_______________
Family members relate that Richard wanted to join the armed forces to fight in World War II as had his brother James Ernest Foster. However, their father would not allow Richard to enlist because he was needed on the dairy farm so the school children would have milk to drink. This purportedly angered the young Richard.

In addition to his tobacco operations, Ernest O. Foster owned a dairy farm in Caswell County, North Carolina, that processed milk and delivered it locally. Here is a remembrance by a Yanceyville customer:
"Boy do I remember getting Foster's Dairy Milk! In glass bottles on the front porch, cream on top, and in really cold weather, pushing the cap up because the milk froze and expanded ! Unfortunately, I also remember that the cows would sometimes get into the wild onions (and the wild onions got into the cows) and the taste would be in the milk."

Bella Poteat Foster says she doesn't know why the Gillespie school was discontinued but it was where she went the first year. Miss Gertie Jones of Yanceyville remembers that when she was six around the turn of the century she went to Gillespie's and thinks there got to be more families living toward Yanceyville and that the New Hope School took over those to the east. Bella says her father gave the timber for the building described in Caswell's Architectural Inventory as "Small, gable-front building with overhanging eaves, single front panelled door. Originally served as a one room school."

Lindsey and Manervia Poteat were farmers and believed in hard wok for themselves and their family. Although Lindsey had little formal education, he was interested in seeing that his family and those of his neighbors were provided with a better education. The one-room Poteat School located off the Old County Home Road was constructed in 1913 from lumber sawn from trees on his land and was built on land provided by him and Manervia.
