James T. Carter's Obit was in Danville Register/Bee Aug
27 ?) 1943 - Headline JAMES T CARTER DIES AT AGE 101.
It mentions that he was born April 3, 1842 but does not give parents names. According to the census etc. he was born
later than that. But after dealing with the census, no age surprises me !!!!! He gave his age as 40 when he married Eliza Hill in 1890 - He was survived by his 8 children -
he had 5 with Carolyn and 3 with Eliza. He was married to
Laura Petty when he died.
I've talked to a fellow in Halifax County and he referred me to
(I forget his name) at the Library of Virginia and neither of those fellows had any information on James T. (1) - he remains an elusive character. In the obit, there was no mention of James T's brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles. cousins Mama or Papa, No one seems to know any
thing about him, except his name on marriage records | Carter, Edward Palmer (I67980)

The act of the General Assembly passed on June 22, 1779, which established
the Virginia Land Office, also provided for the rewarding of lands promised as
bounty for specified Revolutionary War military service. The purpose of the
bounty land system was to encourage longer military service. In order to qualify
for bounty land, a soldier had to serve at least three (3) years continuously in
the State or Continental line. Militia service did not count. Servicemen
submitted various documents such as affidavits of commanding officers and
fellow soldiers and discharge papers in order to substantiate their service
record. When the claim was proved, the Governor’s Office issued a certificate to
the register of the Land Office authorizing him to issue a warrant. The first
warrant was issued in 1782 and the last in 1876 as heirs of warrantees
continued to seek lands for additional service. Land awarded as bounty was in
the present-day states of Ohio and Kentucky.
The papers accumulated as proof of service are now part of the records of the
Executive Dept. Office of the Governor (RG#3) and are called ’Bounty Warrants’
if approved and ’Rejected Claims’ if disapproved. These records are housed in
the Archives at the Library of Virginia. | Source (S67491)

The Devin Family, page 39 states that the unnamed husband of Susan Devin was the son of Philip Beck; who had married her sister, Elizabeth Devin. KLV thinks that the husband of Susan Devin is the son of Philip Beck by a prior marriage. JNT in an email dated 04.October.1998, says father of Susan Devin's husband is George Beck; a cousin of Philip Beck.
He was from Salem, IN. (Washington Co.)
Rowan County, North Carolina became Davidson County, North Carolina. Andrew Beck moved with his parents to Washington County, Indiana Territory in 1808. [Beck & Tittle Footprints; 19981001]
When Susan died, Andrew had the responsibility of a new born baby, a son, Alexander, eighteen months old, and four young daughters. He must have had help from other family members where they lived at Beck's Mill. Andrew M. Beck remarried two years after Susan died to Rebecca Barker. [JNT email 04.October.1998]. They moved to near Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas in 1854. | Beck, Andrew M. (I1184)

The entry at March - Saturday 20 - 1858 (MSS 1858) of the Date Book of John of The Nest, addressed to his nephew, Thomas Carter of Lexington, Bourbon County, Kentucky,
son of Joseph, brother to Daniel Carter Jr.:
"John Carter was another of Old Tom's sons. I have never known but one of this branch of the Carter family, a Mr. Norborn Sutton a lawyer living in Caroline. A few years ago
spent several days in Lancaster taking depositions in a suit. I saw him at the C. H. and on hearing my name he said his Grandfather was a Carter. He spent Sunday with me and I found him a pleasant well informed man. He knew a lot about his and told me his grandfather's father was a John Carter who settled in Caroline from Lancaster before the county was formed.
"He did not know the name of John's father but I believe it was from Old ancestor Tom [proven to be Thomas Carter Sr.] who had a son John. He said his John was married 3
times - first to a Miss Ball who was a sister of a cousin to Gen. Washington's mother. She died and left him no children". (Joseph Ball Carter died in infancy)
"He next married a Miss Payne and had several daughters and a son Henry and none of these married he thinks.
"After she died he married a Miss Tod from King and Queen and settled in that County. She was an heiress and brought him a nice lot in land and slaves. They had sons John (Mr. Sutton's grandfather), William who now has descendents in Caroline, Robert who lives in King & Queen and James who left no children and a daughter Margaret who never married.
"John the oldest son was married twice, first to Miss Betty Armstead of Richmond County & last to a Miss Hannah Chow [sic] of Spotsylvania. The first wife had sons William
married Curtis, John married Sijohn [sic] and daughters Martha mar. Goodlo, Ann mar. Heslop?, Peggy mar. Marshall, Fanny married Curtis, Betty married Thomas and Sally
married Sutton and was the mother of Mr. T. S. The last wife had son Robert never married and daughters Mary married Stevens, Margaret Chow married Taliaferro, Judy
married Sutton, Lucy married Taliaferro, and Lilly never married.
"He was a Captn. in the War of Independence and was a man of great means and fine style of living. His children all had big families all scattered everywhere. John Carter,
first of Caroline, lived to be very old." | Carter, John of Caroline (I67892)

The Faulkners were a family of high position in the community of Andover. They were living on a farm in the north part of Andover. On 11 Aug 1692 she was arrested for afflicting Sarah Phelps of the Andover afflicted circle. She was tried and convicted as a witch on 17 Sep. of the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. She was not executed as she was two months pregnant with her 7th child whom she named Ammi Ruhammah meaning "mercy for my people," when he was born in March 1693. Abigail's two daughters, Dorothy age 12 and Abigail Jr. age 9, were also accused of witchcraft, but were bailed out on 6 Oct 1692, when John Osgood and Nathaniel Dane posted a bond of L500. They were not tried in Jan., and remained free because of another L100 bond plsted on 13 Jan, by their father, and their uncle Joseph Marble. The girls were cleared by proclimation in May. In 1703, Abigail petitioned for a pardon, and on 20 Jul 1703, the House of Representatives replied favorably to her petition and those of others from Andover. | Dane, Abigail (I5181)

The first record of WIlliam is in Groton in 1665 where he was an original proprietor. At that time he had a 14 acre right. The Greens probably settled in Groton soon after their marriage. Their home lot of 17 acres was located on both sides of the street or "great country road" and included on the west side several house-lots extending as far north as the road leading across Broad Meadow. He was elected fence-viewer in 1674 and Constable in 1675. On 13 Mar 1676 Indians assaulted Groton and burned all the houses but four that were garrisoned. The town was soon abondoned. It was resettled 2 years later in 1678. William was elected a Surveyor in 1680.
