    Generation: 1

    1. 1.  Ammi Ruhamah Faulkner was born on 20 Mar 1692/93 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts (son of Francis Faulkner and Abigail Dane); died on 04 Aug 1756 in Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts U.S.A..

      Notes:

He saved his mother's life because the Puritans dared not kill even a witch's innocent babe. His mother, Abigail DANE Faulkner, was convicted of being a witch in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and sentenced to death. She named him Ammi Ruhamah which means "My people have obtained mercy" or "mercy for my people".

Ammi married Hannah Ingalls on 07 Jun 1726 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. Hannah (daughter of James Ingalls and Hannah Abbott) was born on 02 Jan 1696/97 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 11 Jun 1781 in Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

      Notes:

They moved to Littleton by 12 Apr 1732 when thier second daughter, Abigail, was born. They also had two more sons there and then moved to Acton around 1742, and he was listed on the land records, as being a clothier. He also owned a mill in the south part of Acton. Their oldest son, Francis, was a Deacon in his church and a Lt. Co. in the Rev. War. He also served as Acton's Town Clerk from 1762-1796 and was the town's Representative to the Legislature from 1782-1785. He also served as a Court Justice or juror for several years, as well as holding many other town offices. Francis was half owner of the mill when his father, Ammiruhammah, died, and bought out his three brothers and two sister's shares when the will was probated.

      DICTIONARY, V. 2, P. 148, SAVAGE; BAILEY'S HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF ANDOVER, MA.

Francis married Abigail Dane on 08 Oct 1675 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. Abigail (daughter of Rev. Francis Dane and Elizabeth Ingalls) was born on 13 Oct 1652 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 05 Feb 1729/30 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

    2. 3.  Abigail Dane was born on 13 Oct 1652 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts (daughter of Rev. Francis Dane and Elizabeth Ingalls); died on 05 Feb 1729/30 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.

      Notes:

The Faulkners were a family of high position in the community of Andover. They were living on a farm in the north part of Andover. On 11 Aug 1692 she was arrested for afflicting Sarah Phelps of the Andover afflicted circle. She was tried and convicted as a witch on 17 Sep. of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. She was not executed as she was two months pregnant with her 7th child whom she named Ammi Ruhammah meaning "mercy for my people," when he was born in March 1693. Abigail's two daughters, Dorothy age 12 and Abigail Jr. age 9, were also accused of witchcraft, but were bailed out on 6 Oct 1692, when John Osgood and Nathaniel Dane posted a bond of L500. They were not tried in Jan., and remained free because of another L100 bond plsted on 13 Jan, by their father, and their uncle Joseph Marble. The girls were cleared by proclimation in May. In 1703, Abigail petitioned for a pardon, and on 20 Jul 1703, the House of Representatives replied favorably to her petition and those of others from Andover.

      Children:
      1. Elizabeth Faulkner was born on 04 Jul 1676 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 17 Aug 1678 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; was buried about 17 Aug 1678 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.
      2. Dorothy Faulkner was born on 15 Feb 1679/80 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.
      3. Frances Faulkner was born on 29 Apr 1686 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 07 Jan 1735/36.
      4. Edmund Faulkner was born on 02 Apr 1688 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.
      5. Paul Faulkner was born about 1690 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died in 1751.
      6. 1. Ammi Ruhamah Faulkner was born on 20 Mar 1692/93 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 04 Aug 1756 in Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Acton, Middlesex, Massachusetts U.S.A..

    Generation: 3

    1. 4.  Edmund Faulkner was born about 1620 in King's Cleere, Hampshire, England (son of Richard Faulkner); died on 18 Jan 1686/87 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; was buried in Old Burying Ground, North Andover, Massachusetts U.S.A..

