He lived with his family at 672 Jefferson Avenue Danville, Va. from about 1918-1919 until his death in 1930, after which his family there resided until 1965-1966 when his widow, Mattie Edwards was incapacitated.

      Joseph Alpha Carter's eldest daughter, Thelma delivered her first child, September 2, 1930, a month after he died. The 10 lb little girl died at birth. Thelma, a gifted seamstress had her dressed in a christening dress she had made; held her daughter and said, "daddy wanted to see you".

      1870 VA CENSUS HH/FAM 167/168 shows William Carter 62, Betsy 58, Edward and Harriett George 20. This Richard age 67 appears to be the brother of William; however they are related (not known at this time 2011) Richard Carter age 59 shown in HH/FAM 359 is another Richard Carter who is distinguished by the middle initial "H.".

      George T. Carter had two wives. Susie Gravitt is found on the death certificate as the mother of Joseph Alpha Carter, Sr.. Both George and Susie are listed as having been from Halifax County, Virginia. Later investigation shows the marriage record as Martha S. Green.

      His second wife, Sallie Fanny Green is likely the sister of his first wife. In 1924 she inherits money from her uncle, John King Gravitt and the 4 children of Geo. T. Carter and Sue Green are listed as heirs in this will, as well. By 1930 George T. Carter is listed as widower on the census.

      Sue Green (Carter) is mentioned in the will of John King Gravitt and listed as deceased. Her children with George T. Carter are listed as heirs.

      I am glad to hear from you. As mentioned before I am the daughter of William Lee Carter born 1944. I have one brother Darryl William Carter born 1970 (I was born in 1965) My grandparents were Gilbert Thomas Carter

      Early ancestors of Louise Powell Butler
      My great-great-great-grandparents on my gg grandfathers' side were Mastin Powell and Mary called "Polly" Carter. He was a settler, tavern keeper, owener of a race track and slaves. They resided about 8 miles below Milton, NC on Powell Creek, Halifax Co., VA now Turberville. They had nine children:
      > Carter, 5/6/1800-10/26/1857, married Sarah Bates Moore,
      1/31/1804-10/21/1877, 6/22/1822; Elizabeth married Gerald Powell, her uncle, 12/24/1816;
      Biggers married Gillie Lipscomb, 6/16/1829;

      Nancy T. married Richard Carter;
      Mary Ann married Green Carter;
      William Jefferson married Elizabeth Allen Carter;
      Susan married Jackson "Jack" her nephew;
