Nicholas Haldeman came in 1727 to Pennsylvania from the canton Bern, Switzerland, by way of Holland, accompanied by his two brothers, Hans and Michael, as well as by his wife and children. Hans Haldeman and Michael Haldeman each purchased 150 acres of land in Chester County, the deed for the purchase of the latter being recorded February 8, 1734, and for the former May 7, 1737 (Pennsylvania Arhives, Third Series, Vol. 24) They undoubtedly boutht other tracts later. The land obtained by Michael was in Coventry Township.
Nicholas Haldeman purchased a tract of land in Salford Township, in the vicinity of Skippack, Montgomery County, which was then and until September 10, 1784, a part of Philadelphia County. The records of the original homestead are entirely complete, dating from the William Penn grant in 1695, through the several successive ownerships before being conveyed to Nicholas Haldeman. The land was deeded to him August 13, 1728. He held the property fourteen years, and in 1742 sold it to his son, Nichoals, Jr., who in 1765 transferred the title to Isaac Markley for the sum of 800 pounds sterling. All records are clear through four additional transfers, the last being made in 1882 from Abraham Landis to Franklin S. Tyson, Lower Salford Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
Nicholas Haldeman was one of the trustees in the founding of the Lower Salford Mennonite Church in 1738. His name heads the list of those to whom the meetinghouse, and tract of land on which it stood, was transferred by the ministers and deacons for the congregation. (See "Perkiomen Region", April 1932, Page 69). He was also one of the seventy-seven signers to a petition to Governor patrick Gordon, dated May 10, 1728, in which the inhabitants of the frontier asked for protection from the Indians. The signers called themselves "the back inhabitors about Falkner's Swamp and New Goshenhoppen (See"Perkiomen Region", April 1932, Page 75). The name of Nicholas Haldeman is included in a list of German, Dutch, and French inhabitants of Philadlephia County who owned land and paid quit rents prior to 1734. One hundred acres are ascribed to him (I. D. Rupp, "Thirty Thousand Immigrants", Page 477).
At a session of the supreme Court of Pennsylvania, held April 12th and 13th, 1743 in Philadelphia, a number of persons were naturalized who had conscientious scruples against taking the oath. Among them were Nicholas Haldeman of Chester County, and Nicholas Haldeman, Jr., and Christian Haldeman, both of Philadelphia County. The latter two were sons of Nicholas, and had been born in Switzerland.
After Nicholas Haldeman had sold his farm in Salford Township, Montgomery County, then Philadelphia County, he removed to Chester County, where he purchased on April 12, 1743, a tract of land containing 200 acres ("Pennsylvania Archives", Third Series, Vol. 24).

