Darwin and Olivia moved to WI around 1852 after selling their land in Mount Holly, VT. They went to Waushara Co. where they were living at the time of the Civil War.
Darwin was in the 18th WI Volunteers in the Civil War, enlisting at 43 years of age on 18 Dec 1861 at Berlin, WI for a three year term. He gave his residence as Poysippi, Waushara County, WI. He was mustered into the military service of the United States on 22 Jan 1862 by Capt Trowbridge at Milwaukee, WI according to his Certificate of Service, issued by the State Historical Society of WI. The 18th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trowbridge, Milwaulkee, and mustered into the US Service on 15 Mar 1862. The regiment left WI for St. Louis on 30 Mar, then went to Pittsburg landing, TN on 31 Mar. On 5 Apr. the regiment was attached to the 2nd Brigade, 6th Division, Army of the Tennessee to Jul 1862 The next day he was wounded and captured in the Battle of Shiloh and taken to an Alabama prison camp. He was later released, but had contracted Typhoid. He was taken to St Louis, MO where he died in the military hospital there.
He was buried in the military cemetary there, according to his CW Pension papers.
According to his Certificate of Service issued by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin: "Private White was reported missing in action on April 6, 1862 at the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. A special report, dated October 29, 1862 states he was a prisoner of war. In December 1862 he was reported dead by a Surgeon of the St. Louis , Missouri General Hospital. An inventory of effects and final statement report indicates Private White died on the 16th day of July, 1862, at St Louis, Missouri, due to typhoid fever. The Roll of Honor, Volume 20, page 390, shows he is buried in the cemetary at Jefferson Barracks, Missoure. He is buried in Section 11, Grave 10, having been removed from the Wesleyan Cemetary at St. Louis." Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary is located at 2900 Sheridan Road, St. Louis Missoure 63125. This is supposed to be a beautiful cemetary according to a national genealogist who wrote about this cemetary in a computer on-line article.

This White family can be traced to the "Mayflower."

Darwin married Olivia Patch on 17 Mar 1846 in Wallingford, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.. Olivia (daughter of Edmund Patch and Philomela Lawrence) was born in 1824 in Wallingford, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; died on 06 May 1879 in Auroraville, Waushara, Wisconsin U.S.A.; was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Aurora, Wisconsin U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

    2. 3.  Olivia PatchOlivia Patch was born in 1824 in Wallingford, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A. (daughter of Edmund Patch and Philomela Lawrence); died on 06 May 1879 in Auroraville, Waushara, Wisconsin U.S.A.; was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Aurora, Wisconsin U.S.A..

      Notes:

Olivia was already a 7th generation descendant of Nicholas Patch who came from South Pertherton, England to Beverley, MA about 1630. Her mother was Philomela Lawrence and her 4th great-grandfather was John Lawrence, one of the original settlers of Groton, MA. The Lawrence line has been traced back to Sir Robert Lawrence of Ashton, Lancastershire, England, who was companion-in-arms to Richard the Lion Hearted during one of the Crusades. He was made a knight in 1191 for his bravery in scaling the walls of Acre. Many of Olivia's ancestors were among the earliest settlers of Groton, Chelmsford, Watertown, Rowley, Littleton, Andover and Haverhill, MA. Her father's mother, Mary Hazen, was the great, great, great grandaughter of John Nutting, who was killed in the Indian raid of 1667 at Groton, MA. He was one of the original settlers of Groton. The Hazens were early settlers of Rowley. The Lawrences were among the earliest settlers of Watertown before Groton. The Nuttings were early settlers of Chelmsford and then Groton. Some of their wives came from families of the earliest settlers of surrounding towns.
Olivia married Nathan Cate after Darwin's death, and received a Civil War Pension to support Darwin's 5 children until each was 18 years old. They continued to live in Auroraville, WI and both are buried in Pine Grove Cem, 1 mi NW of Auroraville.
Her birth record has not been found,.Her three brothers were all born at Groton, MA in 1808, 1810 and 1816; and her two sisters were born in Tyngsborough, MA in 1812 and 1814 according to the Groton Vital Records. The Edmund Patch family was in Wallingford, Rutland County, VT in 1820 and in Mount Holly by 1830.

census for 1820 and 1830 Rutland County, VT

      Notes:

They were married in Wallingford, which is just west of Belmont (formerly Mechanicville) which is in the west side of Mount Holly township. There is a church still in Wallingford, as of late Oct 1996, which could have been where they were married. The Whites were living in the Belmont area, but it has not been determined where the Patches were living. There were some Patch families in the Ludlow area, just east of Mount Holly, township. Some of this White family lived in that area also, along with some unrelated White families.

