      Thomas Jefferson Esquire Governor of the Commonwealth
      of Virginia, to all to whom these presents shall come Greeting: Know ye
      that in consideration of the Ancient Composition of forty Shillings Ster=
      =ling paid by William Devan into the Treasury of this Commonwealth there
      is granted by the said Commonwealth unto the said William Devan a cer=
      =tain tract or parcel of Land containing four hundred and four Acres by
      Survey bearing date the [blank] day of [blank] one thousand Seven hun=
      =dred and [blank] lying and being in the County of Pittsylvania on

      both side of the west Sleaves Creek and bounded as followth to wit:
      Beginning at Chamberlaine's corner white Oak; thence new lines
      West, two hundred and thirty two poles to a white Oad on the west sleave
      in White's line; thence along the same north thirty degrees west,

      One hundred poles to a red Oak: thence new lines North forty nine degrees
      east, one hundred and eighty six poles to a white oak: North thirteen degrees
      east, One hundred and Sixty poles crossing little Creek to a red Oak: North
      Seventy degrees east, fifty poles to pointers: South two degrees east eighty
      poles to a white Oak in Leak's line: thence along the same east, thirty poles
      to a white Oak in the Order line: thence along the same south three hun=
      =dred poles crossing West Sleave to the Beginning with its Appurtan=
      =ances; to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of Land with its
      Appurtenances, to the said William Devan and his heirs forever In
      Witness whereof, the said Thomas Jefferson Governor of the Common=
      =wealth of Virginia hath hereunto set his hand, and caused the Seal
      of the Said Commonwealth to be affixed at Richmond on the first day
      of September in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and

      • Grant entered in Grant Book D page 140-141 for William Devan on 01.September.1780 from a survey dated ?.?.17??. Grant consists of 404 acres in Pittsylvania County, Virginia on both sides of the West Sleaves Creek. Granted for 40 Shillings Sterling.

        Beginning at Chamberlaine corner white oak:

        1. W 232 poles on a new line to a white oak on the West Sleaves in White's line.
        2. N30W 100 poles along White's line to a red oak.
        3. N49E 186 poles to a white oak.
        4. N13E 160 poles crossing little creek to a red oak.
        5. N70E 50 poles to pointers.
        6. S2E 80 poles to a white Oak in Leah's line.
        7. E 30 poles along Leah's line to a white oak in the Order line.
        8. S 300 poles along the Order line crossing West Sleave to the Beginning.

      • Land grant to William Devan recorded 01.September.1780 for 404 acres in Pittsylvania County on both sides of Wet Sleves Creek adjoining Chamberlain, White, and Leak.
        This grant for William Devin, Sr. is where he lived. The tract bequeived to his daughter, Sarah, was in this tract. Parcels were sold to Jerimiah Spurling (Deed 11:238) and to William Devin, Jr. (Deed 09:498).
