      Margaret Parthenia Devin, who married Govenor Prier Holmes, was a cousin to
      Nathaniel Madison "Matt" Devin, who married Govenor Prier Holmes' sister, Eliza Jane Holmes.

      Being the eldest child, she had limited opportunity to attend school. After
      marriage, she spent much of her spare time studying & reading & became very
      well self-educated. She was well versed in the Bible & was an excellent
      singer.

      She was a member of Spring Creek Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Dunnegan
      Springs, later transferring her membership to Cumberland Presbyterian in
      Greenfield. The Holmes family moved from Polk County to Taney County to Dade
      County near Greenfield, MO & then in 1907 moved to Wallowa County, Oregon U.S.A. near Flora
      where they lived for 11 years & finally moved to Lostine where Mr. Holmes
      purchased some land. The last few months of her life was spent in caring for
      her aged mother who had lived with her only a short time.

      Robert and his second wife, Nancy FORGEY, came to Harrison, Boone County, Arkansas from Tennessee (possibly Maury County, TN). They had two sons at this time, Moses and Samuel. Robert homesteaded on 80 acres and purchased a lot of land. Robert donated the land for the Holmes Cemetery in which he is buried. His second wife and several descendents are also buried there. The cemetery is five miles south of Bellefonte, Arkansas.

      During the War of 1812, Clayton Devin served as a Private in Captain Calland's company of Col. Linsley's regiment, Virginia militia from 31 Mar 1813 to 14 Oct 1813 when the company was dissolved.

      At the close of the war he was granted 80 acres near Springfield, Missouri as payment for his services in this war. 2 BLW of 80A each in Polk County, Missouri. This parchment signed by Millard Fillmore, President, is now in the hands of Loyd Devin; who also has the family Bible. The old farmstead lies near Bolivar, Missouri and in 1937 much of the original house was still standing although the land had passed from the Devin family.

      His wife, Margaret, in making application for her Widow's War Pension,
      describes her husband: "about 5'8" tall, fair complexion, red hair, blue eyes."
      He lived in Pittsylvania County, Virgina U.S.A., Lincoln County, Tennessee U.S.A., Pike County, Missouri U.S.A. (for almost 1 year), and Polk County, Missouri U.S.A.

      James West lived next door to Clayton Devin in 1830.
