William Devin, Sr. has been honored by having a local unit of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution named after him.
The William Devin Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.) was organized in Shoreline, Washington (just north of Seattle) on January 13, 2007. SageMarie Berg was elected President, and the treasurer is Ciara Berg. Other officers include Gwen Keller (V.P.), Marina Keller (Secretary), and Steven Johnson(Chaplain). John R. Berg is the Senior President. The Society is organized without the sponsorship of any specific DAR, SAR or SR Chapter.
William Devin, Sr. of Pittsylvania County, Virginia is accepted as a qualifying patriot, so those lineally descended (by blood line) are eligible for membership in a C.A.R society. While it is not the intent to limit membership in the William Devin Society C.A.R. to Devin descendants, all seven of the founding members happen to be descended from William Devin. New members are welcome from any location who can trace their lineage to any American Revolutionary War patriot. Because the membership is scattered, members can participate electronically in the meetings.
The first activity of the William Devin Society was by Sage Berg who laid a wreath on President's Day at the statue of George Washington at the University of Washington on behalf of the society. Activities that can be carried out by long distance will be planned specifically for the nature of this group and the diversity of it's members ages and locations. Activities will be planned to teach members about service in and the history of the Revolutionary War as well as William Devin's family.
The Children of the American Revolution was founded in 1895, and, while a separate organization, is affiliated with the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Sons of the American Revolution (SAR). It is a patriotic and educational non-profit organization. Membership in the C.A.R. is open to youth under the age of 22 who are descended from an individual who rendered aid to the cause of American Independence. There are local and state C.A.R. units throughout the United States with which members can participate. See www.nscar.org for more information on the organization.