      Notes:

Edmund was the immigrant ancestor, and was the ninth settler in order of their coming to Andover, MA. He was licensed in 1648 as the first innkeeper of the town. According to Charlotte Abbott's notes from the NAHS, he sold wine of his own manufacture in 1648 as a vintner not a retailer. She places his house, at that time, as being on the Ferry Road to Haverhill. The first license for a vintner and inn holder in Andover was issued to Edmund in 1662, so the road to the river must have been more of a highway then than it was when Charlotte Abbott wrote her notes. [no date on them]
He was one of the ten freeholders who organized the Andover church, 24 Oct 1645, and was one of the few men honored with the designation "Mr." in the records. He with Mr. Woodbridge, negotiated the purchase of the plantation from the Indians.
He took the oath of allegiance at Andover, 11 Feb 1678; was a selectman in 1674; town clerk 1675; and held other positions of honor. In King Philip's war in 1676 Indians attacked his house. Some of his animals were killed, but he and his family escaped. Since he was the town clerk at the time, the records were lost when his house was burned on 19 Apr 1676.
The land in Andover "was bought of CUTSHAMACHE, the sagamore of MA by Mr. Woodbridge, in behalf of ten inhabitants of Cochicheweck (now Andover). The amount paid was 6 pounds and a red coat. Mr. Edmund Faulkner might have assisted Mr. Woodbridge, as there is a tradition that he purchased the town for ten settlers". Abbott says, "according to the family the fee was 20 gallons of rum and the coat".

There is no gravestone, but a marker has been erected by some of his descendants. The cemetary is fairly close to where his land had been NW of the center of what is now North Andover.

Edmund married Dorothy Raymond. Dorothy was born about 1620 in England; died on 02 Dec 1668 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

    2. 5.  Dorothy Raymond was born about 1620 in England; died on 02 Dec 1668 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.

      Notes:

It is apparent that Dorothy was a widow when she married Edmund, as there was a Joseph Robinson named in Edmund's will, who was clearly not a son-in-law, as all of Edmunds sons and daughters were named also. Joseph Robinson died at Andover in 1719 at the age of about 74, so he was born about 1645, two years before Dorothy married Edmund. They were married in Salem, MA so she may have been from there. One source on Ancestry.com says that her surname was RAYMOND.

      Notes:

An entry in the Mass Transcript for May 23, 1923 states that Dorothy Robinson married by Governor Withrop, in Salem, on arrival from England to Edmond Fawlkner, Feb 1, 1647. first American citizen to be married. Will of EF speaks of stepson Joseph Robinson. He came with his mother, a child of about 4 years. Dorothy Robinson had to have come from Kings Linne, Norfolk, where there were Fawlkners. Will of Thomas Slayne of Kings Linne, Norfolk, gives, "To my youngest son, Samuel Slayne.... the pice of pasture ground in Torrington bought of Dorothy Robinson lately." Corresponding so closely to Dorothy's coming to America, this is interesting. According to the book, Pioneer of Mass. by Charles Henry Pope, Gen. Pub. County, 1981,

      Children:
      1. Mary Faulkner was born about 1649 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died in 1725 in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
      2. 2. Francis Faulkner was born in May 1651 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 19 Sep 1732 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; was buried in Old Burying Ground, North Andover, Massachusetts U.S.A..
      3. John Faulkner was born on 16 May 1654 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 17 Dec 1706 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.
      4. Hannah Faulkner was born on 08 May 1658 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 22 Feb 1697/98 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.

    3. 6.  Rev. Francis Dane was born on 20 Nov 1615 in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire, England (son of John Dane and Francis Bowyer); died on 17 Feb 1696/97 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.

      Notes:

Francis Dane's name is found among the early residents of Ipswich in 1641. He settled in Andover in 1648 and was pastor from 1649-1697, though he had no formal education for the ministry. He served as Andover's only minister until 1682. In that year the Rev Thomas Barnard of Hadley was appointed assistant minister. The Rev Dane continued to serve, now as senior minister, until his death at age 82, although after 1682, he only partially performed his duties due to failing health.

