      James Allen Poteat (c.1922-2011)

      Bakersville, North Carolina - James Allen Poteat, age 89, of Fork Mountain Road, Bakersville, N.C., passed away February 21, 2011 at his residence. He was born in Yanceyville, N.C., which is located in Caswell County, the son of the late Cora Ollie and Lewis Walker Poteat. He was preceded in death by son, James Allen Poteat Jr. and wife, Jean Ellen Brown Poteat. He is survived by daughter, Virginia Poteat Lovejoy and husband Gordon of Bakersville, N.C., sister, Betty Crichlow of Griffin, Ga., grandchildren, Aimee Lauren Lovejoy, Joshua Allen Poteat and wife Allison, Gabriel James Lovejoy and wife Erin, and Kira Marie Poteat, and great grandchild, Jacob Nathaniel Bacon.

      He has been blessed with a loving family and many special friends. He lived a full and blessed life. After service in the U.S. Navy during WWII he was a dedicated employee of American Oil Company for 35 years and retired as a terminal superintendent in Philadelphia, Penn. He and his wife, Jean, retired to Wilmington, N.C. where he was a member of Church of the Servant. And most recently, after a move to be closer to his daughter and son-in-law, he joined the membership of Little Rock Creek Baptist Church, Bakersville, N.C. His joy for life and devotion and precious love of family will be remembered.

      A graveside service will be held Friday, February 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Oleander Memorial Park in Wilmington, N.C. with Rev. Catherine Powell officiating. Memorials may be made to: Little Rock Creek Baptist Baptist Church Benevolence Fund, 48 Green Creek Road, Bakersville, NC, 28705 or to Hospice of Mitchell County, 236 Hospital Drive, Spruce Pine, NC 28777. Henline-Hughes Funeral Home is assisting the Poteat family.