      Children:
      1. Asa Bradley White was born on 08 Mar 1847 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; died after 1895 in Wood County, Wisconsin U.S.A..
      2. Wilmer White was born on 09 Jul 1850 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; died on 06 Nov 1884 in Pittsville, Wood, Wisconsin U.S.A.; was buried in Founder's Cemetery, Pittsville, Wood, Wisconsin U.S.A..
      3. Dalena Eva White was born on 08 May 1852 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; died on 01 Jul 1928 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz, California U.S.A..
      4. Mary Abigail White was born on 29 Mar 1855 in Auroraville, Waushara, Wisconsin U.S.A.; died on 21 Sep 1933 in Houston, Harris, Texas U.S.A..
      5. 1. LuLu Olivia White was born on 10 May 1858 in Poysippi, Waushara Wisconsin U.S.A.; died in in California U.S.A..

    Generation: 3

    1. 4.  Asa White was born on 7 Feb 1786 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts (son of Asa White and Sarah Moors); died on 14 Aug 1844 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Mechanicsville Old Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..

      Notes:

There were 2 Asa Whites in Mount Holly during this time period. The other Asa was a few years older and went by Asa 1st on many of the records. The latter moved to Ludlow, VT which is just east of Mount Holly by 1814. Asa 2 may have joined the Baptist Church, which was organized in 1804 in Mount Holly, as there is a record of an Asa White, along with a John and Francis (his brothers?), buying pews there in 1820, in a History of Mount Holly, VT. Asa 2 is also known as Deacon Asa in some of the records.

He was born shortly before his parents moved to VT. His two brothers and two sisters were born in Hartland, Windsor County, Vt before the family moved to Mount Holly around March 1795.

Asa married Amarilla Peck in abt. 1806 in Vermont U.S.A.. Amarilla (daughter of Elijah Peck and Sarah Bradley) was born on 10 Jan 1784 in Hamden, New Haven, Connecticut; died on 08 May 1856 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Mechanicsville Old Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

    2. 5.  Amarilla Peck was born on 10 Jan 1784 in Hamden, New Haven, Connecticut (daughter of Elijah Peck and Sarah Bradley); died on 08 May 1856 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Mechanicsville Old Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..

      Notes:

Amarilla was the daughter of Elijah Peck and Sarah Bradley. They had moved to Mount Holly from New Haven, CT and Elijah continued his work as a blacksmith. Amarilla's gr, gr, gr-grandfather, Henry Peck, was one of the original settlers of New Haven, CT coming there by June 1639 from England. Many of her other ancestors were also among the earliest settlers of New Haven Colony, also coming from England in the 1630s.

In some histories, Amarilla is listed as being born in Cheshire which is also in New Haven County, CT.

      Notes:

There was a Dan Peck who was active in the Mount Holly Congregational Church , trying to keep it together after the minister left, until he himself left, about 1851. Dan Peck may have been a relative of Amarilla's. Or they may have been married in the Baptist Church. The records don't say.
No maarrriage record has been found in the Mount Holly records. The date is approximate, based on about a year before the birth of their first child.

possibly married in the Mount Holly Congregational Church or Baptist Church.

      Children:

    3. 6.  Edmund Patch was born on 24 Feb 1786 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts (son of Jacob Patch and Mary Hazen); died before 1850 in Vermont U.S.A..

      Notes:

Edmund was in the Mount Holly area in 1840 according to the census, but not on the 1850 one. His son, Edmund, is in Leon, NY in 1850 and 1860, but Edmund, Sr. was not there on either census, nor was Philomela.

      1830 & 1840 & 1850 Mount Holly, VT
      1850 & 1860 Leon, NY

Edmund married Philomela Lawrence on 24 Dec 1807 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts U.S.A.. Philomela (daughter of Rowland Lawrence and Mahala Worcester) was born in 1786 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died between 1840 and 1850. [Group Sheet]

    4. 7.  Philomela Lawrence was born in 1786 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts (daughter of Rowland Lawrence and Mahala Worcester); died between 1840 and 1850.

