of the late Carter Powell and Sallie A. Moore, being born in Caswell County in the distant year of 1827. she lived for some time at Blanche, N.C., and then she moved to Bachelor's Hall. She was married to A. G. Fuller in 1847 and moved to Danville in 1865 making her home here ever since. Her husband who died about twelve years ago was prominently identified with Danville's tobacco industry. They had seven children but Mrs. Fuller outlived all but two, James E. Fuller and John E. Fuller both of this city. She also leaves five grand children, Albert Patton, W. F. Patton, Winston Edwards, Miss Janie Edwards, and W. A. Fuller, and a great grandchild.

Mrs. Fuller was for many years a member of Mount Vernon Methodist Church being probably one of the oldest members. During her early life here she was active in affairs and was well known and widely esteemed. She was endowed with many fine traits of character and through her lond period of confinement had shown exemplary Christian fortitude.

The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock from the home on South Main Street.

      Notes:

      Mastin James Powell (1824-1902)

Apparently named for his maternal grandfather. His middle name may be Jefferson. See the obituary of William Brooks Powell (1853-1923).

      1880 United States Federal Census
      Name: M. J. Powell

Mastin James Powell apparently was married twice. Note that the obituary of his son William Brooks Powell refers to a half-brother named John B. Powell. And, the obituary of John Bibb Powell refers to three half-sisters. It appears that Mastin James Powell's first wife was Susan Hubbard, and that she was the mother of John Bibb Powell. That both wives had the given name Susan caused some confusion.

The 1850 US Federal Census (Caswell County, North Carolina) also lists a Mastin Powell (25, born in Caswell County, farmer), apparently with daughter Mary I. (3, born in Caswell County), and son John (1, born in Caswell County). If these are children of the Mastin James Powell of this entry their mother would be Susan Hubbard. Query whether she died giving birth to John Powell in 1849 (and whether this is John Bibb Powell).

      Franklin Phillips

Sir I regret very much to inform you of the death of your son. He departed this life on the 7 of the month. He was confined to his bed 17 days. He had all the attention that any man could get. I visited him in his sickness. He was at a private house by the name of Perkins. Mr. & Mrs Perkins was very kind to him, done all in their power for him. He had Typhoid fever. I tried very hard to send his body home but failed, the Gen would not sign a furlough for any body to carry him. I had him decently buried in a good coffin, I attended to it myself. I marked his grave so if you wanted to get his body so you could find it. He had 50 cts in silver & a few postage stamps in his pocket book. Jarrel Powell has his pocket book. The Yankees visited the house while he was there. They stole his hat & some other things. I sent his horse to you the 14th by Mart & all his clothes. I hope they will arrive safe.

Say to his wife that he died in his right mind & expressed a great desire to see her before his died. He said he was willing to die but preferred to die at home. He died very easy like going to sleep without a struggle. Tell her any thing I can do for her in settling up his claims with (the) goverment or in any other way, I will with the greatest pleasure.

      Yours with much respect

On July 5, 1871 Catherine married Larkin Grinstead, 12 years her senior. At the outbreak of the war Grinstead was a resident of neighboring Person County . He enlisted in Co. D., 13th N.C. Infantry on July 30, 1861 and remained as a private in that unit until it surrendered as part of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. By coincidence, this is the same regiment in which Franklin Summers Phillips’ future father-in-law, Pleasant Johnson Scott also served. However P.J. Scott was in Co. A, the Caswell Company of the 13th. The 1880 census found Catherine (then 35) and Larkin Grinstead (then 47) residing in Danville (First Ward) where his occupation is listed as a tobacconist. By 1900 Catherine was once again a widow and living next to her older brother Henry E. Powell and his family in Dan River Township in Caswell County . My Aunt Lessie Phillips (1894-1990) recalled, as a child, a visit from "Miss Mary Catherine" who rode to their house on horseback. She last appears on the 1910 census as 65 year old Mary C. Grinstead back in Danville ( Third Ward) as a lodger in a house with two other elderly widowed ladies who, like her, never had children. She died August 6, 1917 in Caswell Co. and is buried in a "F. (family) Grave Yard".

The record is nearly illegible but does not look like Son or Daughter for this person and the Birth Date is illegible as well. It is possible that this Richard is Claiborne's FATHER who would be nearly 88 years old. Further research is necessary.

"I was about to give the same guess [as to the person for whom Blanch, North Carolina was named], although I didn't know that Blanche Moore's father had run the post office. Blanche Moore was a cousin of my grandmother's, Lydia Anne Watkins, and they were very close. I remember visiting "Cousin Blanche" as a child when she lived in the house the Moorefields own now. She was quite a lady, and Blanch can be proud to be named for her! My grandparents built the house in Blanch that Wayne and Linda Bray now own, and they raised a family of 11 children. After he turned his dairy farm over to a son, my grandfather also ran the post office and train station there. It was before my day, but have heard many stories of the "hobos" who road the trains during and after the depression and stopped in the area. My grandfather bought some beautiful pieces from peddlers who rode through (former shop owners who had lost all but their merchandise). Some of those things have been handed down through the family."

