Captain George Carter s/o James Carter and 2nd wife, Mary Brent; m. Mary Jackson about 1755 in Stafford Co., Virginia; Children are: Patriot William Carter Sr., Charles Brent Carter, Robert Carter, Francis Jackson Carter and Sarah Tyler Carter Grayson.
The pivot point in all this is the Captain George Carter of the Pittsylvania Militia. From the DAR lookup service:
"CARTER, George Birth: VA 1740-46 Service: VA Rank: Ens, Civil Service, Patriotic Service
Death: TN post (after) 12-4-1809 [date of will] Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No
Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No Spouse: (1) Mary Craig " [old erroneous data *]
Thanks to Joe Carter: DAR Patriot Index on Carter Genforum: [consistent with the DAR above]
[9 Jul 1810 is either actual death, or date of probate ? can not be "died after"]
George : b 1740-46 VA d a 7-9-1810 TN m Mary Craig Capt CS VA * [false]
John: b 3-9-1728 VA d 5-21-1792 VA m (1) Mary --- (2) Jane Mitchell PS VA
And yes, our George is both Capt. of Civil Service and Ensign of Patriot Service; let's not forget that we now know both his father and grandfather-in-law were Commssioners of the Peace in Stafford in 1731:
DAR Civil Service: for public service during the Revolution, including Justices of the Peace and Militia.
DAR Patriot Service: for Signers of the Oaths of Allegiance as required by Congress in 1777 (last option)

(Chas. Kenyon, Justice, gave oaths to Ens. George, John and Wm. Carter)

DAR Ancestry No. A019924. Member Application No. 154853 back in 1920 by way of Charles. The DAR file ends in Pittsylvania! Without a follow-through reference back to Stafford to pull all this together, it remains a wonder how the DAR could have accepted George of Wythe as the Patriot in Pittsylvania. For proof beyond the DNA test, we need to rely on the names of his youngest son, Francis Jackson Carter, of Mitchell and Thompson Carter, and of the very unusual Jasper, Althea, Braxton et. al. derived from the Bates of Halifax, known to be Quakers. We then need to take note of the Litany of Public Service of the combined Carter-Bates-Evans family over several generations.