      Notes:

There is a woman recorded on the Mount Holly 1840 census living in the Edmund Patch household who was Philomelia's age. Since Edmund probably died in VT, Philomela probably did too.[maryabbywhite.ged]

      Notes:

Edmund and Philomela had six children: three boys and three girls. They may have had others between Jesse who was born in Groton in 1816 and Olivia who was born about 1824 according to her age at her death in WI.[maryabbywhite.ged]

      Children:
      1. 3. Olivia Patch was born in 1824 in Wallingford, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; died on 06 May 1879 in Auroraville, Waushara, Wisconsin U.S.A.; was buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, Aurora, Wisconsin U.S.A..

    Generation: 4

    1. 8.  Asa White was born on 08 Jan 1760 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts U.S.A. (son of Thomas White and Hannah Faulkner); died on 20 Jun 1795 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..

      Notes:

Asa was a soldier in the Rev War and served as a drummer in the Battle of Bunker Hill at age 16. He had been a Minuteman and had previously marched with his unit from Groton, Ma to Cambridge during the Battle of Lexington-Concord on 19 Apr 1775. He also served as a private for several months after Bunker Hill. He served again as a drummer for 4 months in 1778 and then enlisted in the Spring of 1781 for 3 yrs and served until end of the War part of the time as a private and part as a corporal. Asa, Sarah, and Asa, Jr. then moved to Hartland, VT by 1788, where the other 4 children were born. He was probably trying to find a way to provide for his family as the economy was very poor after the war. There was no land to inherit from his father, and he was a 4th son besides. He probably worked in Hartland, Vt (about 50 miles NW of Groton, and along the Conneticut River) until he could save enough money to buy land somewhere. Asa, Sr. bought land in Mount Holly, VT in Nov 1794 and again in Mar 1795. He bought 60 acres each time. The land was in the area west of Mount Holly and near the foothills of the Green Mountains. They had just moved there when he died, leaving Sarah with 5 small children. He may have died in an accident while clearing his new land as happened quite often. It seems unlikely that he would have moved his wife and 5 young children, if he were suffering from an illness that would cause his death in 3 months.
On 3 Jan 1797, Sarah White, widow, was appointed guardian of Asa, John, Sally, Polly, and Francis White, heirs to the estate of Asa White with Jonas Hadley as Executor. The estate was fianlly settled in 1810, with John White as administrator and all but Francis, would have been at least 18, and were able to sign.

Asa married Sarah Moors on 7 Jan 1785 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Sarah (daughter of Timothy Moors and Lydia Nutting) was born on 19 Nov 1759 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died on 30 Dec 1846 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Packer Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A... [Group Sheet]

    2. 9.  Sarah Moors was born on 19 Nov 1759 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts (daughter of Timothy Moors and Lydia Nutting); died on 30 Dec 1846 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Packer Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A...

      Notes:

Sarah married Jonah Ives in 1797, and had 2 more children. Apparently, none of her children provided for her, after her second husband died, as she was a Town Charge of Mount Holly, VT in the 1830s. She had quit-claimed her dower rights (1/3 of the husband's Estate) to her oldest son by Jonah Ives, after Jonah, Sr died in 1824. She may have also quit-claimed her dowery rights to her children by Asa White earlier. Usually when dower rights were quit-claimed to a child, the child was to provide for the parent for the rest of their life. Apparantly Jonah Ives did not keep his signed contract to do so. He probably moved to the State of NY. She was finally able to claim a pension on Asa White's Revolutionary War service in mid 1846, with three of their children's help, but she died about six month's later at the age of 87.
Sarah's great, great-grandfather on her mother's side was John Nutting, Sr., one of the original settlers of Groton, MA. He was killed by the Indians in 1676, when Groton was burned during King Phillip's War. His house was one of the 4 houses where the settlers could take refuge in case of attack. The Indians burned the whole town, but the women and children managed to escape. Groton wasn't resettled for two years after the attack in 1676. Sarah was the 8th child of 10, all born in Groton. She had 4 older sisters, 2 older brothers, and 2 younger sisters.
Some of her other ancesters were among the earliest settlers of Andover, Cambridge, Watertown and Chelmsford; all in MA.

Buried w/ 2nd husband Jonah Ives, Packer Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland County, VT

      Notes:

They moved to Hartland, VT sometime just after their son Asa was born in March 1786. Their other four chilldren were born in Hartland. They probably went north to Vermont for a better opportunty to obtain land. The economy was in chaos just after the Revolutionary War, and many went north to Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Asa's father had already sold all his land, and didn't have any property to leave to any of his sons.

