- Richard CARTER was born about 1740 in Virginia.(2) No proof exists that this Richard is actually the son of Theodorick, Jr. There was another Richard in Halifax who could have been the brother, Richard, named as executor in John CARTER's will. He resided in 1767 in Halifax County, Virginia.(90) He died in 1786 in Halifax County, Virginia.(4) The inventory of his personal estate was taken on 17 Jul 1787 by L. RAGLAND, John MOORE and Caleb DODSON. Frances CARTER signed approval.
The estate contained: one sorrel horse, 3 mares, 1 colt, two fear naughts (defined in an old dictionary as heavy woolen coats), blacksmith's tools, one crosscut saw and two scythes, coopers tools, a lot of old brass, an ox cart, one yoke of steers, 25 head of cattle, 10 sheep, 21 hogs, one pair stillards, 5 bee gums (hives), Negro fellow, Isaac; Negro wench, Peg, Negro girl (unnamed); 2 pots, 1 pan, 1 skillet; loom and bells, man's saddle, four feather beds and furniture, 2 chests, 12 chairs, 3 spinning wheels, 1 table, pewter, 21 spools, 4 sleighs, (?) frisans. Bk. 2. pg. 266.
In his first deed in Halifax County, VA: The "fifteenth day of May in the seventh year of the reign of King George III and in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred sixty seven", Richard CARTER, gunsmith, bought 400 acres of land in Halifax County from Joseph TERRY for "50 lbs. current money to me in hand, paid". The deed mentions houses, outhouse, "edifice" building, and watercourses. Witnesses were: Benjamin SLAYDEN, Jos. COLLINS, and Moses HENDRICK. TERRY's wife, Judith, waived her dower rights in the land.
On 21 Jul 1773, Richard and Frances Carter sold 100 acres to George Carter. Witnesses: Thomas Walters, I.N. Walters, Robert Walters. Bk 3, p.336.
In 1787, Richard CARTER, gunsmith is shown as the owner of 299 acres.
In 1788 through 1799, this land is shown as the property of Frances CARTER, widow. Parents: Theodorick CARTER Jr and Ann WADDELL.
He was married to Frances Walters, d/o William, in Virginia. Some of his children were: Presley CARTER, Levin CARTER , Charles E. CARTER, Mary CARTER , Spencer CARTER, Thompson CARTER.