[From "Holdeman Descendants" by Edwin L. Weaver, 1937, Vol I., Page 235-237]
George Holdeman was married February 18, 1836 in Wayne County, Ohio to Anna Eicher, born October 22, 1818 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, daughter of Daniel and Mary M. (Stuckschleger) Eicher. She had come with her parents to Wayne County, Ohio, and was reared on a farm which was the northeast quarter of section nineteen in Congress Township, in which township they lived during the first several years after their marriage.
George Holdeman became a school teacher and taught one-third of the winter term of 1839 and 1840 at the old log school house of district No. Six in Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio. The following facts concerning the teaching career of George Holdeman in Ohio were taken from Chester Township records: " George Holdeman taught the winter term of school 1844 and 1845 in District No. Two which was the next district due north of District No. Six, and known to-day as Science Point District by the same number, and that on March 12, 1845 was paid $45.50 for his services, and the winter of 1846 and 1847 George Holdeman taught the school of District No. Eleven, today kown as Red Swamp, and on March 22, 1847 drew $52.00 for his wages. The following winter, 1847 and 1848, he again taught in District No. Two and on march 16, 1848 he was paid $52.00. (Harvey S. Rutt, "History of Chester Township, Wayne County, Ohio, P 26.)
On November 20, 1839, George Holdeman and wife bought from Simon Vanosdal a forty acre tract of land, which was the south one-half of the south half of the southeast quarter of section five in Chester Township. This land was sold on September 2, 1848, twenty acres to Isaac Young and twenty to Susannah Cook.
In the year 1848 George Holdeman and family came to Elkhart County, Indiana, and lived during the first year in Elkhart Township, in which township the Frederick Landis family had settled. They had seven children at this time. They then moved to Olive Township and purchased from the government September 2, 1849 the forty acres of the southwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section thirty-five of township thirty-six (Olive); this tract was sold for sixty dollars to Susannah Miller July 30, 1850. On May 13, 1850, George and Anna Holdeman bought from Henry Yoder of Mahoning County, Ohio, for five hundred dollars the southwest quarter of section seven, 130.55 acres of township thirty-five (Locke). On October 11, 1858 they bought for three hundred dollars the north half of the southwest quarter of section thirty-four in Olive Township, containing 120 acres, and April 12, 1865 from John H. and Harriet Baker of Elkhart County for two hundred dollars the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section thirty-four in Olive Township.
George Holdeman was a soldier in the Civil War. He was drafted, and entered November 14, 1862 at Indianapolis. He was a private and a member of Company K. 57th Regiment of the Indiana Infantry. At the battle of Stone River December 21, 1862 he was wounded in the shoulder; it is said he would have been killed had it not been for a pair of new boots which he had in a knapsack over his shoulder.
George Holdeman had been the first of the Holdemans to settle in Elkhart County, and to clear land; he first cleared ten acres on the west side of section thirty-four, at what came to be called Coonville. Later he built a log house almost in the center of the section; it stood northesast of where the barn now is on the farm occupied by Warren Holdeman. This log house faced the east with a porch along the east side of it. He had also started to build a barn, but sold the farm before this was completeted.
Anna (Eicher) Holdeman died March 2, 1863, aged 44 years, 4 months, 10 days. George Holdeman was married the second time December 17, 1868 to Charlotte Bixler, and shortly afterward sold his farm to Joseph Holdeman. He purchased the shares from the children of his second wife of a farm north of the Baugo Church, northwest of Wakarusa.
In addition to teaching and farming he practiced verterinary quite extensively, and became more a veterinarian than a farmer.
George and Ann (Eicher) Holdeman were members of the Mennonite Church. Before the Holdeman Meeting House was built, services were held regularly once every four weeks at their home one and one-half miles west and one-half mile south of Wakarusa. he sometime accommodated Mennonite ministers and other visitors to Elkhart County by providing transportation for them. For instance in 1868 Christian D. Berry of Burr Oak, Michigan visited Mennonites around Wakarusa; when he returned home George Holdeman and Danniel Brenneman accompaneid him as far as LaGrange, Indiana. | Holdeman, George (I5795)

These are simply cordial letters. F. B. CLEMENT wrote things like "thank
you for the pictures," "How are the rest of the family? Give my love to
them," and "I was so sorry to hear of Albert's death."
The only items specific to the topic of the children of Ellen RIGNEY and
Benjamin Turner CLEMENT in the letters written by F.B. CLEMENT that I have
photocopies of are -
"It would interest me if you care to relate the whole story of his life
with your grandmother as well as with Sallie Gravelly." "It has always
seemed to me that he did the Rigney children an injustice and a wrong in
abandoning them without support." 19 Nov 1948
"It was news to me that he ever returned there after he first left Va for
Texas and also that he had the large number of children by your
grandmother" 15 Jan 1949
"The Kodak picture enclosed of Rob, Albert and Ben reveal some similarity
of features to my father." 9 March 1950
The only other family members mentioned in the letters to Estelle POWELL
from F. B. CLEMENT are Aunt Tavia, Uncle Fletcher, and an Aunt Betsy
Goggin
The photocopies of these letters were sent to me by James A. Davidson, a
grandson of Albert Sidney RIGNEY.
Respectfully submitted,
Marna

These letters are addressed to:
Mrs. S. C. Powell
Chatham, VA
The letters begin: Dear Estelle
These letters contain details that indicate that indeed Benjamin Turner
CLEMENT did father children by Ellen RIGNEY.
This Benjamin Turner CLEMENT was the son of George Washington CLEMENT (1786
VA - 1867 VA) and Sarah 'Sally' TURNER (1804 VA - 1889 VA).
The F. B. CLEMENT is Fletcher Blaine CLEMENT (b. 1892 AR), son of Benjamin
Turner CLEMENT and Alice B. Williams (d. 1910 AR).
Estelle POWELL was born Estelle RIGNEY (b. 1906 VA), the daughter of Albert
Sidney RIGNEY (1867 VA - 1949 VA) who was the son of Ellen RIGNEY.
If you have additional information on the families of any of these people,
please do share it with the members of this group.
Thank you.
