Lillian (daughter of Robert Thomas Edwards and Elizabeth Francis) was born on 19 Jan 1896 in Halifax County, Virginia U.S.A.; died on 22 Mar 1969 in Henry Co., Virginia; was buried in Olive Branch United Methodist Church, hwy. 699 near Turbeville.. I am glad to hear from you. As mentioned before I am the daughter of William Lee Carter born 1944. I have one brother Darryl William Carter, born 1970 (I was born in 1965) My grandparents were Gilbert Thomas Carter, (1905-1998) and Edna Booker Hall Carter. All of us was born in Halifax
County VA. Gilbert T was born in Mt Carmel Va near Turbeville Va. My Papa Gilbert was the son of William Green Sr. and Mary E Powell Carter (1874 -1965) Wiiliam Green Carter Sr and wife are buried at Olive Branch United Methodist Church in Mt Carmel. George T. Carter (father of William G. Sr). and Sallie F. are also buried there.

William married Mary Elizabeth Powell in c 1892 in Halifax County, Virginia U.S.A.. Mary was born on 11 Oct 1874 in Halifax County, Virginia U.S.A.; died on 3 Jan 1965 in Halifax County, Virginia U.S.A.; was buried in Olive Branch United Methodist Church, hwy. 699 near Turbeville.. [Group Sheet]

1860 VA Census Halifax Mt Carmel District shows William Carter 53, HH/Fam 778/759 Elizabeth, 48 (From North Carolina) Martha 17, Mary 16, Edward 12, George 10.
1870 VA Census Halifax Mt. Carmel District shows William Carter 62, HH/FAM 167/168 Betsy 58, Richard 67 (William's Brother) Edward 21, Harriett 16, George T. 20;
1880 Census Halifax Mt. Carmel District shows William 72, Elizabeth 66, next door to George 25, (He is 30) Martha 25, Wm. 7, Joe 5, James 4, Martha 2 George 10/12 (July)
The 1910 VA Census shows George T. Carter and Sally Fannie Green have been married 25 years have 7 children, 6 of which are living. George and Sally Fannie live beside two of their sons and their families.

1870 VA CENSUS HH/FAM 167/168 shows William Carter 62, Betsy 58, Edward and Harriett George 20. This Richard age 67 appears to be the brother of William; however they are related (not known at this time 2011) Richard Carter age 59 shown in HH/FAM 359 is another Richard Carter who is distinguished by the middle initial "H.".

Obit found: His name is George Turner Carter. He is named per the tradition of the time. George for his father, William George 'Buck' Carter and Turner for his mother's maiden name, Elizabeth Patience 'Betsy' Turner.

George married Martha Sue Green on 4 Jan 1872 in Mt. Carmel District, Halifax, Virginia U.S.A.. Martha (daughter of James A. P. Green and Martha Gravitt) was born in c 1855 in Halifax County, Virginia U.S.A.; died before 1885 in Halifax County, Virginia U.S.A.. [Group Sheet]

George T. Carter had two wives. Susie Gravitt is found on the death certificate as the mother of Joseph Alpha Carter, Sr.. Both George and Susie are listed as having been from Halifax County, Virginia. Later investigation shows the marriage record as Martha S. Green.

His second wife, Sallie Fanny Green is likely the sister of his first wife. In 1924 she inherits money from her uncle, John King Gravitt and the 4 children of Geo. T. Carter and Sue Green are listed as heirs in this will, as well. By 1930 George T. Carter is listed as widower on the census.

Sue Green (Carter) is mentioned in the will of John King Gravitt and listed as deceased. Her children with George T. Carter are listed as heirs.

United Methodist Church in Mt Carmel. George T Carter (father of William G. Sr). and Sallie F.are also buried there. Have you been there? I am trying
to get more info. on their life --I know they were farmers and I believe William G Sr. owned a store for awhile. I will see what I have for Susie but I Have spent more time on Sallie F and her line. Was Susie's name Martha Green? If so she may have been Sallie F's sister. I know she had a
sister named Martha. If so you are going to be excited with your find I know I was living in Halifax Co. I have to look at my info and email you back with Sallie F's father and mother then maybe you can search a line. William Leigh Green (1832 and Susan H Gravitt (1832-1860) and they did have a daughter named Martha.

Martha Sue Green married George T. Carter in 1872. She is the daughter of Martha Gravitt and James Green. Martha Gravitt is the sister of John King Gravitt and William James Gravitt who married the Woody sisters. Sue is mentioned in the Will of John King Gravitt.

Susie Gravitt is listed as mother on the death certificate for her son Joseph Alpha Carter, Sr. Susie is later found to be Susie Green (on her marriage license to George T. Carter) Her mother is Susan Gravitt (William Green father).

Addison Lafayette Edwards, it appears is the second husband of Sarah Frances Powell. 1850 Census record shows his brother William T. Edwards in the household of his wife, Sarah Frances and her grandmother, Polly Carter Powell. My mother relayed to me before her death that her grandfather was Addison Lafayette Edwards, born according to his headstone, in 1845. I recently found a marriage record for Sarah Frances and William T. Edwards, who is the brother of Addison. His wife, Sarah Frances Powell, d/o William Jefferson Powell and Elizabeth Allen Carter was probably married to both brothers; Addison being at least 5 years younger than his wife. Addison and Sarah were married until his death in 1892. My grandmother, Mattie Frances Edwards, was the 5th child of Sarah, born in 1876. -Mary Frances Eggleston

HH/FAM 771/752 shows James 28, family He is s/o James, brother of Addison married to Elizabeth 25, with children ? 6, Doll 5, Patrick 3 and Ellen l.

HH/FAM 858/841 John Edwards 58 (Brother of James Ann E. 42, Josephine 19, Emma 18, Richa(rd) 17, Mo A. 15, C.S. 12.

Addison was captured at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863 and held as a prisoner of war at Fort McHenry, Ft. Delaware, and Point Lookout, Maryland. He was apparently exchanged as he rejoined his company until December 7, 1863. Addison was captured again at Five Forks on April 1, 1865. He was held as a prisoner of war at City Point (Hopewell, Virginia) until transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland where he took the Oath of Allegiance and was released on June 11, 1865.
