Mary seems to have been enumerated twice in 1900. Once in Wisconsin and once in Indiana. The information, except her middle initial is exactly the same. My speculation is that she was in Indiana for the birth of her granddaughter by Edna. Orpha was born in May 1900 and was enumerated as being 0/12 years old. The Wisconsin enumeration was probably her husband listing her as she was just temporarily out of town.

Dawes, who was born in Peasmarch, Sussex Co., Eng., 14 Nov. 1817, and came to this country with his parents in 1829. Mr. and Mrs. Dawes lived in Cape Vincent, N. Y., until spring of 1864, when they moved to Waterloo, Wis. In 1890 they were living in Pittsville, Wis. They had fourteen children:"

From a hand written letter in the possession of Marian DIBBLE Williams (1992): "Wm C. Dawes sailed from Rye Old England March 28th 1830 for the United States arrived in New York on the eleventh day of April 1830 at the age of 13 years." On side of this paper he has written: "I cannot see God, But God can see me."

From "History of Wood County" page 668 and 669: "William was a native of England and came to the United States when 12 years old, his family settling at Cape Vincent, New York where William C. was raised. The mother was of Holland Dutch descent. Mr. and Mrs. William C. Dawes came to Wisconsin in 1863 and settled at Waterloo, where the father followed the trade of miller until 1876. In which year they came to Wood County, driving overland with a team of oxen. Here they purchased 80 acres of heavily timbered land in Section 24, of Wood Township. The country was a most primitive one at that time. The Dawes family on first coming lived in an old logging shanty while the father and sons made a clearing and hewed logs for a more commodious, if not less primitive residence. This structure, when completed, was roofed with home-made shingles after it was converted into a frame house. The family of pioneers set to work to clear the land, the age-old battle of the pioneer; there were hardships on every hand, and the task before them was a formidable one. Gradually, however, they accomplished it and from their efforts there emerged a fine agricultural property. This place was the home of the father and mother for the remainder of their lives."

Josephine Christy James tells us that Darwin White was in the the Union side of the Civil War and a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and is said to be buried in Jefferson Military Cemetery Saint Louis Misouri.[maryabwhiteanc.ged]

Darwin and Olivia moved to WI around 1852 after selling their land in Mount Holly, VT. They went to Waushara Co. where they were living at the time of the Civil War.
Darwin was in the 18th WI Volunteers in the Civil War, enlisting at 43 years of age on 18 Dec 1861 at Berlin, WI for a three year term. He gave his residence as Poysippi, Waushara County, WI. He was mustered into the military service of the United States on 22 Jan 1862 by Capt Trowbridge at Milwaukee, WI according to his Certificate of Service, issued by the State Historical Society of WI. The 18th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trowbridge, Milwaulkee, and mustered into the US Service on 15 Mar 1862. The regiment left WI for St. Louis on 30 Mar, then went to Pittsburg landing, TN on 31 Mar. On 5 Apr. the regiment was attached to the 2nd Brigade, 6th Division, Army of the Tennessee to Jul 1862 The next day he was wounded and captured in the Battle of Shiloh and taken to an Alabama prison camp. He was later released, but had contracted Typhoid. He was taken to St Louis, MO where he died in the military hospital there.
He was buried in the military cemetary there, according to his CW Pension papers.
According to his Certificate of Service issued by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin: "Private White was reported missing in action on April 6, 1862 at the battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. A special report, dated October 29, 1862 states he was a prisoner of war. In December 1862 he was reported dead by a Surgeon of the St. Louis , Missouri General Hospital. An inventory of effects and final statement report indicates Private White died on the 16th day of July, 1862, at St Louis, Missouri, due to typhoid fever. The Roll of Honor, Volume 20, page 390, shows he is buried in the cemetary at Jefferson Barracks, Missoure. He is buried in Section 11, Grave 10, having been removed from the Wesleyan Cemetary at St. Louis." Jefferson Barracks National Cemetary is located at 2900 Sheridan Road, St. Louis Missoure 63125. This is supposed to be a beautiful cemetary according to a national genealogist who wrote about this cemetary in a computer on-line article.

This White family can be traced to the "Mayflower."

Olivia was already a 7th generation descendant of Nicholas Patch who came from South Pertherton, England to Beverley, MA about 1630. Her mother was Philomela Lawrence and her 4th great-grandfather was John Lawrence, one of the original settlers of Groton, MA. The Lawrence line has been traced back to Sir Robert Lawrence of Ashton, Lancastershire, England, who was companion-in-arms to Richard the Lion Hearted during one of the Crusades. He was made a knight in 1191 for his bravery in scaling the walls of Acre. Many of Olivia's ancestors were among the earliest settlers of Groton, Chelmsford, Watertown, Rowley, Littleton, Andover and Haverhill, MA. Her father's mother, Mary Hazen, was the great, great, great grandaughter of John Nutting, who was killed in the Indian raid of 1667 at Groton, MA. He was one of the original settlers of Groton. The Hazens were early settlers of Rowley. The Lawrences were among the earliest settlers of Watertown before Groton. The Nuttings were early settlers of Chelmsford and then Groton. Some of their wives came from families of the earliest settlers of surrounding towns.
Olivia married Nathan Cate after Darwin's death, and received a Civil War Pension to support Darwin's 5 children until each was 18 years old. They continued to live in Auroraville, WI and both are buried in Pine Grove Cem, 1 mi NW of Auroraville.
Her birth record has not been found,.Her three brothers were all born at Groton, MA in 1808, 1810 and 1816; and her two sisters were born in Tyngsborough, MA in 1812 and 1814 according to the Groton Vital Records. The Edmund Patch family was in Wallingford, Rutland County, VT in 1820 and in Mount Holly by 1830.

They were married in Wallingford, which is just west of Belmont (formerly Mechanicville) which is in the west side of Mount Holly township. There is a church still in Wallingford, as of late Oct 1996, which could have been where they were married. The Whites were living in the Belmont area, but it has not been determined where the Patches were living. There were some Patch families in the Ludlow area, just east of Mount Holly, township. Some of this White family lived in that area also, along with some unrelated White families.
