      Thomas Jefferson Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth
      of Virginia, to all to whom these presents hath come Greeting Know
      Ye that in consideration of the Ancient Composition of thirty five
      Shillings Sterling paid by William Devan into the Treasury of the
      Commonwealth there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto
      the said William Devan a certain tract or parcel of land containing
      three hundred and twent seven Acres by Survey bearing date the
      Ninteenth day of April One thousand seven hundred and Seventy lying
      and being in the County of Pittsylvania, on Banister river and bound=
      =ed as followeth to wit Beginning at a white Oak, corner in William
      Cooks line, and thence the same North twenty eight degrees west fifty

      two poles to a red oak and thence new lines South Seventy six degrees west sixty
      poles to a red on the Court house road: South twenty one degrees west, two =
      hundred and thirty two poles crossing two branches to a hickory: South
      thirty six degrees east, fifty four poles to a white Oak: south twenty seven
      degrees west, thirty five poles to a hickory: South Seventy degrees East
      One hundred and thirty two poles crossing a branch and the River to a white Oak:
      North twenty one degrees east, three hundred and thirty two poles crossing
      the river eight times to a white Oak: and North Seventy nine and half
      degrees west, eighty eight poles crossing the aforesaid Creek to the
      Beginning with its Appurtenances; to have and to hold the said tract
      or parcel of Land, with its Appurtenances; to the said William Devan
      and his Heirs forever. In witness whereof, the said Thomas Jefferson
      Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, hath here unto Set his
      hand and Caused the Seal of the Said Commonwealth to be affixed at
      Richmond on the first day of September in the year of our Lord one
      thousand seven hundred and Eighty and of the Commonwealth the fifth.

      • Land grant to William Devan recorded 01.September.1780 for 327 acres in Pittsylvania County on the Banister River adjoining Cook's land. Despite the name spelling variation, this grant is for William Devin, Sr., because this plot is divided by deeds as part of his estate. The survey for this grant is entered in Pittsylvania County, Virginia Survey Book 1 page 211.

      • Grant entered for William Devan on 01.September.1780 from a survey dated 17.April.1770. Grant consists of 327 acres in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on the Banister River adjoining Cook's land. Granted for 35 Shillings Sterling.

        Beginning at a White oak corner in William Cook's line:

        1. N28W 52 poles along William Cook's line to a red oak.
        2. S76W 60 poles on a new line to a red oak on the Court House road.
        3. S21W 232 poles crossing two branches to a hickery.
        4. S36E 54 poles to a white oak.
        5. S27W 35 poles to a hickery.
        6. S70E 132 poles crossing a branch and the river to a white oak.
        7. N21E 332 poles crossing the river eight times to a white oak.
