Of the nine children, the activities of Nancy, Solomon, and Caroline are still unknown, John returned to West Virginia, Thomas stayed in Arkansas, Ben, Susan and Robert all moved to California before or around 1900, and Sam stayed in Virginia and West Virginia until around 1900, when he moved to California.
        Samuel Martin Draper

Samuel (William F., Martin, Solomon Jr., Solomon Sr., Thomas) was born 26 Oct 1846 in Henry County, Virginia, Samuel married Nancy Leanna Eggleton (sometimes Eggleston) in either Henry County, Virginia, Franklin County, Virginia, or in Lincoln County, West Virginia, in the 1870s after his father William left Griffithsville for Texas around 1869. Nancy, born on 16 Dec 1854 in Henry County, Virginia, was the daughter of Alexander Eggleton and Martha Jane Goode, a younger sister of Samuel?s mother, Mary ?Polly? Goode Draper. The Eggletons comprised a huge and well-known family in Henry and Franklin County.

Samuel may have remained in West Virginia when his father left for Texas in 1869, but not for long. He returned to Henry County almost immediately where he bought land from the family of his future wife in 1873. In fact there is no evidence he ever left Henry County until he sold the land in 1876 and moved to West Virginia, but it is not known where he married Nancy. Samuel is not identified in the 1880 census so it is not known when he moved to West Virginia.

In 1870, Alex and Martha Eggleton are living in Brownsville, Franklin County, with Nancy, 16. In Henry County, Virginia, Samuel M. Draper was deeded land by Patrick Eggleton in 1873. In 1874 Samuel sold some of the land to Patrick?s sons, Alexander and George Eggleton. Patrick was Nancy?s uncle, and Alex and George were cousins. Samuel?s and Nancy?s first daughter, Zora, was born in 1874, but according to descendent Terry Alford, she was born in Griffithsville, West Virginia. In Samuel?s last recorded transaction in Henry County he deeded the last of his land to Benjamin F. Gravely in 1876.

Before or around the time of his father?s death in 1897, Sam moved to California and was found farming in the Downey area of Los Angeles County near his brother and mother in the 1900 Los Angeles County census. Samuel cannot be located in the 1880 census record, so his whereabouts between 1880 and 1900 are unidentified, except that his children were born in either Virginia or West Virginia between 1874 and 1897. He stays in the Downey area of Los Angeles County until sometime around 1930 when he is located in the Long Beach area of Los Angeles County.

Census records identify three sons and five daughters, and Terry Alford adds two more daughters married before the 1900 census.1 By 1910, his mother, Mary ?Polly? Goode Draper, is living with son Samuel. Samuel died sometime between 1930 and 1940, while Nancy died 3 Oct 1841 in Los Angeles County. According to Terry Alford, who is Samuel?s great great grandson, Samuel and daughter Zora were buried in West Virginia.1

        5. Benjamin L. (b. 9 Feb 1884, West Virginia; d. 31 Jan 1947, California)

        10. Samuel Thacker (b. 12 Jan 1897, West Virginia; d. 16 Oct 1962, California)

Abner J. Bird is identified as a son-in-law, but his wife?s name is not known. Edith Bird (b. 1901, West Virginia) is listed as Samuel?s granddaughter, living with him in 1910 without Abner. Abner J. Bird cannot be found in the 1910 census. Lottie M. Draper, born July 1881 in Virginia, is listed as Samuel?s daughter-in-law in the 1900 census, and the wife of Samuel?s oldest son, William.

William?s draft registration card shows he and Lottie were living in Artesia, Los Angeles County, California, in 1917, where he was a rancher. William is 39, with medium height, slender build, brown eyes, and dark hair.
