    1. 1.  William Garrett "Will" Reynolds was born on 02 Apr 1811 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A. (son of John Devin Reynolds and Sarah Ann "Sally" Philpott); died on 28 Jan 1868 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A.; was buried in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A..

      Notes:

William Garrett Reynolds was a farmer, and a Baptist. He was a member of the Home Guards during the Civil War. He lived in Both Pittsylvania and Henry Counties, Virginia. His last place of residence was near Climax, Virginia.

William Garrett Reynolds was named for his maternal grandmother, Ann Garrett, mother of Sarah Ann Philpott.

William Garrett Reynolds published his last will and testament January 9, 1868 and died 19 days later.

William Garrett and his wife and children were charter members of Greenpond Baptist Church. It is said that they gave the wood for the first little church building. Their love for our Lord and service to Him are a treasured heritage.

Men of the community or adjoining communities would contest with each other in the skill of riding a horse at full tilt down a track and by means of a long lance, pick off rings suspended from poles by putting the lance through the rings. It was at such a meet that Johnson first met Mary Brumfield, who won his heart.

Oaths of Allegiance 1777 Pittsylvania County, Virginia
NOTE: Hugh Reynolds and his son Joseph are found on this 1777 list. Hugh's son William, is not. Joseph's Baptism of 15 Aug 1759 gives us his age. If William is the younger son, he may not have been of 'age' at this time. I suspect 16, may have been the age for boys to give their OATH. If so, we may suppose that William, s/o Hugh did not become of 'age' in 1777. William is shown on court records in 1788 when he inherits the land of his grandfather, William Neeley. Both Joseph and William are Qualified as Executors (Book 6/170 Pittsylvania Co., Virginia Court Records 1787-91)
Another record dated 22 Mar 1796 for William Reynolds and Charles Lewis must be our William, as the other William Reynolds of Culpepper has died in 1791. No connecton has been documented for William of Culpepper having any connection to the Hugh Reynolds family. -Mary Frances Reynolds

      Name:
Joseph Reynolds is identified as Joseph M. Reynolds on a pay document from the Revolutionary War. We speculate that his middle name is Middleton.
William Nealy left all the rest of his estate to Joseph who is probably the older brother of William Reynolds who inherited William Nealey's land.

Joseph married Margaret Devin on 21 Aug 1780 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A.. Margaret (daughter of William Devin, Sr. and Sarah Smith) was born about 1759; died about 1798 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A.; was buried in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

    1. 8.  Hugh ReynoldsHugh Reynolds was born about 1740 in Prob. Pennsylvania; died about 1810 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

      Notes:

3 Aug 1771 Va Patent Bk. 40 p. 551, Pittsylvania Co., Hugh Reynolds received patent for 298 acres on waters of Banister River adjoining land of Nealy & Roberts (Doc. 1140)

See Pittsylvania County, VA Landowners Per 1797 Land Tax: Transcribed by Mary Leigh Boisseau: Lists Hugh Reynolds as owing 2 parcels of land; the first, 105 acres and the second 65 acres. Also Lists Jesse Reynolds (s/o William) as owning 4 parcels of land 104 acres and 3 parcels of 50 acres each. Hugh Reynolds, father of Joseph and William, and husband of Mary Nealey Reynolds, is shown on the land tax records for Pittsylvania Co., VA until 1910. Jesse Reynolds, s/o a William Reynolds bought the land his father, William left to his brothers, Joseph and Richard Cole, in 50 acre parcels in 1794 after the death of this William in 1791.
This Jesse is the son of a William Reynolds who died in 1791, leaving a will naming his children. It is currently speculated by descendants of Jesse, that William Reynolds is Hugh's brother and a second William is a son of Hugh. Further research is being conducted.

Hugh married Mary Nealey on 30 Dec 1756 in Muddy Run, Martic, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania. Mary (daughter of William Nealey) was born about 1730; died after 1788 in Marlowe homeplace, Callands, Pittsylvania, Virginia U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

    2. 9.  Mary Nealey was born about 1730 (daughter of William Nealey); died after 1788 in Marlowe homeplace, Callands, Pittsylvania, Virginia U.S.A..