      John Bibb Powell (c.1850 - 1924)

John T. Neal was born 20 Mar 1838 and died 25 Jun 1864. He married Lucy A. Howard on 11 Dec 1859 in Caswell Co., NC. Lucy was born in 1835 and died 25 Aug 1862 when her 2nd child was born. The children of John and Lucy are Mary Susan Neal (17 Nov 1861 - 05 Jul 1935) and William Howard Neal (21 Aug 1862 - 28 Sep 1923). Mary Susan Neal married John B. Powell in Caswell Co. on 29 Apr 1878. He was the son of M. J. Powell and Susan. Susan Neal Powell is buried in Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery. William Howard Neal married Alma W. Hodges in Caswell Co. on 23 Feb 1898. She was the daughter of J. T Hodges and Mattie. Wm. H. Neal is buried in Moon Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. [The Beaver Pond Neals of Virginia by Carl B. Neal, March 1965.] Source: Kathleen Dawson (batsbelfry1@comcast.net).

Note the existence in this database of several entries that would have the initials M. J. Powell, purportedly the father of John B. Powell. Moreover, one of these entries, Mastin James Powell married Susan Gillespie. See the Susan referenced in the notes above. Accordingly, John Bibb Powell (c.1850 - 1924) had been included as a son of Mastin James Powell and Susan H. Gillespie. However, it appears that Mastin James Powell's first wife was Susan Hubbard, and that she was the mother of John Bibb Powell. That both wives had the given name Susan caused some confusion.

      J. B. Powell Dies After Long Illness

The death occurred this afternoon at 1:20 o'clock of John Bibb Powell, at his home on East Paxton street, following a lingering illness, being bedridden for about a year. Deceased who was 74 years of age, had been a resident of this city for the past six years, having removed here from Caswell county where he was born. His death was due to a complication of diseases and infirmities of age.

Besides his wife, who was formerly Miss Susie Neal, he is survived by the following children: Mrs. L. T. Oakley, Richmond; Mrs. Hunter Wults, Mrs. B. O. Lee, Mrs. Gene Scearce, John Powell and Charles Powell, all of Danville; also three half sisters: Mrs.
      R. M. Hubbard, South Hill, S. C., Mrs. J. H. Slade, Purley, N. C., and Mrs. John G. Lea of this city.

Announcement of the funeral will be made later, as arrangements had not been made this afternoon.

      Funeral of Mr. Powell

The funeral of J. Bibb Powell, who died on Thursday afternoon at his home, 1012 West Paxton street, was conducted yesterday afternoon at three o'clock from the home, the remains being taken to the Shady church and interred in the church cemetery. Rev. J. M. Shelburne conducted the funeral.

      The pall bearers were W. H. Wilson, J. L. Abbott, J. W. Bray, Haskins McFall, Dr. Raymond Scruggs, J. R. Stevens, F. A. Gourley.

The flower bearers were John Travis, Gordon Powell, Will Connor, Henry Wilson, W. N. Perkinson, P. L. Anderson, Harry Nobley, J. E. Lawrence, Dorsey Fowlkes, J. H. Ellis,

Note the reference in the above obituary to half sisters, which indicates that at least one of his parents was married more than once. Also, the obituary of William Brooks Powell (1853-1923) refers to a half-brother, John B. Powell. As all the other siblings were younger than William Brooks Powell, the also would have been half-siblings of John Bibb Powell. Thus it appears that Susan H. Gillespie is not the mother of John Bibb Powell, and that Susan Hubbard was his mother. She apparently was the first wife of Mastin James Powell.

John Bibb Powell (Mastin James Powell2, Jarrold Powell1) was born ABT 1850, and died 30 JAN 1924 in Danville, Virginia. He married Mary Susan Neal 29 APR 1878 in Caswell County, North Carolina, daughter of John T. Neal and Lucy Ann Howard. She was born 17 NOV 1861, and died 05 JUL 1935. She was buried in Shady Grove United Methodist Church (Caswell County, North Carolina).

      W. Brooks Powell Dies Unexpectedly

William Brooks Powell, for thirty-four years, a well-known citizen of Danville, died unexpectedly at his home, 775 Main street, shortly before seven o'clock, Sunday night. Mr. Powell, who was 70 years of age, had been in declining health for five years, but his death was quite unanticipated. He had been able to go out recently, and had been engaged on tobacco market during the heavy period of the past week.
