Notes:

Edward and his wife Joan were received into the church in Rowley on 26 Jul 1691. They removed to Boxford, probably after his brother Thomas went to Norwich, CT, which was about 1685. Edward's eight children were born in Rowley, the last beig baptised there in Jan 1704, so they must not have removed to Boxford until then.

Edward married Jane Pickard on 16 Nov 1694 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts. Jane (daughter of John Pickard and Jane Crosby) was born on 22 Apr 1666 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts; died after 1748 in Boxford, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

They had eight children who were all born in Rowley: Jane, Edward, John, Benjamin & Hephzibah (twins), Samuel, Israel, and Hannah.

1. Benjamin Hazen was born on 17 Feb 1694/95 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts; died on 18 Sep 1755 in Groton, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

Notes:

He was the immigrant ancestor. The first mention of his name occurs in the records of Rowley, MA when his wife, Elizabeth died. He was a man of substance and influence in the town and become overseer or Selectman in 1650, 51, 54, 60, 61, 65, and 1668. He was Judge of delinquents in 1666. In the records of surveys done on 4 Feb 1661 he appears entitled to "seven gates". These related to cattle rights on the town commons. The average number allotted was three and no one had more than seven.
The inventory amounted to L404 : 7 : 8.

Edward married Hannah Grant in Mar 1649/50 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts. Hannah (daughter of Thomas Grant and Jane Haburne) was born about Oct 1631 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England; died in Feb 1715/16 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

They had ten other children besides Edward, who was the fifth child and third son. They were Elizabeth, Hannah, John, Thomas, Isabell, Priceslla, Edney, Richard, Hiphzebeth, and Sarah. They were all born in Rowley.

He removed to Grasby, Lincolnshire, between 1617 and 1619. In 1619 Thomas Wright and Thomas Hassen were churchwardens of Grasby.

Thomas married Elizabeth about 1610 in Grasby, Lincolnshire, England. Elizabeth was born in 1582 in Cadney, Lincolnshire, England; died about 07 Apr 1647 in South Kelsey, Lincolnshire, England. [Group Sheet]

They left England shortly after the baptism of their youngest child, Anna, in Dec 1637, for they were in New England before Jan 1639. At that date, William Stickney was admitted into the First Church of Boston, and in 1698 Samuel Stickney of Bradford, MA, son of William deposed that he "came over from England to New England in the same ship with Thomas and Jane Grant his wife, who brought with them foure Children, by name John, Hannah, Frances, & Ann..." Of their four children, John died without issue; Frances married, at Newbury, MA 2 Oct 1653, Solomon Keyes, and they soon moved to Chelmsford, MA; and Ann married, at Rowley, 4 Jan 1658, Robert Emerson of Haverhill.
The author of "The Hazen Family in America" long believed that Thomas Grant, the immigrant father of Hannah, who also married and had children recorded at Cottingham, was another son of John, and that belief is confirmed by the discovery of the baptism at Hessle of four children of John Grant, the first of whom was named Thomas. The last child of John recorded at Cottingham was in 1598, and the first child of John recorded in Hessle was about 2 1/2 years later. Many family names were given in the next generation also. Although lacking in confirmation by will, these considerations and the relative rarity of the Grant surname in this region, warrent the identification of John of Cottingham with John of Hessle, though do not prove it.
There is nio record of his death, but he came from England in 1638 and his wife, Jane, was listed in town records as being a widow in 1643.

Thomas married Jane Haburne on 21 Sep 1624 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England. Jane (daughter of Ralph Haburne and Maude Jecles) was born about Oct 1602 in Cottingham, Yorkshire, England; died on 16 Feb 1695/96 in Rowley, Essex, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet]

John married Elizabeth about 1570 in Cadney, Lincolnshire, England. Elizabeth was born in 1549 in Dorchester, Dorset, England; died about 4 Feb 1630/31 in Cadney, Lincolnshire, England. [Group Sheet]

It is not certain, but is probable that the John Grant who lived in Cotttingham moved to Hessle between 1598 and 1600.
