OBITUARY:
At McMinnville, Oregon, Tuesday, November 22, 1910, Samuel Matheney, age 83 years. The funeral was held yesterday at 1 o'clock from the undertaking parlors of Lehman & Clough, conducted by the Rev. P. S. Knight. Interment was made in the I. O. O. F. cemetery.

Samuel Matheny came to Willamette Valley in 1852. He farmed in the Red Hills area south of Salem near Roberts and later in Washington County. - Sameul P. Matheny Obituary, 1962.

Marker is in lot 397, next to marker for Samuel Matheny and 2nd wife Eva Eoline Matheny; IOOF Register of Burials - Mrs. Elmira Matheny, age 26 y's, 1 m, 3 d's, d. Marion County, "confinement" (childbirth), wife of Samuel Matheny.

In Amenia, Dutchess County, New York, he learned his father's trade of
wood working, the manufacture of spinning wheels and other wooden articles.
At the age of eighteen he began teaching school. He taught in dutchess,
Delaware, and Otsego Counties. He met and married Elmira Roberts in Otsego
County, New York and there their three older children were born. On
October 9,1839 the Lewis Hubbell Judson family, his sister Adelia and her
husband James Olley with forty-five other members of the "Great
Reenforcement" to the Oregon Methodist Mission, left New York harbor in the
Barque, Lausanne, for Oregon. They landed at Fort Vancouver on the Columbia
River in the Oregon Country on the first day of June 1840.

Judson was known as a versatile, if blunt and stubborn man. Judson and his first wife, Almira Roberts, had four children. Two years after Almira's death, in 1846, he married Nancy Hawkins. Lewis married Nancy Hawkins on 22 Feb 1846. Nancy (daughter of Henry Hawkins and Martha Crofton) was born about 1828 in Kentucky U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

Nancy petitioned the Oregon Territory Legislator to divorce Lewis on the grounds of abuse and non-support on 15.Nov.1858. The petition is in the Oregon State Archives, document number 11,813. The birth dates for her children come from this document.

as 103 years old in the margin.
!Permit Lee was first found in a tax record in Shenandoah Co. Virginia in the
late 1700's, abt 1785. He has a son, Permit Jr. getting married in Monroe Co,
VA which later became West VA. Next the family is found in Knox Co Tenn in a
tax record of abt 1805. The family then moves to Cumberland Co. Kentucky. with
several son-in-laws, appearing in the 1820 Federal Census. It is there that Permit is
listed as being 103 years old. Several Permit's are found in various states
from Knox Co. Tennessee, Knox Co. Kentucky to Ray Co. Missouri, in the various years
from 1830 through 1860 fed. census. It has been very difficult to determine
which Permit goes with what family and if the marriage found was a second wife
or another Permit. One or two Permit's are even found in Nauvoo, Hancock Co. Illinois in the 1840's, and two different spouses are listed.
The spouse identification continues to be the same problem for all the children
of Permit as well. For example, did the Samuel who married in VA, remarry in
Knox Co. Kentucky or was that two Samuels who were cousins. So the Family
group sheet as it sets is a summary of possibilities.

Newton Connecticut. Lewis Judson, following the occupation of his father
established his factory at Amenia Dutchess County, New York.