      Children:
      1. 4. Asa White was born on 7 Feb 1786 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died on 14 Aug 1844 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Mechanicsville Old Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..
      2. John White was born on 11 Sep 1788 in Hartland, Windsor, Vermont; died on 06 Jan 1852 in Ludlow, Windsor, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Packer Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A...
      3. Sally White was born on 28 Jul 1790 in Hartland, Windsor, Vermont; died on 14 Jan 1867 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..
      4. Polly White was born on 24 Apr 1792 in Hartland, Windsor, Vermont.
      5. Francis White was born on 25 Jul 1794 in Hartland, Windsor, Vermont U.S.A.; died after 15 May 1868 in Vermont U.S.A..

    3. 10.  Elijah Peck was born on 12 Apr 1755 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut (son of Amos Peck and Elizabeth Leek); died on 12 Feb 1805 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..

      Notes:

He was a blacksmith at Mount Holly, VT. Vol I of the Land Records for Mount Holly says that "Elijah Peck of Ashford, County of Windham State of Conneticutt" sold land in Mount Holly on 3 Oct 1801. (Mount Holly was formed from a gore and part of Wallingford and Ludlow in 1792, and earlier records can't be found for Mount Holly.) On 15 Sep 1804, Job Peck (Elijah's oldest son) sold land to Elijah Peck and both were of Mount Holly.

[The land record information was sent by Carroll R. Tarbell, Mount Holly Town Clerk, on 6 Dec 1977 to Dorothea Heid. Mr. Tarbell has written a town history of Mount Holly which Marg McEuen purchased in 1992, shortly after Mr. Tarbell's death.]
One source says he died 19 Feb 1805. This may have meant that he was buried then.

Elijah married Sarah Bradley on 10 Apr 1781 in Cheshire, New Haven, Connecticut. Sarah (daughter of Jabez Bradley and Esther Beach) was born on 29 Nov 1760 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut; died in in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

    4. 11.  Sarah Bradley was born on 29 Nov 1760 in New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut (daughter of Jabez Bradley and Esther Beach); died in in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..

      Notes:

On 7 Feb 1799, Amarilla's mother, Sarah BRADLEY Peck, bought land in Mount Holly. At that time she was of Hamden, New Haven County, CT.

      Notes:

maryabbywhite.FTW] Elijah and Sarah had nine children: three boys and six girls. Two of their daughters, Lue and Harriet, also died in 1805, the same year as their parents and are buried with them in the Old Mechanicsville Cemetary.

      Children:
      1. 5. Amarilla Peck was born on 10 Jan 1784 in Hamden, New Haven, Connecticut; died on 08 May 1856 in Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A.; was buried in Mechanicsville Old Cemetery, Mount Holly, Rutland, Vermont U.S.A..

    5. 12.  Jacob Patch was born on 05 Apr 1747 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts (son of Ebenezer Patch and Sarah Wright); died on 22 Dec 1818 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts U.S.A..

      Notes:

Served as a private in Capt. Warrens Co. Brooks Regiment. His brother, 10/31/1776. Jacob carried his wounded brother by horse litter some 200 (rest of note lost). Jacob's sudden death was caused by the wheels of a loaded wagon going over his body and was found dying about 15 minutes after the accident by his son Zara.

This is most likely the Jacob in Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patiots, Vol. 3, Serial 11912, Volume 4 in unknown cem in Groton MA (55). Also the one in Massachusetts Army & Navy, the Revolution, 17 Vols, Volume 11, Patch, Jaco****, Groton.Corporal, Capt. Josiah Sartell's co., which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775, to headquarters at Cambridge; service, 15 days; also, Private, Capt. Thomas Warrin's co., Col. Brooks's regt.; company return dated Oct. 31, 1776, and endorsed “White Plains;” reported as having been sent with the wounded.

      An alternate listing give b. 11 Jul 1749, d. 31 Dec 1776.

A questionable listing also included an additional child, Sally.

Jacob married Mary Hazen on 09 Jan 1772 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. Mary (daughter of Benjamin Hazen and Betty Nutting) was born on 28 Apr 1743 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts; died on 28 Aug 1828 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

    6. 13.  Mary Hazen was born on 28 Apr 1743 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts (daughter of Benjamin Hazen and Betty Nutting); died on 28 Aug 1828 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

      Notes:

      [maryabwhiteanc.ged]
