Lindsey and Manervia Poteat were farmers and believed in hard wok for themselves and their family. Although Lindsey had little formal education, he was interested in seeing that his family and those of his neighbors were provided with a better education. The one-room Poteat School located off the Old County Home Road was constructed in 1913 from lumber sawn from trees on his land and was built on land provided by him and Manervia. Second Photograph: John Horton and Eliza Ann Powell Horton.

Several death certificates of the children of John Horton and Eliza Ann Powell give their mother's name as Martha or Mary. A decendant of William Joshua Horton (born 1844 in Caswell County stated that the story was that Eliza said her name was not Eliza Ann and that she hated to be called Eliza Ann. That would explain the Mary Powell/Martha Powell name discrepancy.