No single family had more members accused of witchcraft in 1692. In addition, many members of his extended family were also accused, including five members of the Howe family (his sister's family), nine members of the Allen family (his wife's sister's family), and ten members of the Dane family. All were imprisoned except one of the Howe family. One of the Howe family was hanged, as well as one of the Allen family. Another of the Allen family died in prison. Two of his own family, his daughter, Abigail Dane Faulkner and a grandaughter, were condemned, but not executed.
He was a man whose sound judgement and his courage remained unshaken by fear of personal danger during the time when the community was frenzied with the witchcraft delusion. One of his manifold afflictions at that time, when almost every member of his family was under arrest or suspision, he said, "The Lord give us all submissive will, and let the Lord do with me and mine what seems good in his eyes." (Bailey - Historical Sketches of Andover)
His father, John, was from that area.
The death record states: "The Revd Mr Francis Dane Teacher of the church of Andover died ye 17th Feb 1696-7 in the 82nd year of his age, having been a officer in ye church of Andover 48 yrs.

Francis married Elizabeth Ingalls before 1645 in Lynn, Essex, Massachusetts. Elizabeth (daughter of Edmund Ingalls and Ann Tripp) was born on 28 Feb 1618/19 in Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England; died on 09 Jun 1676 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

    4. 7.  Elizabeth Ingalls was born on 28 Feb 1618/19 in Skirbeck, Lincolnshire, England (daughter of Edmund Ingalls and Ann Tripp); died on 09 Jun 1676 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.

      Notes:

The Ingalls Gen. said she was born in 1622.

      Notes:

They had two sons, Nathaniel and Francis; and four daughters, Elizabeth (Johnson), Hannah (Goodhue), Phebe (Robinson) and Abigail.

      Children:
      1. Hannah Dane was born about 1645 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.

      6. Francis Dane was born on 08 Dec 1656 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 08 Nov 1738 in Andover, Essex, Massachusetts.

    Generation: 4

    1. 8.  Richard Faulkner died in in King's Cleere, Hampshire, England.

      Notes:

Most sources say that Richard is Edmund's father, but it seems to Diana Gale Matthiesen on her web page: http://dgmweb.net/7/NRoots/FGS/EdmundFaulkner-Dorothy_htm that "the one person who cannot be his father is Richard." According to her research, Francis FAWCONER of Kingscleare makes a bequest to his brother, Edmund FAWCONER "living in New England" and a bequest to his cousin Perter FAWCONER, son of Richard FAWCONER in his will of 1662. That would make Richard as Edmund's uncle (ie. his father's brother) and not his father.

Her web site is well documented and may have the best information on Edmund's father. [2 Jul 2001]
Francis Fawconer of Kingscleare Hants, gent., bequ. to my bro. Edmond Fawconer that is living in NE 200 li., in his will dated 1 Sept., 1662, prob., 21 May, 1663"

    2. 12.  John Dane was born about 1587 in Berkhampstead & Bishop's Stortford, Hert (son of William Dane); died on 14 Sep 1648 in Roxbury, Suffolk, Massachusetts.

      Notes:

He was a pioneer of Ipswich and Roxbury, MA, coming from Hertshire, England by 1641 when he was declared a freeman of MA. He had three children by his first wife. Arrived in Roxbury in 1636.

John married Francis Bowyer on 19 Oct 1605 in Colchester, Essex, England. Francis (daughter of Thomas Bowyer and Margaret) was born in 1590 in Dorchester, Dorset, England; died between 1636 and 1643 in Colchester, Essex, England. [Group Sheet]

    3. 13.  Francis Bowyer was born in 1590 in Dorchester, Dorset, England (daughter of Thomas Bowyer and Margaret); died between 1636 and 1643 in Colchester, Essex, England.

      Notes:

She may have been born in Colcester.

      Notes:

He came in Gov. Endicott's company. He and his brother, Francis, and four others began the settlement of Lynn in 1629. He was a man of good character even though the following court record is found "20/4/1646, Edmund Ingalls was fined for brining home sticks in both his arms on the Sabbath day from Mr. Holyokes rails, witness Joseph fflood, Obadya fflood, Jane fflood." These were probably jealous neighbors and it goes to show the strict observance of the Sabbath in those days. His name is often found on the town records showing him to be one of the prominent citizens.
