The owners of the homes in which Thomas Day's architectural woodwork is found constituted some of the wealthiest and most powerful individuals in the Dan River region: physician John Tab Garland, M.D., at one time the richest man in Caswell County (1850s and 1860s); banker and civic leader Thomas Donoho Johnston; machine shop, foundry, and sawmill owner Caleb Richmond; state senator James Kerr; merchant and tobacco factory owner John Wilson; planters William Long (also the owner of a sawmill and gristmill), Sidney Lea, George Williamson, Haywood Williams, Thomas Mumford McGehee, and William H. Holderness.
Family relationships among the planters enhanced the demand for Thomas-Day-made architectural trimwork. Thomas Donoho Johnston built Clarendon Hall in 1842 and tapped Day to embellish the interior; when his sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and William Long, built the Long House in 1856, they, too, turned to Day. Day provided the architectural woodwork for the house of Captain Carter Powell around 1848 and that of his son Henry Alexander Powell less than a decade later. Thomas L. Lea and his siblings Sidney S. Lea and Rebecca Lea (Mrs. George Williamson), his niece Elizabeth Lea (Mrs. Calvin Graves), and his daughter Ann Lea (Mrs. William Griffin Graves) provided Day the opportunity to do the woodwork on a law office and four of their five houses between 1840 and 1850.
The woodwork suggests the Carter Powell house was built around 1848 rather than the more often cited 1850. Day's machine-cut newels with tendrils date Henry Powell's house to 1853-1855. Day's work for Elizabeth Lea and Calvin Graves was not on their house, as it was built several years earlier, but on Calvin's law office, for which Day supplied the mantel. For a discussion of this family, see Whitlow, "Thomas L. Lea," in Heritage of Caswell County, 354.

Source: The Bee newspaper, 21 November 1922 (Danville, Virginia), from which the following is quoted:
Mrs. Annie Fuller Passes Away
Death unexpectedly yesterday afternoon [20 November 1922] removed one of Danville's oldest residents, Mrs. Annie Catherine Fuller who passed away quietly at 140 Main Street at about half past two o'clock. She was 95 years of age.
Mrs Fuller last week had an attack of pneumonia but had apparently overcome it. All day yesterday she was in bright spirits and, as ever, keenly appreciative of everything that was being done for her. She had just been talking to her trained nurse when she lapsed into unconsciousness and was dead within two or three minutes.
Mrs. Fuller had been an invalid for the past five years or from the day she fell and broke her hip. Notwithstanding this confinement she had remarkably well preserved faculties and she remained fully conversant with world affairs almost until her death. One of the most enjoyed events of the day for her was perusal of the daily paper which she read unaided maintaining interest in national and world affairs and discussing them with discrimination.
Mrs. Fuller was a daughter of the late Carter Powell and Sallie A. Moore, being born in Caswell County in the distant year of 1827. she lived for some time at Blanche, N.C., and then she moved to Bachelor's Hall. She was married to A. G. Fuller in 1847 and moved to Danville in 1865 making her home here ever since. Her husband who died about twelve years ago was prominently identified with Danville's tobacco industry. They had seven children but Mrs. Fuller outlived all but two, James E. Fuller and John E. Fuller both of this city. She also leaves five grand children, Albert Patton, W. F. Patton, Winston Edwards, Miss Janie Edwards, and W. A. Fuller, and a great grandchild.
Mrs. Fuller was for many years a member of Mount Vernon Methodist Church being probably one of the oldest members. During her early life here she was active in affairs and was well known and widely esteemed. She was endowed with many fine traits of character and through her lond period of confinement had shown exemplary Christian fortitude.
The funeral will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock from the home on South Main Street.

"I was about to give the same guess [as to the person for whom Blanch, North Carolina was named], although I didn't know that Blanche Moore's father had run the post office. Blanche Moore was a cousin of my grandmother's, Lydia Anne Watkins, and they were very close. I remember visiting "Cousin Blanche" as a child when she lived in the house the Moorefields own now. She was quite a lady, and Blanch can be proud to be named for her! My grandparents built the house in Blanch that Wayne and Linda Bray now own, and they raised a family of 11 children. After he turned his dairy farm over to a son, my grandfather also ran the post office and train station there. It was before my day, but have heard many stories of the "hobos" who road the trains during and after the depression and stopped in the area. My grandfather bought some beautiful pieces from peddlers who rode through (former shop owners who had lost all but their merchandise). Some of those things have been handed down through the family."

The Association [Caswell County Historical Association] is most grateful to those who contributed to the furnishing of the Jailer's Quarters. Especially appealing was the Mebane collection of handmade and decorated baby-garments and other age costumes as well. The most outstanding article shown in the Children's Room was Mrs. Mebane's flannel petticoat. Obviously it is a genuine antique because the owner, Edna Watkins Mebane, is 101.

Query whether his name really was Dee Gee Watkins or whether he was Daniel Gunn Watkins, Jr. and called "D. G." There was a Mr. D. G. Watkins who served in World War I, was poisoned by nerve gas (mustard gas), was thereby disabled, and lived on Main Street in Yanceyville in the 1950's with the John Lewis Satterfield, Jr. family. Whether this is the same person has not been confirmed, but it is likely. Note, however, that one source states that Dee Gee Watkins "luckily escaped [World War I] without being wounded or gassed."
