He m (2) Lelia L HART on 22 Apr 1903 in Elkhart, IN. His death in 1908 was caused by a fall from the steps of a moving train in White Pigeon, MI. ( See obits in Lovina SMILEY's scrapbook.)

Charles and Clara owned and operated the Wetherby Funeral Home in Jackson. She continued managing it after Charles' death until shortly before her death at age 91. They had no children but helped her nephew, James S. HITCHCOCK, and his family during the Depression of the 1930's. They were known as Uncle Charles and Aunt Tad to James and his family.
