Dick Carter of CA on Carter Cousins - has accurate info on his ancestor Patriot Josiah of GA
3. THOMAS A.3 CARTER (THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Abt. 1742 in Goochland County, VA, and died 1807 in Elbert County, GA. He married (1) ELIZABETH STUBBS. He married (2) LUCY FARRIS 1774. She was born 1755, and died 1795.
Child of THOMAS CARTER and ELIZABETH STUBBS is:
i. THOMAS P.4 CARTER, m. LUCY HUDSON.
Children of THOMAS CARTER and LUCY FARRIS are:
ii. JAMES4 CARTER, m. LUCY MARTIN.
iii. THOMAS S. CARTER, m. (1) MARY SMITH; m. (2) MATILDA HARMON.
iv. NANCY M. CARTER, m. RICHARDSON HUNT.
v. FRANCES CARTER.
vi. GEORGE CARTER.
All of the following hinges on the bible of John W. Carter, known to be in the possession of Fay Carter Wade of Richmond VA. However ..... it is known that bibles sometimes carry false genealogy along with correct current info - one prime example: the bible of Mourning Carter of Kentucky on Capt. Geroge Carter of the Barford.
There is just no way of telling if the son of Thomas and Mary Kilpatrick simply headed to the Southwest corner of Virginia, or went all the way to Georgia.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The bible of son John W. Carter states Thomas instant a son of Mary Kilpatrick; however, common sense says this can NOT be the Thomas who married Doggett in Lancaster County! We will only relent on this if the bible says so - but even the Damron and Willoughby say Thomas and Mary headed west to Buckingham/Nelson, not north to Lancaster, not south to Mecklenberg. (We have developed a possibility for a Thomas born 1750 - for the 1771 marriage in Lancaster - grandson of Henry and Letticia Pullen Carter of Lancaster, grandson of Capt. Thomas Carter Sr. of Barford. This would then fit in rather nicely with the cousins in Lancaster who were involved in selling off to William Doggett before their removal to Pittsylvania Co VA).
Nelson County created in 1807 from Amherst - which was created from Buckingham. As always - this family may not have removed, just found themselves in a brand new county. The original and larger Buckingham was or course just west of Cumberland County, while Hanover is just northeast of Cumberland, across the James River. All in all, these are just minor shifts when compared to the alleged - and suspect - original removal from Goochland out to the isolated Lancaster County.
22. John W. Carter was born on 17 Jun 1778. He died on 22 Nov 1861. He was
married to Mary Smith Damron on 21 Oct 1805. [in Nelson Co VA]

10. Alfred Willoughby was born on 21 Jan 1807. He died before 1850. Alfred
left Nelson County, VA with his family and moved to Barbour County, WV in
early 1840's. Then later in 1850's he came back to his original home in
Nelson County, VA without his family. Alfred is said to have suffered a
stroke and lived the last 17 years of his life as an invalid. He is buried
in Johnson Cemetery, Dutch Creek, Elma, VA. He was married to Elizabeth

It just does not make sense, but there is consistent data from three different sources to say Thomas Carter m. Kilpatrick in Goochland and removed to Lancaster. And yet --- we know how even the DAR has been shnookered on many an occasion; who sez it was Thomas instant who married Elizabeth Griggs? * However, there is no known Thomas Carter born ca. 1753 unaccounted for from either the Barford or Corottomon Carters of Lancaster.
Thos Carter, 1753-1825, m 1771 Lanc. Co Posted by: Virginia Date: April 19, 2000:
Thomas Carter, born 1753 in Lancaster Co., Va, married 1771 Lanc. Co, and died 1825 in Hanover Co., Va. * Wife , Elizabeth Griggs, widow of George Doggett, listed on DAR Patriot Index as wife of Thos Carter, Pvt Va. And is listed on the Lancaster Co., Va Marriage Rolls married to Thos Carter 1771. They had at least one son, John born 1778, and possibly a son Edward born prior to 1776. A daughter is indicated by family records as born in 1787. A wife of Thomas died in 1799 when he was in late 40's, so possibly he married again. He was in Buckingham Co., Va Tax Records with son John in 1800 and lived another 25 years.
Just a Few Discrepancies???
1. How in blazes can you say which Thomas Carters was in any 1800 tax list?
2. Why would Thomas be all the way over in Buckingham in 1800 and die in Hanover??
3. There is a Thomas Carter Sr. and Jr. in the 1810 Lancaster census!
A) where there are no remaining Thomas Carters from the Barford,
b) and where there was the Pension application in Lancaster in 1818!
