George Holdeman was married February 18, 1836 in Wayne County, Ohio to Anna Eicher, born October 22, 1818 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Daniel and Mary M. (Stuckschleger) Eicher. She had come with her parents to Wayne County, Ohio, and was reared on a farm which was the northeast quarter of section nineteen in Congress Township, in which township they lived during the first several years after their marriage.

George Holdeman became a school teacher and taught one-third of the winter term of 1839 and 1840 at the old log school house of district No. Six in Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio. The following facts concerning the teaching career of George Holdeman in Ohio were taken from Chester Township records: " George Holdeman taught the winter term of school 1844 and 1845 in District No. Two which was the next district due north of District No. Six, and known to-day as Science Point District by the same number, and that on March 12, 1845 was paid $45.50 for his services, and the winter of 1846 and 1847 George Holdeman taught the school of District No. Eleven, today kown as Red Swamp, and on March 22, 1847 drew $52.00 for his wages. The following winter, 1847 and 1848, he again taught in District No. Two and on march 16, 1848 he was paid $52.00. (Harvey S. Rutt, "History of Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio, P 26.)

On November 20, 1839, George Holdeman and wife bought from Simon Vanosdal a forty acre tract of land, which was the south one-half of the south half of the southeast quarter of section five in Chester Township. This land was sold on September 2, 1848, twenty acres to Isaac Young and twenty to Susannah Cook.

In the year 1848 George Holdeman and family came to Elkhart County, Indiana, and lived during the first year in Elkhart Township, in which township the Frederick Landis family had settled. They had seven children at this time. They then moved to Olive Township and purchased from the government September 2, 1849 the forty acres of the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section thirty-five of township thirty-six (Olive); this tract was sold for sixty dollars to Susannah Miller July 30, 1850. On May 13, 1850, George and Anna Holdeman bought from Henry Yoder of Mahoning County, Ohio, for five hundred dollars the southwest quarter of section seven, 130.55 acres of township thirty-five (Locke). On October 11, 1858 they bought for three hundred dollars the north half of the southwest quarter of section thirty-four in Olive Township, containing 120 acres, and April 12, 1865 from John H. and Harriet Baker of Elkhart County for two hundred dollars the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section thirty-four in Olive Township.

George Holdeman was a soldier in the Civil War. He was drafted, and entered November 14, 1862 at Indianapolis. He was a private and a member of Company K. 57th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. At the battle of Stone River December 21, 1862 he was wounded in the shoulder; it is said he would have been killed had it not been for a pair of new boots which he had in a knapsack over his shoulder.

George Holdeman had been the first of the Holdemans to settle in Elkhart County, and to clear land; he first cleared ten acres on the west side of section thirty-four, at what came to be called Coonville. Later he built a log house almost in the center of the section; it stood northesast of where the barn now is on the farm occupied by Warren Holdeman. This log house faced the east with a porch along the east side of it. He had also started to build a barn, but sold the farm before this was completeted.

Anna (Eicher) Holdeman died March 2, 1863, aged 44 years, 4 months, 10 days. George Holdeman was married the second time December 17, 1868 to Charlotte Bixler, and shortly afterward sold his farm to Joseph Holdeman. He purchased the shares from the children of his second wife of a farm north of the Baugo Church, northwest of Wakarusa.

In addition to teaching and farming he practiced verterinary quite extensively, and became more a veterinarian than a farmer.

George and Ann (Eicher) Holdeman were members of the Mennonite Church. Before the Holdeman Meeting House was built, services were held regularly once every four weeks at their home one and one-half miles west and one-half mile south of Wakarusa. he sometime accommodated Mennonite ministers and other visitors to Elkhart County by providing transportation for them. For instance in 1868 Christian D. Berry of Burr Oak, Michigan visited Mennonites around Wakarusa; when he returned home George Holdeman and Danniel Brenneman accompaneid him as far as LaGrange, Indiana.

George married Anna Eicher on 18 Feb 1836 in Wayne County, Ohio U.S.A.. Anna (daughter of Daniel Echer and Mary M. Stuckschleger) was born on 22 Oct 1818 in Westermoreland County, Pennsylvania U.S.A.; died on 02 Mar 1863. [Group Sheet]