      Notes:

Several records show Mary to be born in Pittsylvania County Virginia. However, Pittsylvania county did not exist until 1767 and the earliest settlement of the area did not occur until 1738, so it is unlikely that Mary was born in the Pittsylvania County area.

It is possible that William Nealey (Mary's father) is the same William Neely in the 1757 tax list for Martic township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Along with Hugh Reynolds and William Divin.

      Birth:

Mary Neely (found spelled several ways) was the daughter of William Neely of Tomahawk Creek, VA (Callands). Hugh Reynolds bought his land adjacent to William Neely's and Married his daughter Mary. Their son's Joseph and William. Joseph married Margaret Devin and Nancy Ford.

      Died:
Her father's will (Wm. Neely) will was proved in 1788; both she and Hugh Reynolds were alive at that time.

      Notes:

      Married:
Mary married Hugh Reynolds at Wm. Neiley's, 30 Dec 1756 by Rev. John Cuthbertson at Muddy Run Meeting House. He later records the Baptism of son, Joseph on 15 Aug 1759.

Hugh Reynolds bought land in 1768 from and adjacent to William Nealey. And William Nealey's will dated 6 Dec 1787, leaves his estate to his daughter Mary Reynolds and his two grandsons Joseph & William Reynolds. The will was proved: 21 Jul 1788 and Security: Hugh Reynolds.

Nealey is found spelled several ways: Nealy, Neely, Nely, etc.

      Children:
      1. 4. Joseph M. Reynolds was born in 1759 in Muddy Run, Martic, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania; was christened on 15 Aug 1759 in Muddy Run, Martic, Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania; died about 1820 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A.; was buried in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A..
      2. William Reynolds was born in c 1760 in Probably Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania.

    3. 10.  William Devin, Sr. was born in 1724; died before 19 Apr 1802 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia U.S.A..

      Notes:

William Devin, Senior is considered to be the Progenitor of the protestant Devin family in the United States of America. William Devin, Senior of Virginia was born in Dublin, Ireland and came to America in 1745 or 1746. In 1750, he married Sarah Smith and settled in what is now Pittsylvania County, Virginia.
      --The Devin Family, page 1.

CJR says William Devin (father of William Jr. and Alexander) came from Alsace Lorraine, France. --Email 25 February 1998.

A William Davin along with son James Davin is listed in the 1767 list of Tithables for Pittsylvania County, Virginia Colony.

Like many landowners of the era and region, William Devin Senior owned slaves. His will states that he owned at least one male slave, named Alleck, which he bequeathed to his daughter Sarah Devin.
      -The Devin Family, page 2.

William Sr. served as Sergeant of Infantry, Virginia Continental Line. He "received a certificate for balance of full pay, according to act passed November session 1781". [more likely this was his son William Jr.]

      Comments:

Dessa's booklet mentions a letter to Alfred Harrison Devin written by Rev. Robert Ira Devin son of James, son of William Jr, son of William Sr. The letter is said to make the following statements: 'William Devin born 1724.'"

These statements may be accurate, but Dessa's booklet, as written, seems to relate that these records have Irish origins. There is a Camden Parish in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. If the referenced records are from the Virginia parish, why do they mention the marriage of William and Martha Devin? Is the Sarah Devin mentioned in the records actually William Sr.'s spouse rather than his sister? Another theory is that the William and Martha Devin mentioned in the parish of Camden records is William Devin and Martha Mitchell and the 2 in 1720 is actually an eight.

William married Sarah Smith in 1750. Sarah (daughter of Thomas Smith) was born on 20 Mar 1727/28; died before 22 Nov 1800. [Group Sheet]

Dessa's booklet mentions a letter to Alfred Harrison Devin written by Rev. Robert Ira Devin son of James, son of William Jr, son of William Sr. The letter is said to make the following statements: "Records of the Parish of Camden: 'Sarah Devin born March 20, 1728.'"

Smith surname assumed based on serveral grandchildren named 'Sarah Smith _____'. No documents have been found to support her last name except for a manuscript by Dessa Hoffstetter. However, its source is suspect.

      Notes:

Possibly married in Virginia Colony or Pennsylvania Colony.(speculation)

They had eleven children; some dying in childhood. Their four oldest sons fought in and survived the Revolutionary War. (Hofstetter, Dessa; The Devin Family; page1)