Posted by: Linda Fluharty Date: August 24, 1998 In Reply to: Thomas Carter.. Lancaster Co., VA by Linda Fluharty [sic - to herself] Linda lists this Thomas "of Lancaster" - to wit: Carter, Thomas m 21 Nov 1771 Elizabeth Doggett Sur William Griggs Lancaster Co Mar Bond
* Thomas Carter, son of Thomas - per Griggs below - consistent with next entry
"Have discovered Thomas in the DAR Patriot Index, b. 19 June 1753, d. 9 Feb 1825. Marriage Record in Early Virginia Marriages by Southern Book Co., 1953, lists marriage as 21 Nov 1771. A Family Bible of Thomas' son, John W. Carter, gives Thomas' parents as Thomas Carter and Mary Kilpatrick. Their [the parents] marriage is in the Douglas Register, page 14, indicating that the marriage was recorded on pages 21-26 of the Parish Register of Goochland begun ANNO 1756 by William Douglas, Minister. (Fay Parrish Wade of the Carter Society of Virginia has a transcription of this bible - below. Separately, Linda goes on to erroneously cite the will of Thomas of Mecklenburg for that of Thomas III instant).
Carter, Thomas, S40038, Cont Line (VA) applied 19 May 1818, Lancaster VA. -
Doesn't an application in Lancaster County in 1818 contradict all of the following,
or did you apply where you had enlisted?
Thomas Carter born 19 June 1753, Lancaster Cty, Va and died Feb 1825, Hanover Cty, Va. Married Elizabeth Doggett 21 Nov 1771. Had son John who married Mary Smith Dameron.
I have copies of notes from family Bible purchased by John W. Carter ca 1823-24. Includes chart from John W. Carter down to g-grson William Henry Carter who m Fannie Switzer. (Fay Parrish Wade)
The works of Mary Dameron-Wise s, as well as the Carter Family History show that Mary Smith Dameron must be the daughter of Michael and Lucy Dameron. She lived in Buckingham County, Virginia married John Carter and together they moved to Upshur County [WEST] Virginia.
This will was proved 14 Feb. 1749. Bell lists witnesses as John Thomas, John Thomas Jr.
This will is abstracted in "Notes from the Family Bible of John W. Carter," by Gladys M. Bloyd, 513 7th Street, Moundsville, W. Virginia, referring to the "Carters, Tapscotts, Damerons and Emersons." It is an account of the descendants of John W. Carter 1778-1861, son of Thomas Carter of Lancaster County, Va., and of Mary Smith Dameron of Nelson County, Va., his wife.
* GEORGE DOGGETT, son of Elmore and Lucy (Haydon) Doggett; m. ELIZABETH GRIGGS, dau. Of William Griggs. Elizabeth m(2) 1771, Lancaster Co., VA (Marr. Bond, 21 Nov), Thomas Carter, son of Thomas Carter, b. 19 Jun 1753, d. 9 Feb 1825.
Where in Blazes did the Griggs get these dates from?
1776: William Griggs bought the home of Jesse Carter and wife Mary, located on Corotoman River.
1790: William Griggs was appointed guardian for Elizabeth Daggett.
1796: William Griggs, guardian, gave permission & witness to marriage of Elizabeth Daggett to Thomas Carter.
This [first] wife died and Jesse Carter was married to Mary Chattin, prior to Dec. 6, 1760, when she joined him in a deed to William Griggs for their home place on Corotoman River when they were about to remove to Cumberland county. [Jesse Carter of Pittsylvania - son of Thomas III of Glouchester and Joanna Miller - son of Capt. Thomas Jr. of Barford]
It just would not make sense - and yet not beyond a possibility - for Thomas III and Kilpatrick to marry down in Goochland (on the James River) and have Thomas instant marry back up in Lancaster (on the Rappahannock) !?!?!? In all of our experience, one or two bible entries have proven to be questionable - but we can not imagine "false genealogy" as early as 1800!
To wit: ""Thomas Carter in Goochland married Mary Kilpatrick dau of Alexander Kilpatrick & Easley woman(you can find two sons birth date in Douglas Reg in Goochland. Mary's bro died in (I can remember right now) S.C. I think and in his WILL he Names Thomas Carter in Goochland & son Alexander Carter (Mary's Husband & son.)" [John Kilpatrick d.s.p. Dobbs County NC].
